Athletes get discounted or free higher education. If you want to profit off your likeness and image, then start a professional or minor league system and make your bucks.

I just don’t feel bad for any athlete that claims they are compensated unfairly in any way. Guess what. Get a real fucking job like the rest of us.

I generally agree, though in that case the universities should be held more accountable for ensuring they actually get a worthwhile education, not steered into crap majors or dropped entirely when their services are no longer needed.

Either way, the reality is that very very few college athletes (even starters at major football programs) have any real endorsement value. The handful who do, I guess I don’t really have any problem with them, say, getting a cut of sales of jerseys with their name on it or whatever. Or, for instance, someone like Katie Ledecky being able to do endorsements and continue to swim for Stanford. But there’s no real money in it for most:

What’ll probably happen here is that every defensive back at USC will be on a billboard for a car dealership or whatever, as a backdoor way of paying players. And then the SEC will catch on and it won’t just be a California thing.

The current system is total bullsh*t towards athletes in revenue sports. It is un-American that they cannot earn their free market value. It would be one thing if coaching staffs weren't making $10mil+ but there is a ton of money being allocated everywhere but into the pockets of the people who most deserve it.

The NCAA could have a legitimate amateurism model if they did away with corporate sponsorships, actually enforced uniform academic standards, etc. But they don't. So what you have is a cartel operating under a loophole to keep wages artificially suppressed for the labor.

Right now, the cheaters are the ones who persevere. The first step to fixing that is take all the money out of the shadows.

I like it. It doesn't take effect until 2023, which gives the NCAA three years to get their shit together in implementing some name/likeness benefits for athletes.

In turn, THIS WILL GIVE US THE NCAA FOOTBALL VIDEO GAME BACK.

DO IT TO IT. SHOUTOUTS TO CALI.

For some fraction it's about cost suppression. For the rest it's about some semblance of competitive balance. It will be interesting to see what the arms race does to the bottom half of the FBS.

If there was a fair system, it would mandate the following:
-4 years to play, period. No 5th years.
-Must be a full time student each semester to be eligible.
-Independent NCAA auditors at each school reviewing coursework for players. Standardized punishments for plagiarism, cheating, etc. across all schools.
-Independent NCAA auditors at each school administering the same, standardized random drug tests using the NFL model or equivalent.
-Players are allowed to receive compensation put into a trust fund. They receive this compensation upon graduation. If they do not graduate within 5 years of being enrolled, the compensation is forfeited to the school's general scholarship fund.
-Players can take a monthly disbursement of a low amount (say, $2000) from their trust fund while a full time student.
-Players with a 3.0 GPA or better can transfer without having to sit out a year. Players with below a 3.0 must sit a year. NO WAIVERS, NO GRAD TRANSFERS.

This is how you get student athletes to be *real students* while also letting them get a share of the pie they earned. The cost would be roughly $100k per school to afford the auditors.

These kids at major football factories are already playing "semi-pro" football. The good ones get money under the table and extra benefits. The ones that don't make the cut get pushed out. Education is an afterthought at best. Kids are essentially forced to take PEDs in order to keep up with their competition. Is there anything amateur about any of this? It is just one more nail in the coffin in major college sports.

Whole thing is a fluster F that only opens the door for above table bagmen. Why do professional athletes need to be college material? Get a D-League for NFL and NBA and leave college for students first. Will never happen b/c would ruin the "product" not having Zion or pick a 5 star football recruit to juice ratings.

Bottom line... money. If they wanted to fix it they could. It's just like this stupid playoff... 'true champion' has nothing to do with it, fixing CFB has nothing to do with it, but the money sure looked good to the powers that be didn't it?

For the most part I agree, but I see no reason why the exceptional ones shouldn't be allowed to make money off their image. It seems like a weird thing to be "anti". The ones that don't warrant additional money won't make it, the exceptional ones like Heisman candidates will get advertising deals. Who cares? I guess I could see being concerned if the NCAA was some beacon of an unsullied academic institution, but it's already dirty and money grubbing as is.

I think the anti crowd is worried about other things happening under that change in the rule.

All the sudden SMU is recruiting 5 stars because boosters are paying for "image rights."

The only reason I don't like something like this is that it might incentivize the SAs to take easy bs majors so they can maintain that average while also potentially hurting the ones that want to challenge themselves with engineering or pre-med majors.

I suppose Ole Miss recruits well because those 5 stars love to hear the song "Dixie." It's already happening, might as well make it legal so everyone can do it too. Some schools will be disadvantaged, but that's not a good reason to screw over a bunch of 18 year olds out of what they could recieve in any other market if the system in place wasn't built to freeze them out for no good reason except to protect an idealistic notion of amateurism that's already long gone and buried.

I agree that a minor league is the best solution, and I'd rather CFB be full of Tranquills and let the Jaylon's go make money off the bat, but it's clear that's not going to happen as there's no incentive for the Conferences or the NFL.

Yeah but Ole Miss got caught didn't they?

The players are signing a contract exchanging their service for a free education. I don't see a problem with that part of it. They're free to try and make it to the NFL via another route, but the compensation for their time and effort are known when they sign up.

I do think all athletes should be paid as if their training and play time were a work study position. They are putting in 1000% more effort and making the schools 1000000x more money than some random schlub with a TA work study or someone sitting behind a receptionists desk. There should also be no cap on how much they earn through that work study position, I know their was a cap on how much you could make when I was in school, but since these athletes don't really have a choice on how much they're training they should be compensated for all of it.

The problem I do have is the athletes not being able to profit off their own likeness. For instance the player who was forced to shut down their YouTube account. That's just plain absurd and none of the NCAAs business.

You have just outlined the model of becoming a human being in the world that should have existed before all the crying became relevant.. No Joke.

Clemson is who they are now and not who they were for the first hundred years of their existence strictly because they started buying 5-star players. They did it brazenly, everyone knew they were doing it, they got caught with multiple prospects posting wads of cash on social media, and nothing happened. Now, they don't need to do that. Auburn got a title solely because they outbid other teams for Cam Newton. Unless you're very stupid about it (see: Ole Miss, USC, etc.) cheating has always been worth it in CFB.

What if...instead of paying student athletes...

The NCAA was forced to take their millions in profits and funnel it back to the schools to help combat rising tuition costs for general ed students?

Do you got a link for the Clemson stuff?

My old man's cousin played for them. I'd love to be able to bring that up at the next reunion.

Such a novel idea, but I can see the NCAA just laughing when the idea is brought up.

I agree 100% but it as to be something better than what’s currently proposed or the “cheaters” will simply do this;

They need a minor league. Despite the statistic saying most will never play pro ball, that is still the main goal for most student-athletes. The CFL & Arena Leagues should change their rules and go after HS players but I suspect it’s not about being paid...it’s about being paid millions b/c that kind of money wouldn’t be offered by the likes of the CFL, Arena or any other ‘minor’ league.

This must’ve all stemmed from the television revenue which we didn’t see until a few decades ago. I never recall hearing cries of “pay the players” back in the 80s/early 90s. So when fans & players see coaches salaries escalate after the tv revenue flows in, they feel they need a piece, too.

My argument is the HC is what attracts the players so they’re the ones more responsible for any increased revenue vs the players. As ND fans, we’ve all learned the majority of the elite HS kids are NOT committing to a school...they’re committing to the HC b/c of what he has proven on the field & what he can do to get them to the next level.
