Big fan of Styles returning kicks
I would be, but he's going to be a huge part of the offense this year and I'd rather he not start every series winded with possible ST injuries to add to the mix. We're so thin at the position and the other talent is either brand new or virtually unproven. Love Styles, so I hope this doesn't bite us in the ass.

For reference, the largest spread in the NFL last season was 17.5 points. Week 4 when the 6-0 Cardinals played the 1-5 Texans.

Hey everyone, long time lurker 1st time poster. I was intrigued on the topic regarding the spread of this game and I often place bets. Is there a thread that this is discussed or could an admin create one? Thanks in advance!

It has been, and will continue to be discussed in here.

That’s the best you will get in that regard, because this is a site dedicated to Pollyannas and Doomers that follow Notre Dame sports, not sports betting itself.

We tend to be too high or low on our team, depending on poster, and this is the last place on earth to gather a reasonable assessment of how a game will play out.

If you take the site as a place to gather sports betting advice, you will be broke by October.

Oh most definitely, but my #1 rule is I never bet on a team I'm a fan of. I wasn't seeking out advice but wanted to engage about the spread without hijacking this thread. When the line 1st came out at ND +13.5 both the public and sharps took the Buckeyes. I just fear that has more to do with the jump to +17.5 than an injury. Like was stated earlier it's almost as though Vegas is begging people to take ND and they are starting to do so. Just this weekend 74% of the money was on OSU and now it's a split on the spread money wise. Things like this shouldn't have any impact on the outcome of games but unfortunately they do.

If Jim Jones was the head coach of Ohio State all their fans would swim in the kool aid let alone drink it. Not a chance those cult members are selling their tickets.

Na, I doubt it. Gotta remember we were coming off that awful 2016 season. Georgia had high demand coming to South Bend for the first time, so season ticket holders saw a chance to recoup some of their costs by selling. It was a horrible move, especially when we ended up bouncing back that year and it turned out to be a 1 point game. I don't see the Buckeyes doing the same. While we haven't played in the Shoe in a few decades, most people are expecting this to be a decent matchup and will probably hang on to the tickets.

Agreed, and it was a Georgia fans wet dream weekend...I think the Braves played the Cubs that Fri, ND/UGA Sat and the Falcons/Bears that Sun.

I'll be fair, there were a lot of cool Georgia fans that came to South Bend for the college experience. There were a LOT of them that did their research, they were there for the Trumpets Under the Dome as I was filming it. They had a lot of cool things to say about the campus and the team.

I will say that they're the absolute trashiest fan base I've ever seen though. I've never seen so many beer bottles, cans, and trash littering the campus after an opposing team has visited. It was bad...real bad. Just smashed glass everywhere, really sad.

There are many factors at play that would/could explain the spread push:

1. OSU is returning a Heisman favorite QB,
and tons of talent.

2. ND is trotting out an unknown QB and HC

3. ND is notorious for wetting the bed when the lights are bright, and casual bettors gravitate towards their opponent in these games

4. ND had some recent injuries

IMO, the biggest one:

5. MF publicly said he was shutting down live tackling after the injuries a few weeks ago

Everyone knows if you cannot tackle in space against OSU, you are absolutely dead in the water.

With all this said, Week 1 lines are usually a joke, and wildly off

I’m gonna take point #5 as a positive. As in, we gotta reel these guys back in.

You make some good points and the fact that we’ve been a let down countless times in the past isn’t helping the narrative.

To Vegas this is easy, until proven otherwise, they can’t lose. Too much unknown commodity in ND regardless of the hype of the current roster.

the lights aren't too bright for him and played his best game in bowl game... When given the opportunity... Home state, lets introduce styles to the rest of the college football world

I also have a problem understanding why people (media) think it’s Sooo Big a moment. Like a lot of these players haven’t seen the big stage? Hell, the man himself is Suckeyes alum. Surely he knows and has set these kids up for what’s coming Saturday night.

Let’s not forget that Fuck Michigan lost big time in the playoffs but beat OSU. Let’s not forget that they also have a new DC trying to implement his system. Shit doesn’t happen overnight! It takes years to get a team fully implemented into what you want. Talent certainly can mask deficiencies but you’re not talking about one offs here. We’re bringing a lot to the table. As long as there’re no Frost moments, ND will ready for this. Yes, we have a lot of new as well. But, I believe we will be more evenly matched than what we’ve been given credit for. Shit just feels different this year, I hope I’m not wrong. Go Irish!!!

Maybe for Knowles when he first came into Oklahoma. Don't know what their defensive recruiting was like for those 4 years, but it certainly took time for them to get better. I'm not sure tOSU has that luxury, and they almost certainly have better talent to work with than the Cowboys had at first.

But for every Knowles that took time to improve a defense, there's an Elko/Lea that made their effect instantly on a team. I think it really depends on what kind of system you run and what's in the cupboard when you start.

The reasonable expectation is that ND has so much “new” in a first game that they’re going to make a lot of mistakes at a better Ohio State. 17.5 points is a lot to lay though… if I wasn’t on vacation in a place that doesn’t do sports betting I would take the points. Easy to see Ohio State winning by 21-28 but I think there are more scenarios where the game is “competitive.” Ohio State traditionally struggles to blow teams out that are tough in the trenches and we should be that again this year.

College Football Nerds published their take on ND vs. OSU, and they think we’ve been set up for failure by being ranked so high. They don’t view us as a top 10 team and see us as a good team in rebuild mode. According to them, OSU is going to abuse our secondary with their receivers and put up high 30/40. They are all in on OSU being a top 3 team. Additionally, they think Freeman has to face a very difficult schedule which is going to be a gauntlet with the available talent on ND. Thoughts?

My heart says that ND will win, my wounded ND heart (as a long time ND fan), says that we will lose by a few TDs. Call it big game PTSD.

Nobody else feels like OSU’s offense might be getting a little TOO much credit? There is no doubt Stroud, Henderson and JSN are dangerous, but if we are able to stop the run, i believe their 2nd leading WR returning from last year had like 11 catches on the season.

NDs short comings aside, I feel like OSU’s offense is being talked about like Olave and Wilson are coming back too.

I feel like if ND can protect the ball, stop the run, and roll coverage to JSN to make stroud go through his reads and force other WRs and to make plays that this will be a competitive game.
