The problem I see is that their offense is ELITE on paper next year.

Bryce Love + Costello + Kaden Smith/Colbly Parkinson + I think all of their OL back besides one starter and they've got Foster Sarrell and Walker Little waiting in the wings. That's as good as it gets, besides at WR but they'll just get bailed out by PI flags per usual.

On defense, their starters are still solid and veterans... it's their depth that's scary for them if they have any injuries. I think they look like a top 10 team if healthy.

There's a reason David Shaw gets looks from NFL teams to be a head coach. Their recruiting is not amazing at Stanford, but their player development is as good in the FBS as any program around. They take a lot of lower rated athletes and turn them into absolute studs.

Player Development = Juice them up on steroids and play them as 5th year seniors.

Also, Stanford has low rates of attrition/transfers. Stanford has had four players transfer out (non-graduate transfers) in nine classes ('09-'17), five players in those nine classes put on medical scholarship.

Of the twenty-two enrollees in the Class of '15, eighteen are left for '18. (Thirteen were redshirts.) So despite low total numbers, impacting depth, Stanford tries to redshirt a high number of players. More are then available for fifth years, if they choose to. Due to lower class numbers, generally averaging twenty per year, eight of the '14 class of twenty-one will be fifth years. So, with scholarships available, generally, players stay at Stanford for their fifth years rather than go the graduate transfer route. Except 2011 when five players transferrred out for their fifth year so their total numbers dipped that year.

Because other schools will report their steroid test findings? (/sarcasm?)

LOI's are only binding for 1 year so technically this commitment means nothing and he could potentially be recruited again in 12 months time by every program in the nation.

Fair point. However, the only LDS player who signed initially with Stanford and ended up elsewhere after his two year mission was Taysom Hill, who ended up at BYU. Stanford changed coaches from Harbaugh to Shaw. But his reason for switching was that Stanford wanted him to show up in June and his mission ended in December and he wanted to start football in January. Lloyd, Fanauka, Heimuli, Reid, Barton, Fehoko, Kaufusi all played for Stanford after their mission.

Former Stanford QB, Keller Chryst, is reportedly going to visit Tennessee for his fifth year.

KJ Costello is out for the spring due to a hip injury.
Davis Mills is out for the spring after an ACL injury.

Stanford will not have a scholarship QB for spring practice. Junior walkons QB, Jack Richardson and Brent Peus, are expected to get a lot of reps this spring.

2018 Class QB signee, Jack West, enrolls in the fall and signee Tanner McKee will be on his mission.

The 2018 class added Trey LaBounty, a two star DE, who chose Stanford over Brown.

Defensive Back, Terrance Alexander, who received a redshirt for 2017, has decided to pursue a graduate transfer. Stanford lost two other DBs to graduation and two who decided to declare for the NFL early.

Don't throw shade at Trey LaBounty.

He's Trent Murphy 2.0... if they don't flip him to TE or OT. Perfect 3-4 OLB for Stanford. Shocked they waited so long to go after him. I had him on the 2018 Master List for ND's Drop position.

He's Peanut Tillman level when it comes FF's.

I wonder if ND expressed any interest here...

Stanford gets physical in Cardinal and White Spring Game
Walk-on quarterback Jack Richardson awarded scholarship after taking every snap in Cardinal victory
https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/04/14/stanford-gets-physical-in-cardinal-and-white-spring-game/

With the scholarship awarded to Richardson, Stanford now has 82 players on scholarship.

Richardson was the only healthy quarterback on the roster during the spring as K.J. Costello (hip) and Davis Mills (knee) sat out with injuries while Keller Chryst plans a transfer to Tennessee.

Love, Costello and Mills weren’t the only players watching from the sidelines. Among others MIA:

• cornerback Alijah Holder;
• inside linebacker Bobby Okereke;
• safeties Frank Buncom and Brandon Simmons;
• center Jesse Burkett;
• running back Trevor Speights.

“It was hard to just be so physical for so many days in a row like we like to be just because of the lack of numbers,” Scarlett said.

Lots of ND targets were at Stanford's junior day. Update by Wiltfong

Stanford junior day hits the mark for top targets

"Stanford was a dream from when he was small," DiCosmo's father Anthony said. "To have this opportunity is surreal. Still has official visits with ND and Michigan too.

