Essentially it says that they want this thing wrapped up quick and he hasn't been in direct contact with them and if he interviews it will be at the earliest Monday. Which according to this report is to late? Idk know why.

I'm reading between the lines on this next part...

But looks like there are two main boosters who aren't into 'style' they want a solid quality resume and on paper Fleck doesn't really have one.

I've thought Kiffin would be perfect for Houston since Hermy moved on. Kiffin could easily take that talent on a joy ride for a year or two then be primed for a big time program in the Midwest that will finally be ready to buy out its coach after a few 4-8 runs...

So Fleck isn't good enough for Oregon but is for us? Doesn't that contradict all the Fleck supporters in that ND should have higher standards? Guess their standards arent up to par with Oregon.

Honestly I don't care what Oregon thinks or does. I don't really put any stock in it. I do think they have a stronger commitment to winning football though.

I'd also guess that PJ will have his choice of several. He might simply prefer not to go out West. Aside from a two year stint playing for SF, he's been east of the Miss his entire career. He simply may have acted meh about the potential Oregon offer, and Oregon got miffed and is going another way.

Isn't almost any school who decides to sacrifice academic integrity for athletics? That's never gna happen here. So those looking for a commitment to football like Bama, Oregon, OSU etc better find a new team to root for.

I am not saying that makes it ok for people to be average at ND, but I do think if you want to go on yearly runs like bama, osu, and Oregon once were there's sacrifices that would be made that ND isn't and won't ever be willing to do.

I agree. I also don't think Oregon is in need of a new 'attitude' so to speak. We have deep rooted issues. I think Oregon just sucked it up and don't want to go back to being irrelevant.

Academics aside, I think Oregon values winning football more than ND. Facilities are only one example relevant to Oregon, but there are other ways to be committed to football outside of selling short on academics.

I'd just be happy if we dropped our holier than though attitude, and got a little attitude. We are at the end of the day the "Fighting" Irish. You could certainly tweak some academic "things" without totally abandoning academics. For instance making exceptions for kids to get in (foreign language BS requirements)... You can do that and still hold them accountable when they get here.

Oregon just needs a solid WC / up-tempo offensive guy to get right back in the mix. Someone that can relate to kids and go balls out.

This simply isn't true. We have top 10 talent; we should have top 10 finishes. We don't. It's mainly down to coaching.

The Mothership says Brohm at WKU and Neal Brown of Troy are leading candidates for UC.

I'd love Brohm, because I think he'd have a NY6 team by year three, before he takes a big job. Not as confident in Brown, but I'd still be okay with the hire.

Random question. How did you become a UC fan?

I am a Cincinnatian by birth. Grew up in my grandparents' house, who have had season tix to UC football and basketball for 60+ years now.

My love for UC came before my love for ND, but I am much more invested in ND than I am UC.

Either coach would be good for UC but I agree.... Brohm would be my first choice - and no - not because I am a Hilltopper at heart. Brohm if as good a young coach as there is out there right now.

If Brohm had two options, a job in the B1G (even if it is lowly Purdue) and Cincy (old Big East, right?) why on earth wouldn't he pick the B1G job?

UC is an easier road to the next bigger job IMHO. PU.... odds are stacked against him from the start. Cinci has a decent base to recruit from as well. I'd easily pick the UC job over PU. It's been proven that UC and contend for the conference championship as well...

He could right the ship in UC in 3-4 years, and move up. PU.... well I don't know if you can ever really right that ship with OSU, Mich, Wisc, and now PSU on the rise. Raising PU would have a ceiling of middle of the pack in the BIG, and taking Mich, OSU, PSU, and ND's left overs on the recruiting trail.

Hmm. That may all be true, but I don't take a non-P5 job when I have a P5 offer. I don't think Cincy is at the level of Boise State where you even think about that. Maybe thats just me. And its not like the PU job is shit, its just a tall order.

Of course they do. What else do those schools have if it isn't for athletics, just a degree comparable to any directional school.

I am by no means saying ND shouldn't be committed to winning, or even more committed. However, the extent to that commitment does have a different ceiling than other football factories.

So while I'd like to see the "holier than thou" attitude bent in favor of football dominance, That same attitude is one of our separating positive points right.

Also to play devil's advocate, maybe BK was already given that extended lease and it resulted in multiple academic suspensions and scandals. Therefore leash shortened? We may never be privy to that?

I agree with this. Easier to win at UC VS Purdue. Hazell was a good coach and Purdue destroyed him. Also, the AAC is the best group of 5 conference. And if the big12 or ACC expand UC will be at the top of their lists.

With any kids, you run the risk of scandals. Kids do stupid things, even at places like Harvard.... They've had academic and other scandals over the last few years. Even Yale Basketball a few years back too. There is risk everywhere... Nobody is blaming reduced academic standards at Harvard or Yale??

