Seems to me that Swarbrick's "Vote of Confidence" upset Kelly more than the losses this year. He may be looking to get away from the bearded one if the right opportunity arises.

However, I feel he deserves another shot. The coaches and the players deserve equal blame for the disappointing season.

I can definitely see why a program like Oregon or LSU or USC last year would be interested in Kelly.

I can also see why Notre Dame (and Kelly) might be ready to move on after seven years.

In other words he may be a very good coach who's not a good coach for Notre Dame any more. Both things can be true.

Kelly has had 2 seasons with 10+ wins in 7 years here. I guess he is just unlucky?

He is an 8-5 coach.

Houston job is going to be interesting. They have a top recruit QB in Kyle Allen next year that the right coach could turn into a stud. They also have the best DT in the country IMHO with Oliver. A campus in the hot recruiting spot doesn't hurt.

Briles, Sumlin, and Herman made an opportunity out of it. I think someone will smell opportunity and jump, even if they have no interest from the somewhat big 12.

My choice: Lane Kiffin

Major Applewhite is an Asst. there, and did not go with Herman back "home" to UT. He may slide up to take over.

The latest on 247 is that Oregon is focused on Fleck and Kiffin. As suspected they are not interested in Kelly.

It would make a lot more sense to me for Kiffen to take the Oregon HC job then become OC over at LSU. I might be a good move for Fleck. It's a step up to a Power 5 program, but not one of the elite blue bloods.

Five possible coaching jobs in 2017 for WMU's P.J. Fleck

NOTRE DAME

Why: It just seems to make so much sense, even if Notre Dame typically has preferred a bit more experience. That's why if you talk to those folks around the WMU program, while there's some optimism Broncos donors can raise enough money to make it worth Fleck's while to stay, it'd certainly be a moot point if the Irish came calling. It's one of the most prestigous jobs in the country, being part-coach/part-politician helps — check and check — and it's basically in Fleck's backyard.

Why not: For starters, Brian Kelly remains the coach, and the athletic director gave him a strong vote of confidence during a disastrous 4-8 season. That said, Kelly was irked AD Jack Swarbrick even went public with that, given this was Year 1 of a six-year extension. Perhaps that's why there have been multiple reports Kelly has been snooping around for other job options. Oregon could be a match, and Kelly always has gotten antsy about the next job, and this could be a seven-year itch.

Pay grade: USA Today says Kelly earns $1,624,730, but it's likely the six-year extension he signed in January pays him a lot more than that. Notre Dame is a private school, so it doesn't have to release the contract terms.

From a good source, we will know if Kelly is the Coach in 4 days or not, word is Jack wants him to stay while the upper power Alumni want him gone.

Indy radio guys seem to think it's more a combo of discipline issues, and him being prickly to press and AD. Never fully became the university yes man they wanted.

Considering his resume as an offensive assistant, I always wondered why he didn't get a shot as a head coach prior to 2011 with IU.
