Hi everyone,
I'm an ND student. Ive been following Irish Envy for a while since my freshmen year. I'm taking summer classes at ND right now.

I live on the fourth floor of Siegfried, where most of our beloved football team stay for the summer. Right across the hall are Eilar Hardy and Jalen Brown. Mike Floyd and Robby Toma live next to them. Anyway, I just had an interesting conversation with Stephon Tuitt. As a little nerdy asian man, I was scared at first by his size. But then he started to ask about my engineering major and was very curious about the technical aspect of my work, which was rarely asked by the d-bags i lived with all year long. Stephon is really a man of character.

At first, I had some prejudice against football players in general. But after some social interactions with the football guys in my section, my thinking has changed a lot.
I just want to let ND fans on this board know that coach Kelly is doing a great job of developing characters.
Let's all hope for a strong season.

I don't even see how this would be trolling...

So Tuitt surprised you by not being a douche and actually being a polite intellectual?

...Coach Kelly seems to be a bit if a character himself :)

Thanks for the post. Its nice to have some confirmation regarding what we all hope is the case...that those boys are pretty humble, grounded folks.

Hmm...Summer school...engineering student...it can only mean you asked for it...This about right?

Cool story. No point in treating football guys different than any other student... you'll find that most (exception: the Clausens of the world) are really funny and down to earth guys. And they also know how to party much better than anyone else on campus if you're into that.

I think that's pretty self-explanatory. I don't know about you, but several/most of our football players in my high school team were either dumb jocks, complete douches or both, especially the talented ones (not all though). And these were the guys who thought they were big sh!t and picked on their 'less cool' classmates. The OP admits to being a little guy and a little 'nerdy'. So then he sees this behemoth of a man and probably expected more of the same. Instead, he found what many of us knew through 3rd hand knowledge, who Ishaq really is.

Remember, not everyone is as obsessed with recruiting as we are, and the OP most likely doesn't follow recruiting as fanatically as many members of this board does. And that's OK.

Thanks for the story superasian, and welcome aboard!!!

EDIT: And HTCI...no worries; your faux pas has disappeared magically!!!

Clausen got a bad rep. I'll leave it at that.

I agree. It seems like his less than tactful announcement at the CFB HoF permanently tarnished his image for many people.

Toss in a disappointing W-L record (despite putting up record breaking numbers his junior year) and a decision to leave early for the NFL... it's easy to bag on Clausen, but it's also lazy.

He matured a lot over his three years at ND, and he left as one of the best QBs we've ever had. It's not his fault Weis couldn't put a defense together.

His less than "tactful announcement actually" was tactful although usually misquoted or misrepresented by disgruntled fans whose expectations were fulfilled (See Powlus). I hope every ND recruit comes with the hope of winning 4 championship rings for ND. Despite many posts to the contrary he never guaranteed anything.

He played after arm surgery behind possibly the poorest performing OLines in ND history (Powlus's Oline in '94 was also porous) and was he beaten like a ragdoll. Played his last season on an injured foot. He was a gamer.

Thanks again superasian for the Tuitt tidbit.

Oh man, the stories I have about some of the football players are hilarious, especially with the new recruits. Lynch is great haha. When I graduate, I think I'll just make a thread with all of these mini stories, it'll be good for a laugh or two.

But yes, these guys are super down to earth and are students just like us. I find it awesome that some of the guys on the team like hanging out with other students and not just with the team.

I thank you for this comment, even if many don't get it. It saved me the "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" trouble.

Superasian, make hay while the sun shines, as they say. Neither the players nor the non-players are monolithic groups. There is much to be gained through interaction.

Take advantage of the two way street while you can.

Never had many interactions with the man, but ran with a lot of kids who saw him on a daily basis. No need to drag someone through the mud on this board but I will say that a lot of girls I knew did not have a high opinion of him and with good reason. Has literally nothing to do with Hall of Fame announcements or fan perceptions. That is all.

A member on this board told me that there have been people bragging about being football players's friends and relatives. Here's my reply to him:
I'm sorry for that misunderstanding I've caused, for I've never involved with a forum like this before and did not understand the culture, do's and do-not's of online forums. You can be assured that I was honest in my account, and my intention was nothing other than sharing my recent experience with the football players.

I do not claim to be friend of any of these players, and will not share anything that does not come from my own experience.

Gotta love ND athletes!

I remember one summer I was there for a camp called ND Vision and I was late to a meal and I was sitting alone, and Jonas Gray and Michael Floyd invited me to sit with them because they said no one should sit alone at a meal. It was cool because Jonas went to my 'rival' high school so it was really fun to talk to them! Then believe it or not they introduced me to Dayne Crist! I thought it was really cool because I was still in high school and they were willing to let me sit with them. Kind-hearted and classy! Love thee Notre Dame!

No apologies or explanation needed. Sometimes you get people with strange agendas on message boards, so some are skeptical of any new posters. Don't sweat it, though. If you aren't trolling that will become obvious. I appreciate you passing along the story about Stephon. Glad to hear he is as cool in private as we would have expected based on what we've heard about him.

Kinda on topic , but pretty off: how are the football players treated at ND? I'm in the athlete dorms at UF & my suitemate (my roommate and I share a bathroom with) is Jeff Driskal, with tons of with other athletes on the floor and building. I've been talking to him and they get it so good & easy. Any size bed, new scooters to go to class, room for themselves in usual 2 person room & the whole red carpet. We start class today and as of last night (when I woke him up bc a small party in my room), he didn't even know what classes he was taking. Do ND players get treated the same or are they more on their own and aren't idolized and spoon fed everything?

ps, the football players I've met has all been cool guys, even if most are retards.

No, athletes get integrated into the dorms like any other student and have to live on campus for 3 years. Very few athletes end up rooming with another athlete their first year (a lot of factors come into play here and it is dependent on the sport... but in general ND does random roommates and random dorms for every kid).

All in all, it is very different from typical "football factories" because they are actually real students living in real dorms and going to real classes... which is where I think a lot of the clamoring for paying athletes comes from... at a lot of schools (like UF apparently) ball players aren't treated like students at all. And that is quite sad.

I'm real excited about Tuitt. I think we forget about him a lot and that is strange to me. With Ishaq and Aaron enrolling early and suiting up for the BG game, Stephon kinda went to the backburner of our attention for a bit. But the reality of it is, Tuitt was the best "run stopping" DE prospect out of the three. When we get to the point where we have Manti, Nix, Tuitt, Lynch and Ishaq all on the same field.... we will see some opposing QB's checking the status of their life insurance policies before kickoffs.

IrishLax pretty much hit the nail on the head. With the exception of early enrollee football players, the incoming football players are randomly assigned a roommate during their freshman year. The early enrollee players get to pick their rooms for the next year with their dorm like everyone else. From the experience in my dorm, it seems like the football players are "randomly" assigned some of the better freshman rooms in the dorm, but that could just be a coincidence. Either way they are living with regular students.

The only special perks I think they get are the ability to choose classes first as well as have their own dining area, although I'm sure I'm forgetting about some other things. There certainly are no athlete dorms and they football players usually interact well with the other students. They do get the classic jersey chasing treatment from the ladies though that all football players across the country get.

I'd love to see the NCAA try to regulate that.

If you were to tell any rational fan that we would land all three of the Lynch/Tuitt/Ishaq trio, they would've said you were in dreamland.

Which raises the question: what will be 2012's dreamland trio?
