Then quit being soft after half time. Play the 2nd and 3rd quarters like the first then you can slow down some.

How many plays did Manti take off in 2012? Not many. Harrison Smith? Bennett Jackson?

There are certain guys you just can't take off the field. I think they will be fine.

There is no way I could live on the west coast. Football season alone would be a deterrent.

College Gameday starting at 6 AM PT?

No 10:45 PM ET PAC 12 kickoff to watch/fall asleep too? No thanks.

I love it... I couldn't care less about gameday... but the day goes like this... sleep in until 8:30 or so. Get up, settled and boom first game on already. Games continue all day on into the night. It's prefect. I can't see the draw of waiting until noon for the games to start and the late slate being so late that there is no point even trying to watch....

Get Saturday errands out of the way before football starts.

Yeah the bold is certainly is fair. However, I stayed up until the end of the game in week two when Sparty was at ASU, it was a great defensive battle and I was enjoying it. It depends on what I have going on on Sunday, and how enticing the match up is for the prime time PAC 12 game.

As far as gameday is concerned, I typically put it on and make breakfast and/or get whatever I need to get done on Saturday morning, and fast forward through whatever topics I don't really care about, and then noon hits and it's on.

Kelly gets criticized for many things, but his principles on certain things are great. I think he’s tried to instill some respectable values while serving as a coach at ND. Wins and losses aside, I’ve never really thought he’s a bad person. He’s ambitious, but also realistic. I think he has trouble when he gets caught up in some of the hype. He does better when he has something to prove. Yet, he tends to keep the players centered on some important values.

Being able to have juniors return has hurt this team. if Kizer returns for his senior year, or Adams this year, the identity of the Irish would be significantly different. This is where I would criticize BK. I know money talks; especially to an institution like ND and the rugged academic schedule for a junior to leave but.......

What? Coney, Tranquil, and Tillery all came back. Nelson and Mcglinchie the year prior. This is definitely not a weak point of Bk and I'd consider it a strength.

Not really man. Sit back and really think what the Irish offense would be like right now with Adams in the backfield. Defenses would be playing much different and the posts about the offensive line may be much different as well.

I think it made great sense for Adams to leave. He wanted a shot at the pros and it arguably doesn’t get easier for running backs to have longevity. Your argument could also go both ways. Imagine the defense without Coney, Tillery, and Tranquil. Yes, the offense has lost out on some talent, but there have been gains in other areas. There were question marks all over Kizer leaving early. It would be interesting to have a non-biased assessment of Kelly’s coaching of QBs. That’s the one area that can lend to criticisms that can possibly be justified. How well does Kelly develop his QBs?

I agree to an extent. But, o-lineman usually will stay for that extra year of muscle and experience. Defensive linemen-the same. The skilled players is where I am going on this.

You make a great point brother

1: I agree this would be a better offense with Josh Adams on it, but, given his injury history and the departure of McGlinchey and Nelson, it made zero sense for him to come back. He had done all he could do at Notre Dame.

1A: I say that as someone who almost always thinks it's better for Notre Dame players to come back, rather than go to the NFL. Adams is the exception.

2: I generally agree with your broader point that losing juniors hurts, though I think it was a bigger problem in 2016, when we lost Jaylon, Fuller, even KVR had another year, if I recall. The only guys who jumped early last year were Adams (see above) and ESB (no big loss, IMO). I guess Nelson could have come back for a fifth year but that would have been ridiculous.

3: I in no way blame Kelly for guys leaving early. He generally doesn't encourage it - especially not three-and-outs who don't have a degree. He often works to essentially re-recruit them to come back for a fourth/fifth year - as Coney, Tillery and Tranquil all did. He has, at times over the years, been all but openly critical when players he didn't think were ready left early.

I think that high-profile ND players are often floated high in early mock drafts - maybe because they're better-known than most, maybe to generate clicks - and perhaps that goes to their head. I certainly think agents and others who have a "different incentive" than Notre Dame does get into kids' heads and encourage them to jump, when the reality is the NFL will still be there a year later. Also it's a national trend. The number of players leaving college eligibility on the table to go to the NFL grows every year, as does the number of players who do so and go undrafted.

But I absolutely don't think Kelly is to blame for this. If anyone knows the cost of losing quality veterans, it's him. But, like you said, money talks. (I also think growing numbers of players realize how short their career will likely be and want to get paid while they can).

BK can't control who leaves early. Sure he gives the player input and tells him how much they want them back, but in the end it's a personal decision that is being made by the player and his family. We all want BK to recruit top talent and players leaving early for the NFL is part of recruiting top talent.

I wasn't implying that Harrison Smith played for us in 2012, but he was a baller on the defensive side of the ball and rarely left the field his senior year in 2011.

Just looked awkward sandwiching him between Jackson and Manti.

People on here and guys like Sampson and the other writers are making way too much out of the reps on defense. BK had a point to say as much in his press conference.

I get that - and won't argue your point. Really all the rebuttals to my post are valid and respected.....

My argument is based on what I see on the field and how BK manages and controls (or lack thereof) a game, players and staff - is he really trying his best to 'recruit' Juniors to stay for their Senior year. I get the fact the when the NFL is calling, along with the money and, how one would fit into that year's draft that some will leave - no question.

But, I would love to either be a fly on the wall or ask question to those key players that have left early and see how hard BK tried keeping them on that one last year. I'm in no way condemning those kids that left for a NFL career or making a better future for their families - more power to them!!

One last thing somewhat towards the draft......... I do wish they would set a draft round or pick and, non-drafted players allowed back at the school like they do other sports.
