My question is how legal is falling asleep at the wheel of an autopiloted or self-driving car?

I would assume it's not legal, nor would Tesla endorse such a thing. I was half joking. Basically my point was that it'd be nice to zone out and not worry about driving on a long stretch of road for 60 miles at a time. The autonomous mode still needs driver input occasionally. Actually falling asleep would be highly ill-advised.

I think they'll probably just switch to taxing the odometer.

But a good chunk of a state's taxes come from license plate/registration fees, so they'll have to recoup that lost revenue too.

Then they'll have to see how that affects driving mileage when fewer people have to shoulder the burden of the highways...

Why would that be lost? Gas or electric, you have to title the car and register for plates every year.

Tax the odometer? Interesting thought. How do you report it or does it automatically get uploaded through the brains of the car? Big brother watching you?

Not about Tesla, but this doesn't warrant its own thread.

Self-driving cars: Does anybody actually want them? Discuss.

Not unless everybody else is in one, as well.

We put our lives in the hands of computers every day in some way, shape or form, so it's less about trusting the computer, and more about trusting other drivers to interact with my driving-computer appropriately.

Yeah I'm writing about this for my MBA class and my big conclusion is that the limits to implementation will be consumer-driven and not technology-driven. There's no doubt the technology will be ready fairly soon. I just think it's going to be a tough sell. I feel the same way about virtual reality. It's technologically fascinating but I don't see tons of people lining up to buy it.

Technology is an easy sell. It always sells. What you have to predict and support is the time frame in which it's adopted by the market. I mean, my 92 year old Grandmother orders pizzas from her Domino's app.

Everyday in an other tab, I've been working on a new technology start up that a year ago was really Big Brother meets Skynet sh!t. Every month I learn about 10 new ideas that make our baby seem less intrusive. It's gone from, "I hope people don't say this is Star Trek BS" to... "We have got to hurry the patent attorney's up on these items... we have to move now!"

* We actually used projected adoption rates of SDA's in our investment presentations.

I drive long, boring routes pretty regularly. I'd trade my license for a self-driving car in a heartbeat. Never been in an accident, never gotten so much as a parking ticket, just would much rather read, sleep or work for 12 hour routes than fight semitruck drivers as they fall asleep, teenage girls as they text, and a never-ending parade of people who never face consequences for inappropriate use of turn signals. Since automated cars could run much more quickly, too, I am definitely onboard. Why wouldn't you want to improve safety, fuel economy, and get to your destination twice as fast?

Actually, this would be my first choice for a new PHX-OC-Vegas shuttle. Minus the Thule gear box.

Thule boxes are great. Throwing wet waders inside your vehicle is for the poors.

If I'm dropping $125k on a Richie Rich wagon, I'll have $50k left over to get one of these for my Trail Creek Trout Extractions.

Now Trail Creek... That place is definitely for the poors!

Not when you have a branch that runs through your property. No equipment needed besides a Wustof filet knife, aluminum foil and a charcoal grill.

But Thule boxes are also for the poors that are on road trips to Gatlinburg.

That's a classic Catch-22.

There have already been tests in self driving semi's. Including a beer run. But no doubt a Tesla semi would be a game changer.

I believe it's a game changer because I believe Musk can actually bring it to market. Those other ones may as well be concept cars.

Musk's plan to rule the planet seems to be coming along nicely.
