That's not the point. There is a stigma to it. There are plenty of people that see the covering of the mural as the downturn of our program. Whether they see that as a symbol, curse or simple coincidence is beyond the point.

But the stigma is irrelevant. If BK and staff continue the upward trajectory and win 10-12 games a year, a few playoff appearances and a natty no one is going to complain and say it's just not the same because we can't see TDJ.

I'm all for seeing TDJ from the stadium but not at the expense of improving the in game atmosphere. The stadium desperately needs jumbotrons and blasting music, not a view of a mural.

Is anyone else pissed that a 400 million dollar renovation doesnt add any more bowl seats but adds premium seats that most fans will never be able to afford. Why put classrooms in a football stadium??????????? is there not enough buildings around campus already? I want a stadium that holds 100,000 plus!

The original question was "why should we do it". That stigma is one of the reasons I listed. No one ever claimed that it would help our on field performance. lol

You where the one that brought it up in context of not having won a title since the view was blocked?

Which is true. Where did I write that showing it would change that?

Just stated a well known fact that MANY people use as a reason for not liking it. Some see it as a bad omen, some see it as sign of our difficult times of late. Whatever the thought around it, no where did I say or imply that covering it was the cause of poor on field performance.

I haven't seen the numbers, but I bet the number of "regular" seats are actually decreased. Because they are going to be made bigger. That is the way I heard it. But what the heck do I know. My guess is they won't be 2X6's anymore, either.

because box seats improve acoustics, move blue hairs out of the stadium, and will pay for themselves in short order. If we increase general seating you can kiss the sell out streak good bye.

I'm more sad than pissed. I think fewer programs are wanting to expand as 1080p and soon 4K televisions get the best seat in the house. Ticket sales nationwide are down, because they're expensive and TVs are so nice. I don't think we'll ever see 100,000 in the stadium, but 90,000 would've been nice to hit.

This frees the lower level seats, opening them up to us poor schmucks.

Adding academic space to a massive structure that was previously only used a dozen times a year is borderline brilliant. To keep the campus walkable in an acceptable building footprint density, they either needed to build taller buildings or be more efficient with their space. They wisely chose the latter. What's more Notre Dame the a seamless merging of academic and athletic excellence?

Are you serious? who the hell cares about a sell out streak. What does a sell out streak provide us? If notre dame doubled the stadium size maybe ND would actually be able to pay the assistant coaches above minimum wage. Maybe the stadium could actually get loud. And just for arguments sake, Michigan has had over 100000 people in its stadiumfor every game since 1975, im pretty sure Notre Dame could easily sell out every home game if they had that size stadium.

I'm a non-traditionalist in every aspect of ND football and related discussions in my lifetime, but I think having the stadium (and opposing QB) see TD Jesus would be awesome.

And we all know Jesus loves his Irish, so put a video board opposite of the big guy so he can watch ND highlights during timeouts.

And field turf.

Is that too much to ask for?

The box seats look great, but they still have work to do on both ends of the stadium and on the surface IMO.

Cut a hole in your stadium if there are structural problems and it is needed. Cut a hole in your stadium if you need a place for actual humans to enter and exit the building. Cut a hole in your stadium if the people sitting in those seats insist upon paying in confederate money. Don't cut a hole in the stadium so that an inanimate picture can watch (?) the game (with the worst view ever, BTW) or because you can't wait until after the game to look at said picture.

If this is ugly, then i'm Miles Davis...

There are no plans to remove this building. Period.

We didn't bring up nostalgia, you did with your comment regarding that it wasn't that old. We are talking about "heritage" and "culture". Natural grass has nothing to do with either.

Are you really saying that you couldn't see it inside of the stadium from the field? I grew up going to almost every home game. I vividly remember being able to see it from the field. You are simply wrong on this.

Nice to meet you Miles!

michigan has 5x the student enrollment ND does. And they don't sell out all of their games.

My contribution to the Touchdown Jesus subject is this:

I have sat at that end of the stadium several times, and those are, in my opinion, the best seats in the house. Partnered with the band, the student section, the player entrance, and the American flag, it's an area that is almost always rockin'. I would hate to see a gap put in between that vibe.

I love Touchdown Jesus, and can remember when it was visible from the original House that Rockne built. Those were special days...

But I don't see the need to recreate them, when the mystique is still very much alive for those who love ND.

Just my two, fellas.

I like that ND is making changes. Aggressive recruiting until the finish line, uniform changes, and now stadium renovations that are great for the whole campus not just the football squad. I honestly believe that ND needed to modernize their football brand and Kelly has done a great job doing that while still winning. I'm telling you guys, I'm only 29 and there's a big difference in these Kelly teams and the Davies, Weis, and Willingham teams of old.

Totally agree. I find the TDJ love to be nonsensical.

couple questions/thoughts:

i assume they are going to install actual SEATS (rip out the planks) with the $400M?

dont think for one minute the "grey hairs" are just going to hand over their "gold seats and lower planks" and run up to the new boxes, so others can fill the lower seats and liven up the crowd down low. those tix are VERY important and have been passed down thru MULTIPLE generations of ND families. no, these new boxes will be sold before the first game--to the highest bidder. bank on that.

i love ND and always will but for $400M i expected more changes to the stadium. GC needs no/or minimal structural changes to old interior rockne/new stadium structures....essentially just bolting on to exsiting east side, taking out old press box and bolting on to west side.
ND is overpaying for what they are actually getting IMO. it should cost a lot...but $400M???

Anyone concerned that the structures being constructed on the East and West sides of the stadium are actually to big? I mean the more I look at it the more massive they seem. Really like the design but idk how it will fit into ND's campus.

Here is the way I look at the upgrades. My Grandpa saw the original and the expansion during his years and he only ever complained about coercing, executing, and the refs. I will see the next expansion and it won't change a thing. Still ND and ND football.

So I was bored tonight and looked up the University of Notre Dame master plan.

https://dl.boxcloud.com/bc/2/951e17...bce8fb1ea7956198789aa056094379e5739b361b774c/

As I kinda suspected when I saw that there would be classrooms in the stadium, Notre Dame plans on creating a quad south of the stadium as well as lining it with buildings on both sides, truly integrating the stadium into the campus. Would be amazing but idk the feasability of it. Would need a couple parking structures which are butt ugly.

They're butt ugly for two reasons. One, the planning. Today most proper parking garages are hidden behind buildings, not on a main street. Two, the architecture. Most garages are built by cheap ass local governments that did not care to investigate the benefits of a proper facade on a parking garage, so they don't come with them. It's not hard though: https://www.google.com/search?q=par...SIygH8sYD4CA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=638 I'd be interested to see what an architect can do with Notre Dame's gothic style (which the university didn't even recommit to until the 1990s, explaining most of the campus' ugly buildings).

Proper planning and not being cheap and you will barely notice, and/or you'll appreciate architecturally, a parking garage when it's done.

Only parking garage I found with a remotely Gothic style.

It certainly could be done, I just have my doubts as to how it would fit in with the rest of the campus.

Here in Tallahassee, free shoes u has done similar w/ their stadium.

There is a lot of space for academic departments, conference rooms, meeting rooms, mass media hubs, etc. in those structures. Doak Campbell isn't as centrally located as ND Stadium, but fsu put a lot of facilities there. ND's stated goal is to make the facility a more integral part of the campus than for just the 6 home games per year and I think it's a good idea for them to go in this direction.
