So at 5:30 this morning, my dog decided to make a new friend in the back yard. Instead, the skunk ignored her advances and sprayed her right in the face.

We didn't have much to work with, so any advice on how to get the smell out of her coat/the house? She's currently "airing out" in the garage after her first bath, but I wasn't satisfied with the first remedy I tried.

Canned tomatoes.

You also might want to visit the "gun" thread for next time. I'd suggest a 20 gauge pump-action with a full choke. Easy enough for the kids to use.

I was walking my dog on my aunts property a few summers ago and we both got sprayed by a skunk. It fukin sucks... We didn't even know the bastard was there...

I used basic dish soap and gave her a bath in the lake and then let her swim in the lake all day. Seemed to kill the smell.

Good luck!

Fly bait to get rid of the skunk...thing won't make it 20 yards.

Fly bait with coke/pepsi

make sure you keep your pets and kids away from it though....EXTREMELY poisonous.

My parents have used this before, works fairly well. Note: from now on, you may notice that your dog will smell a bit like skunk briefly anytime they get wet, regardless of what methods you use to remove the stench:

De-Skunking Dogs - How to Remove Skunk Smell from Dogs

The basic formula is always the same, and it tends to do better than store bought Skunk products or the tomato juice bath.

1 Qt 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp. liquid soap

Follow the instructions at the link though, because you don't want to put this stuff in a spray bottle or anything.

No joke, I was 100% sure this was a thread about Michigan when I opened it.

If my dog had been accosted by essence of skunkbear I would have to put her down.

Regular skunk is much more manageable.

This is the quick fix I tried this morning. I didn't get the "chemical reaction fizzing" that they talk about though and I didn't have enough to completely scrub her face, chest and front legs. She's a decent sized husky and I only had one bottle of peroxide to use.

The other issue is that I'm on a new-hire probation period at work so I couldn't call-in or use sick time or anything, so she's on her own for a few hours to air out until I can get home at lunch.

And my coworkers hate me haha.

I used to hunt with hounds all the time, running into skunks on occasion. The tomato juice bath never seemed to work for me. I used white vinegar to neutralize some of the odor. Bottom line, remedies work some, but only time will get rid of the odor 100%.

Good Luck!

In all honesty, there is not much you can do. The constant stench will go away rather soon with what you are doing, but it will still sometimes come out if they get wet for years.

Yep. Killed 5 racoons so far in the last 2 months. It's called Golden something.

Same here. I was getting ready to say the Skunkbears are the ones that are going to need help after we put the beating on them this year.

Thanks for the input everybody. Once I had to leave for work it became a lost cause I guess. I might grab some of the OdoBan that Bogs mentioned for damage control, but the house, clothes, furniture and dog will just need to wait it out for the odor to leave on its own I guess.

Get some granulated coyote piss from a Cabela's type place and sprinkle it around the perimeter of your yard. Coons, Opossums, Skunks, etc. will stay out.

Skunk spray at its core is oily. Therefore using dishsoap will remove this oil...cant speak for it's effectiveness on furniture/carpet/etc but it will get the smell off your dog. My dog got skunked 2 or 3 years ago and this was all that would help.

I think he wants to keep the dog.

Odor Ban will get anything out, relatively inexpensively, without destroying what you want to clean.

If you want a green, kid safe solution to your varmint problem, purchase an Irish Terrier. My friend had one terrier, Finbar, who was about 17 when he passed. He had been far too old to hunt much toward the end. So, the local critter population built up on his property, roughly two acres located close to an in town game run (series of protected parklands near creeks).

Now he has a female, Grainne, and she has rid his two acres of all raccoons, possums, wood chucks, etc. And as fearsome as some of these creatures can be, they apparently give his property wide berth.

This dog is incredible. It is fearless and greatly feared by even deer and other dogs. Much bigger dogs. I am not interested in debate, but if I find much more evidence of coyotes in my neighborhood, I could well order my own male.

I would tend to be more interested in acquiring a larger male, with signs that coyotes my be inhabiting my neighborhood or at least passing through. That means I would have to figure out how I would keep him from running first. But once I have that worked out I am confident of my solution; pound for pound, I would take one in a fight against almost anything. You have to see them dig right down the hole, to believe it!

No poison, no threat of ricochets. From rodents to lupine derivatives, you would be covered, now and in the future. Also, none of the roaming cats that kill birds and bunnies (both of whom my kids love dearly) would frequent the property. Believe it or not I have never seen my friends Irish Terrier go after birds or rabbits!
