If Hawk Harrelson is a ND fan then they need to get him to do it.

He would be even more embarrassing than Hammond.

I used to like McDonough, but he did the ND/UM game a couple years ago and was openly rooting for the skunkbears so fuck him and the horse he road in on.

My guess is that any of our never-see-anything-I-like IErs could enjoy the game by turning off the game and screaming for 3 hours to the delight of all others present.

Embarrassing?

Grab some bench.

This conversation is O-VAH!

Hawk Harrelson is a joke, and most White Sox fans I've talked to are embarrassed by him. I don't think announcers need to play it completely straight, but there is a baseline of professionalism that most people want to see. It isn't really the homerism as much as it is the childishness. There's no way a reasonably intelligent person could be entertained by that shtick for more than three or four innings.

If you want to say "he's an idiot, but he's our idiot and I love him for it," fine. But at least acknowledge he is an idiot.

Before you start speaking for we Sox fans remember, before we had Hawk's shtick, we had Harry's. We openly celebrate the mullet, Elvis, beating umpires and every other PT Barnum / Vaudeville aspect of baseball promotion that Bill Veeck dreamed up. Hell, we took it upon ourselves to single handedly rid the world of disco between games of a double header. If it's goofy and wacky, we do it. Hawks part of that for me. I only see @ 20 games a year now that I'm out of market and it's good to hear his voice when they are winning and Stone keeps him in line much better than Darrin Jackson did. That being said, when I was in Chicago, I listened to the radio with John Rooney and Ed Farmer most of the time, though Hawk and Wimpy were quite entertaining.

Now I listen to the Dodgers and Vin Scully every night on the way home. It's like Mozart. Greatest announcer ever.

I' wish NBC would hire Marv Albert to do the games with Mayock and ALEX FLANNIGAN!

Anybody remember Charlie Jones? (I think that was his name) I remember he used to do some games for ND I was too young to really know if he was good but I thought the sound of his voice was cool. As far as current announcers I like Nessler/Blackledge and liked Musberger/Herbstriet even though Musberger is losing it with age. Although Keith Jackson was the best.

Charlie Jones was GREAT.

He was with the Irish for a few years in between Dick Enberg's runs. He was great too. Charlie Jones called games one year with Paul McGuirre who I really liked as a color guy. McGuirre was Marv Albert's long time sidekick with NBC.

Somehow Albert never got the call to do the Irish, that would have been sweet.

No way man. Imagine GB breaking an 80 yard run, "stretch, stretch, and he is ovah the goalline!"

Or after a big time field goal, "You can put it on the board, YESSSSSSSS!"

Or a big hit, "GAS".

...... this is going to be a long two weeks on IE.

I can relate to having Alex Flannigan back though. We should have a thread with just pictures of beautiful angel reporters [with no commentary] to pass the time. {About the only thing that stirs these ancient rumblings anymore.} {where IS the "songgirl" thread anyway?}

I like how he called Purdue's OC "Brian VanGordor" early in the game. Hammond is an idiot.

Yes.........I was laughing after that......I turned the sound off the TV and listened to DC on the Radio. Mayock is annoying....I don't think there's a definition for how bad Hammond is.

Charlie Jones was huge here on the West Coast. When I was a kid it seems like he always did the late AFC games. He was the unofficial Raiders announcer. I totally agree in regards to Paul McGuirre, he was informative and he would mix in a little bit of humor. I thought he was kind of the Bob Ueker of football.

I realize that I'm a Cubs fan, but Harrelson is perhaps the single most annoying announcer I've ever heard.

Damn it...why are we being punished? Haven't we had enough anguish with injuries this season, now this old pain?

Seriously, what is with the Hammond hate? Hicks has been horrible for us, and I mean 1000x worse than Hammond has ever been for us. The only detriment I've had for Hammond was his face.

It's funny. I imagine NBC keeping Tom locked up in some prop closet in the basement of 30 Rock and dusting him off and winding him up whenever needed.

I'm on record as questioning why we ever hated Hammond so much.

He was a strange looking dude. He mispronounced our guys' names a few times. He stood too close to whoever was in the booth. I get it.

He was also a nice voice of a casual observer. We're all seeing what we get without him.

If Hammond would just take off a layer of make-up and work on his physical boundary issues... we'd take him back in a second.

Mostly because Hammond sucks as a TV broadcaster covering football. I find Dan Hicks no better, and certainly feel that Flutie is on par with Hammond......I don't care for either one.

Maybe it's the Hammond Curse causing all the injuries. I mean ever since Hicks showed up it's been a MASH unit. If no one gets hurt on Saturday... It's a fact.

.

Funny... It made Harry Caray a national treasure.

And you can turn in your ND fan card, just for being a Sox fan......and that God awful fucking idiot Hawk Harrelson

Sox fans are the best ND fans... It's our Southide Irish birthrite. Hard to take a shot from someone whose team is most known for our ex-broadcater, the ivy on the walls that our ex-owner had planted... and losing, especially when he's from the plains of Eastern Indiana.
