I'm not overly enthusiastic with regard to the painfully politically correct society which we inhabit but I feel compelled to say that some men, too, can be devious. I know a lot of men who have tricked women into staying with them or perhaps beat the women down (verbally) to a point that the women think nobody else wants to look at them. If you can completely degrade a person to the point that they have no sense of self-worth then you own them: I've seen the guys walk all over the girls: stay out drinking until all hours of the morning with buddies (leave girls at home), golf all day and evening (leave girls at home), even take big trips (hunting in Alaska, going to Vegas, Notre Dame games, etc....leave girl at home).
Just saying that in this case it might have been a better choice to say "in love people can be devious". No offense--I'm not accusing you of chauvnism or anything of that magnitude....just suggesting.