"I think Aeneas has a clear understanding of what he is looking for as he pursues his college career. For him, the expectations and opportunities this experience will offer him as a student is just as important as those expectations the university and coaching staff will place on him as an athlete. We’ve done unofficial visits to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Penn State, Boston College and Cal Berkley. Aeneas also camped at Notre Dame and Stanford last year. Stanford has been very unique in culture and recruiting process. The biggest takeaway from this weekend was from the players And students I talked to. The student body has a genuine respect for their fellow classmates that play football. It doesn’t seem like they are put on a pedestal or offered any special treatment at school, or with admissions for that matter. And the players generally seem to be on the same page and understand what is expected of them in the classroom. So if you are looking to really be challenged and pushed in the classroom and on the field, this is the place. If you are looking for rockstar treatment and coasting through the books, maybe it will underwhelm you. As a parent, I walked away truly feeling like Stanford not only offers the very best of both worlds, but it expects the athletes to take full advantage of the opportunities both of those world has to offer. A sprawling campus nestled in Silicon Valley, a diverse student body with student from around the world. 4-1 student to professor ratio. An Ivy League caliber education. A winning attitude and culture not just built around football, but athletics across the board. It’s a special place."

What an absolute crock of crap. It's shocking how many intelligent people will allow themselves to be quoted saying this.

Certainly ROI on degrees' spreadsheets (IE poster made up one, too) are presented. Stanford football always accepts a lot of PWOs, and Stanford has free tuition for students whose parents make less than $120,00, which may be secondarily attractive to scholarship players who know a h.s. teammate may be accepted and go there. Ten of their 2017 class of 14 were redshirted with one reason that it helps them acclimated to academic demands.

I am still getting used to Stanford scheduling OVs in the summer.

It truly is absurd how well they've done with the propaganda, especially considering:
1. It isn't close to true. They get LOTS of help on admissions.
2. Many students ABSOLUTELY do hold them in contempt, and have posted such online or wrote op-eds about it (I'll see if I can google them up later).
3. They got caught distributing a list of easy classes for athletes, and got super embarrassed about it. They had been publishing that list for years and then stopped when they got caught because it was bad optics... now they just do it by word of mouth.

But props to David Shaw for cultivating this perception... perception = reality. And it's not like the overall idea isn't rooted in fact -- Stanford is a great school and they graduate almost all their players with meaningful degrees. It's just the icing that they put on it that always makes me roll my eyes so hard... like these kids actually think they aren't getting help to get into Stanford? Or special treatment once there?

Stanford athletes had access to list of 'easy' courses:

A drama class in “Beginning Improvising” and another in “Social Dances of North America III” were among dozens of classes on a closely guarded quarterly list distributed only to Stanford athletes to help them choose classes.

Stanford officials said the list was designed to accommodate athletes’ demanding schedules and disputed that the list was made up of easy courses. Officials discontinued the list last week after student reporters working for California Watch began asking about it.

The list, which has existed at least since 2001, was widely regarded by athletes as an easy class list. More than a quarter of the courses on the list did not fulfill university general education requirements.

Stanford junior day hits the mark for top targets

My perspective on this is, it's not really a needle mover for ND. The realistic ND targets are Cornelius Johnson, STM, and DiCosmo. You could say maybe Elijah Higgins since he's trying to visit ND. Pakola, Latu, etc. can't be considered losses, if they were to end up at Stanford, as there was little chance they make it off the west coast as it is. On the realistic targets, this is how I view it.

Johnson, would hate to lose him to Stanford, he's arguably my favorite WR target on the board. That makes 1, that would hurt. Though that could vanish quickly with Tj Sheffield.

STM, would be the 4th best DB in our class. Like the prospect and I'd take him, but CB is not much of a need, and losing him to Stanford is certainly not a needle mover. We have A LOT of time to find a replacement, IF, the staff even chose to do so. We are loaded up on DB's, absolutely nothing to worry about there.

DiCosmo, though I'm a big fan, he's also a #2 to Nana on our WDE board/class. So, the severity of losing this recruitment, is kind of meh. Like the player, but it has very minimal impact on our class, as of today. Plus, there are other #2 WDE's that we are after that are equally attractive talents, should we miss here. Another situation of, if we land Nana, we have a lot of time to look for a #2.

That's not why they redshirt.

Not "one of the reasons"? Yeah, it is.

Little, Walker, Wedington and Parkinson - you can probably see why they did not - and why Mills, Johnson, Wayne-Perry did. But Adebo, Johnson, etc.

Stanford redshirted 22 of the 25 in the 2016 class. They run thin on their depth and, with academic integration, have more of their redshirted players stay and often play five years. Having smaller signing Class sizes, keeping players is significant.

Anyway, their Class of 2019 scholarship numbers with a class of 14 last year and 16 Seniors without eligibility, they should end up with a bigger class (for them) in the low 20s, since their current count is about eighty-two total. We may be competing for more of the same players this year.

Stanford Sept schedule includes USC, Oregon and ND.
