This is a joke. He isn't even a good punter and you are gonna make him a captain. SMH

From the pictures from practice it looks like a lot of guys will be wearing the Neuroshield collars this year. Hopefully it keeps everyone out of concussion protocol so no one misses any practice time.

Good.
Also excited about Michael Young. I think he’s going to be a good one for us.

Tillery is too inconsistent for me and didn't really mature until just last year. Coney and Dex? They're both good players but if you went to jail during your time at Notre Dame, you should never be in consideration for captaincy.

Yeah, I could see the jail being a thing for Dex and Coney. Tillery, though, grew up a lot last year and chose to come back to keep growing. I could def see him as a captain by September. Also forgot about Love, though he’s just a junior, right?

Been saying this since he signed. I've been really high on Young because his acceleration looks like it's step above.

He's streets ahead in that department.

If this is legit, it's excellent news because I had 100% written him off.

He was really good coming out, and almost looked like a can't-miss WR.

Then he had that leg injury, and spent last year redshirting. Hopefully he's just had a run of really bad luck through his first two years, and reports that he looked good are legit.

HOWEVER, this came from Coach D, so I take it with a huge grain of salt until we see it with our own eyes in the B&G game.

O'Malley at II noted McKinley looked more fluid than the past and had some nice catches

I figured DJ Morgan would be splitting backup rover reps with JOK and Robertson, but it appears that he was working as the 2nd-string BUCK during the first practice.

That is an intriguing option athletically if he is big/strong enough to hold at the point of attack.

I hope being a captain puts a little internal pressure on Newsome to do better. Hi spunting was all over the map last year and not all that good.

Newsme being a captain is a joke. He isn't even worthy of being the starting punter.

this should be a coach appointed position but we are also talking about a head coach that let his oline pick a coach.

Thats awesome that he is part of these groups. But you can't give someone a position that isn't a good player.

This is a joke. He isn't even a good punter and you are gonna make him a captain. SMH

Soooo, are you just going to keep spouting this in any/every thread?

Pride over Watkins at CB?

yeah but they also have tony jones running w/ the 2nd when it has been noted that he is the most complete back blah blah blah...so as always with this time of year, don't worry who is in which grouping until fall or the latter part of spring.

Why isn't he a good punter? He rarely shanks it and averages over 40 yards which means his average is really higher when you include punts intentionally kicked short to drop inside the 20. Hardly ever gets blocked and rarely out kicks the coverage. He was a Wuerffel award watch candidate last year, too. I honestly never felt anxious watching him kick. What's your problem with him?

Like I've said, I have no problem with him as a captain, but his punting was not good last year. I don't care about average but he shanked way too many last year and I can't recall him being able to flip the field very often. As already been stated, he was better two years ago. I expected him to be better or no worse last year, but he digressed IMO.

So, you're, knowingly, cherry picking stats?

Not at all. I realize stats can have value, but I don't care about average because pooch kicks bring the average down. On our side of the fifty, did he get a decent kick off with good hang time or did he shank it or only hit it for 35 yards? He had a lot of bad kicks on our side of the 50 last year. I realize that a punter is not going to be perfect all the time, but as already noted by someone, his sophomore year was much better than last year.

I'm still confused.

1) You said you don't care about averages (so, that is cherry picking)
2) You just admitted that poor punts are averaged out against good punts, therefore resulting in an "accurate" measure of a punters' ability.

So, averages are average?

You're clearly punting too much "weight" on remembering the bad punts and forgetting about the good ones... I can remember him pinning inside the 10 multiple times (including some within a couple yards)...I also remember a couple of boomers flipping the field terrifically.

You're experiencing confirmation bias, whether you admit it or not.

I don't think this old school mindset holds water anymore. Introducing distractions with ties to previous shortcomings makes a ton of sense. Training the players to focus on what they can control regardless of what's going on outside the objective is exactly what we needed more of mentally last year, but we aren't in a place where everyone needs to be torn down and rebuilt. I'm a fan of these S&C changes, especially after the gains we saw last year.

They play games and practice with noise all the time. They play on a national stage regularly with lights and distraction. Doesn't seem to have the impact IMO.

As for the drill sergeant mentality, it only makes sense to the extent you can tie it to the objective. BVG did plenty of yelling and being a dick, but that didn't make us competent. Just lighting up a person for messing up and setting a hardcore challenge does nothing to spur growth and development in a player or professional if they don't give a shit about the objective. So show them the turnover chain, the smoke and all the BS at Miami that got them all so turned around. Drill into them that they control the outcome and have support to stay locked into the objective. Then put them in positions where they can succeed incrementally. That's how you make correct behaviors second nature.

There's being a dick and applying pressure. Not sure you understand RL. I've experienced and applied this type of pressure and you can find out a lot of about a person's ability and fortitude. I know this does correct behaviors. I know.

As for the fight or flight thing, that's a technical pet peeve of mine and no knock on you, but it doesn't make sense in this context unless you want everyone to run.

Fight/flight is a technical pet peeve...? I was using BK's words not mine. And it does make perfect sense in this context. Not sure you understand it....

I appreciate the post but I don't believe you know what you're talking about. Further, it was merely a suggestion.

I think you're experiencing the bias as well. Never said he didn't have some good kicks and I'm not ignoring them like you think, yet you say I am. You think he was great last year. I disagree. To me he was very inconsistent last year. We're going to disagree and that's okay.