IMO, If a coach wants some latitude with kids, give it to them.... as long as they are up to the challenge of ensuring they go to class (real classes) and perform. I'm not saying take every kid regardless of scores or classes, but borderline kids, and kids without foreign language should get a chance to rise to the occasion if they understand the requirements and sign up for the responsibility. The Bus is always a great example of bad kids doing good here at ND.

I did not.

When I played junior high football, I had a coach that had attended ND and played for Lou in the late 80's. Every year, he would take the out-going 8th graders to an ND game after the junior high season was over, as a reward for making it through the youth organization and putting the time in. He got the hookup on a nice hotel and stadium tours and whatnot.

I fell in love with ND when it was my turn for the trip, and now here I am, years later, arguing with the internet about ND football every day haha.

Next Purdue coach will make $4M. Next UC coach will make $2.5M. You guys better quit talking BS and recognize what $6M over the next 4 years means. Ya'll some pretend big ballers if you say you'd walk on that coin for a "better" job in Cincy.

The long view is using Cincy (a la Dantonio, Kelly, Jones) to springboard to a big P5 job. All the money in the world is not good enough to be at Purdue. Cincy is a G5 program thats an upgrade to the MAC. Success there means a Top25 school job and $5mill+ a year. Purdue means you are Hazell, will be fired after 4 seasons and return to the MAC level.

Do your homework. If you took a pool, I believe the vast majority would think the Purdue job is a lot better than at Cincy. It also has a much better tradition. Purdue's issues since Tiller left have been solely on the feet of Burke the former AD. IIRC, he came from the manufacturing industry when hired. If you know anything about manufacturing, that is one industry that is constantly looking to reduce operating expenses. Cheapskates everywhere. Burke brought that same mindset and ran the athletic program into the ground. Tiller got tired of dealing with Burke. Look at Burkes hires since. Low salaries and a low football budget.

President Daniels saw the empty seats and hired a new AD that is willing to spend the money including decent salaries for the coaches. Renovations are underway for improvements. If you go soly by Purdue's recent records, this job may not be as attractive as Cincy, but if you factor everything in, the Boiler job is the better one.

If my goal was making it to a top program I would... Mark D, Butch Jones, Brian Kelly all are recent Cinci coaches who turned success there into a good Power 5 job... When was the last Purdue coach who left for a better job?

You're missing the point. No Purdue coach is leaving for a better job because they're getting fired with crappy records. Why are they getting fired? Because they can't land talented kids. Why can't they land talented kids? Because there is very little money to recruit with and the facilities suck. When Dantonia took the MSU job, Sparty was 39-43 from 2000 to 2007. Prior to that, there was little to get excited about at MSU unless you go back to Duffy. Even Saban didn't set the world in fire at MSU. Purdue was 50-37 from 2000 to 2007.

So Dantonia didn't leave Cincy for a powerhouse B1G program. With Purdue upgrading their facilities and a new AD the Purdue job should be fairly attractive.

I assume that if Brohm is talking to Purdue, that means he's gonna go there and not think twice if Cincy calls. It's a power 5 job that offers significantly more money.

In addition to what Phork and Blaise said, there are a few reasons why a guy like Brohm might pass up the extra money and hit up UC for 3 years or so, though:

- UC does have some heavy-hitters in the UCats club that could front the extra cash or stock in local companies to get that salary up to a competitive ~3.5 mil/year
- If you take that *slightly* lower salary compared to what Purdue could probably offer, and combine it with the opportunity to recruit the state of Ohio, and (for Brohm specifically) to recruit 1.5 hours south between Lexington and Louisville, suddenly you're talking about a greater talent pool than what Purdue is trying to choose from each year... and this is in addition to the Florida and Georgia inroads that Tubberville made, and the next coach should be able to tap into.
- Purdue may be making a commitment to upping the resources and facilities, but Cincy is already there. They're constantly upgrading and staying ahead of the curve, and have been since they started their push for the Big XII.

Hazell was a tremendous young coach, with more energy and what was probably a better supporting cast than what Tommy Tubberville put around himself at UC... and yet a horrible UC team ran roughshod over Purdue this past year. It's going to take more than some facility and cash upgrades to dig Purdue out of the hole it's in, AND it's going to take longer to build a winner than it would at UC. And even if you build a winner, you're still doing it just to take a bigger job some day... so I could see why you might take ~1 million less per year to avoid the headaches on the way to a bigger job.

Listen man, if staying at Purdue is your goal. Hands down. If your goal is to increase your stock to jump to a top25 P5 team then UC is the direction you want to go. Tradition? Lul Wut? Here is a tip for you. Most kids these days don't really care too much about tradition. At Purdue you will not have a chance to win the BIG. There is a hundred reasons why you chose UC or Purdue.

I'll echo what some are saying:

Cincinnati is a much better job if you want to jump to a better program. If you want to maybe be somewhere 10-15 years and build a program I guess I would rather go to Purdue.
