Huge.
Seriously. Jack might go down as the best AD in Notre Dame history. The work he has put in to make sure that we stay independent and in control of our own destiny has been epic. He went into the BCS talks in a position of strength despite the fact that we haven't been in the National Title picture in over 20 years. He was able to convince the rest of the conferences that we should not only have a seat at the table, but that we should have the same power as any conference involved.
Seriously. The college football world has shrunk. In the new playoff picture, you are either in a major conference or you are Notre Dame.... anybody else may as well be a mid major that has to go undefeated in order to have a hope to get into the playoffs.
Bravo Jack.... bravo...
I agree with everything you said to a T... except fro the part I bolded. 1993 was within the past 20 years. And we were preseason #2 in 2006 and in the top 10 or top 5 for basically the entire year.
This is so exciting. Dare I say that Jack is Machiavellian. It was funny listening to a couple of douches on ESPN radio - that wrestler dude and his sidekick, don't care to know their names - doing a whole 30 minute segment on the question of "why is ND even involved in the BCS and championship talks - they are irrelevant and shouldn't be there. Boise St. deserves to be at the table more than Jack and ND."
Wooly said it right - I tried to rep him, but it wouldn't let me. Jack is dominating the NCAA right now, and imho, totally to the benefit of Notre Dame and what it stands for.
Look at what has happened.
#1. Notre Dame is being courted by most every conference and can pick where it wants to play Olympic sports.
#2. Notre Dame's football independence is more secure than it has been in the past 8 years. Again I think this is AWESOME! (yeah, I used CAPS!)
#3. The BCS has been destroyed, along with it's ridiculous formula weighting heavily the "coaches" biased assed opinions. And people don't seem to really get this.
#4. ND can get to the Championship without a conference, and can play the schedule it wants.
#5. And now, the major bowls - not in the playoff, have the ability to relax their requirements to play there. Now the Orange, Fiesta, Sugar, and even Rose (under certain circumstances) will court and beg for the irrelevant Irish. This means bigger $$$$ for ND and better games, assuming we are decent.
#6. The Frickin' Orange Bowl!!!!! Yeah baby!!!! I went to the 1990 and 1991 Orange Bowls vs Colorado. Great time, great fun, great bowl. I'm so excited that it can happen again.
Also, anyone else think this Orange Bowl tie in might just be a hint of a future Big 12 alliance? Seems to make sense.
Go Jack!!!!!!
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick is one of nine athletic directors at a major university that is making more than $1 million annually, according to data gathered by USA Today.
Swarbrick falls between Ohio State's Gene Smith and Oklahoma's Joe Castiglione on the list. The highest paid athletic director is Vanderbilt's David Williams, who makes $3.2 million.
Vandy?
That is interesting.
Vandy did away with their actual athletic department. It's now something like "Activities Department" (unless they changed back to having an actual Athletic Department) and is headed by a vice-chancelor (or something along that title-- a position above just a director of athletics). So I guess the extra pay is because he is over all athletics, in addition to all school-sanctioned, non-sport activities.
So like ceramics club and the debate team?
He was also mentioned as a candidate for the Big 12 commissioner.Wow, I had no idea Jack was considered for NCAA President in 2002 and 2009. Everything I know about him makes me believe the NCAA would not be in the mess they are today had he been hired.
Does anyone know if they picked Emmert over him or if his name was pulled from consideration before the decision?
