Jalen Hurts was #7 in QBR last season in college football. This year he's been in and out of the lineup so that's been difficult on his statistics. Kelly Bryant however is 105th in QBR this season and he's started all 4 games. He's been worse than Brandon Wimbush has this year and is competing against a guy with the 7th best QBR in the FBS (87.2) in Trevor Lawrence. I think, like Brandon Wimbush, Kelly Bryant should go to a team that he will start for almost assuredly. Kelly will graduate in December and will have the benefit of joining a team for spring ball and be able to learn the offense and prepare for his last go around as a college QB.

If Kelly wants to play then I agree he should have left. Don't really have as big an issue with that as I do with the way he left. He was given every opportunity to win the job and didn't. But to say he wasn't given that chance is unfair to his coach and his team. I hope he lands somewhere and does great next season. I also hope he learns that things aren't handed to you.

This guy is a baby and is in denial if he thinks he will do much better somewhere else. Every QB we have played this year would outplay him. Put him on an average team and he will crap out. He doesn't have nearly enough to keep Clemson in a game with Bama, Georgia or OSU. Neither does the kid but at least he can pass and read defenses. It's a business. Make sure to get your degree and network along the way because you won't be collecting an NFL paycheck.

Are we going to give BW a 5th year if he wants it? HE could do worse than get a graduate degree from ND and leave everyone with a good taste in their mouth in that he handled himself with class. Seems like along time ago that Kizer was jumping all over BX at the UM game.

Sorry

Are you implying he only has class if he sticks around?

I'd love to see him go somewhere else if that's what he wants, and I hope he does incredibly well wherever it is that he ends up be it in South Bend or somewhere else.

Who is a baby? Certainly not BW. He's been a model student athlete at ND and he's certainly earned the right to reconsider his options if he won't be the starter moving forward. Naturally I wish he was better playing QB for us but I love BW and everything he's been off the field.

He'll be a winner in life, even if his football career ends on Saturdays. And I'm not writing him off, I still hope the best for him.

I'd give BW a 5th in a heartbeat, but short of Book totally collapsing or getting a serious injury, BW will be gone. And hell, just wait for the Book/PJ QB controversy....

And, I have zero problem with him going. He's been a great student athlete and has given plenty to ND. He's also a kid who wants/loves to play, and will have a ND degree. I just hope he graduates this semester and can get somewhere as early as possible. And I hope he goes somewhere with a system he can be successful in, and a depth chart in need.

I believe BeatSC is referring to Kelly Bryant in that entire first paragraph...

Worst case scenario phil beats book our next year and book transfers basically leaving us without any backup

Agree that's worst-case scenario, but it seems unlikely. Book will be a true senior next year, right? He'd have to sit a season if he transferred. Might as well play here and grad transfer in 2020.

I do worry about our QB depth next year if/when BW transfers though. I wonder if they'd move Davis back, at least have him work at both QB and his current RB/WR slot so he'd be available if needed in a pinch.

With the new transfer rules guys don't have to sit

Not true. Grad transfers are the only ones that don't have to sit.

If he left before completing 4 games, and was able to utilize a red shirt year, he can play the following year. If I understand the rule correctly.

Already took a RS during his freshman season, so it wouldn't apply.

Below is the info I was reading.

"athletes competing in Division I football can participate in up to four games in a season without using a season of competition. Division I athletes have five years to compete in up to four seasons of competition. The new exception allows football players to preserve a season of competition if, for example, injuries or other factors result in them competing in a small number of games."

So if he is a true senior next year and didn't get the starting job, wouldn't he be able to transfer and start the next year anywhere else?

The 4 game thing just means he saves a year of elegibility. It doesn't mean that he could play next year.

A transfer has to be at his new school for a full academic year before being allowed to play unless he is a grad transfer

Sorry, slow thought process here. That makes sense.

If Book was passed up by PJ next year, then just like BW this year, it would be silly to transfer until that year was complete. BW (this year) or Book (next year) would wait until you graduate, do a grad transfer, and play the following year using up the final year of eligibility.

Honest questions, how many schools have 3 P5 ready QB's that they feel can take them to the playoffs? Do we really want PJ waiting until his 3rd year before he's in the 2 deep?

My answers would be, very few if any to the first. So having Book with PJ behind is a great situation to be in. The seasoned vet with the young up and comer as the 2 deep. Seems about as good as it gets these days.

To the 2nd, I certainly don't want PJ waiting another year before entering the two deep. I want him getting 30-40% of snaps this Spring and Fall camp. Time for him to grow. A former HS phenom now college sophomore as our backup, sign me up.

This is spot on. If Book continues to play like he did against Wake, i want him and PJ making up the two deep next year and I will wish all the fortune on Wimbush. It'd be even better if Wimbush would be willing to crosstrain at another position and stay at ND as a grad student. That would give us even more of a safety net and he could prove to a be a valuable RB/WR.

Smartest thing he could do. Sits out a year, doesn't risk injury, has another Rondale year in '20, then it's payday.

Will also give Brohm a year to rebuild the mess around Rondale... Not sure how he'd look next year (obviously good, but dumpster fire good). Year two should be a nice "re-coming out" party.

If he goes, I want to see what happens to the Purdue class. It's sneaky great.

Brohm looked good against a top 25 team in Louisville with Lamar Jackson the first game of his career with Purdue, I'd say let's not sleep on them regardless if he goes to coach there.
