3 and 0 never felt so bad

Kinda just want to get the first loss out of the way ASAP. An undefeated team with a big opening win over a ranked Michigan squad demands a certain level of emotional investment, but this has heartbreak written all over it.

Boy do I miss Coach Devine

Boy do I miss Coach Devine

Coaching , play calling, in game management
are letting our boys down--not the opposite.

Notre Dame football talent remains solid
yet we are under performing
due to coaching

It reminds me of our late 70s and early 80 teams
with Coach Devine and Coach Faust

And Kelly has more in common with the latter
than the former

I suspect that- not unlike Coach Devine -
there is a disconnect or worse
between Kelly and the players.

Yet Kelly has not approached Devine's success

Take a look at Coach Devine's last season
and a change was made from that level

This program will not go higher
without a coaching change

It startles me to see how well
we continue to recruit

Tradition-- that great --can be
lived off for a long time

A change is risky of course--
with Faust we went quickly to
2-0 and then it was over by 2-4

So the AD's call here is not easy

The sum of the parts are greater than the
whole under Kelly

Holtz, Devine , Ara, Leahy, Rockne
The whole was greater than the
sum of the parts

Where have you gone Coach Devine ?

I don't even know what to say, a win is a win I guess, and it's all nonsense until Stanford anyways. As long as we're 4-0 heading into that one, I'm good I guess. Looked solid in the first half, hopefully they can build on that, and learn from whatever the hell you call that 2nd half. Overall, I thought Wimbush looked better, especially in not taking sacks and recognizing pressure and realizing there was nothing downfield and taking off. His rushing ability is really the only good thing about the kid honestly. I'd definitely like to see more Book mixed in, just to mix it up and break up the monotony that is Brandon Wimbush. He looks really solid on those bootlegs, although that is a ridiculously small sample size.

And Tirico tells Flutie to give him Newsome some love. Gotta think that was him calling Flutie out for never saying anything positive about ND.

I feel like part of his job is to piss us off, aside from being captain obvious 95% of the time. Hotels.com should probably include him in the commercials. He just brings nothing more to the table then what Turico is already saying. In a perfect world, Tony Romo would be commenting the games. Tony wasn't the best QB, but boy can he comment a football game!

Why does Tony Jones Jr not get 20 carries a game. Just pound the big boy!

Very true. Spent an hour on the phone with a buddy from Indy talking a lot about this topic. At this point, I'm ready to see what we could look like with Book taking over. I get that BW has an incredible dynamic (his legs), but teams are doing the same thing they did to us late last year. It's not going to get easier for a BW led offense. I think Book is a more mobile Rees (his HS running stats are pretty good), and can be very effective with the right play calling. Our D is doing enough to make him successful.

Game balls

Game balls

Defensive secondary--ball skills, coverage, tackling much improved over the
previous years

( granted DL pressure is helping quite a bit)

Special teams--Newsome/Koon/ coverage good games

Coaching, QB play, amd offense in general are all terrible. Defense can only carry the team for so long. Frustrating that when BK leaves next regime may be worse but its clear what this program is. Playoffs much less championship is a pipe dream. Should have rebooted after 2016.

Man, I'm pro-BW for sure, but even I'm to the point of moving onto Book. At least feature him more to see what you would be getting. From the very small sample size he has been featured, he's definitely looked solid. What worries me is that you do lose that dynamic (his mobility) that you mentioned. Also, do we have the receiving prowess to make featuring Book worthwhile?

It seems like we’ve been down the “get the backup in” road before. BK shows that he’s loyal to a fault. He hung on to Rees too long, a lot of people thought Zaire was given too much consideration against Kizer..... Then you look at other positions (MLB, RB, etc) and it just seems like he can’t pull the trigger. I just believe with a B minus level passer, we would be difficult to deal with (particularly when looking at Book’s good athleticism). I get that BW is dynamic as a runner, but he’s a lot closer to Carlyle Holliday than he is Clausen or Kizer

The sky fell today. No clouds which means sunshine = boo. Notre Dame sucks. Winning sucks. I’m angry at Brian Kelly. Wimbush should apologize. Swarbrick is a politician. The gold on the helmet doesn’t have enough gold. Blah blah.

3-0. Go Irish!

The redzone offense is atrocious. there were a lot of points left on the field.

There is something weird going on with Chip Long. Because we know exactly what makes this offense work, but choose not to do it sometimes. This offense can be good, we just choose not to call an entire game suited towards that. It’s incredibly bizarre.

I was, wrongfully, more optimistic about our WR’s but this group is not good.

I thought Wimbush played a decent game considering how it was called. He got very little help from his WR’s. Stanford is scoring a lot of their points on 50/50 balls to WR/TE’s. Their group just makes the plays. Not our group.

Run game much improved. Shocker, thats what happens when you run the QB.

The non holding calls is a VERY serious issue. It’s completely changing the game for our defense. We’d be off the field for so many of those plays if they were called the last two weeks. The hold on Okwara is such a terrible call that something needs to be done. Kareem got taken out of a couple plays, again, today because of it.

At home we have the opposing coach “working” the officials with the game on the line. I don’t think that should factor in to home field advantage, necessarily, but it’s working against us. This is gross.

I thought the OL was better today. One issue that is apparent though. Kraemer is not very good at pulling. Jamie at ISD brought this up in the spring because we do it so much and he wasn’t sure Kraemer would be able to execute it. This offense loves to pull the guards and Bars at RG last year was good at it. Kraemer not so much. And, the problem is, it’s not sustaining blocks, it’s not making blocks at all. Sometimes way too slow to get there. On one he just fell down in front of the DL, lol.

Yoon can’t miss that kick. Game would feel a little different at the end had he made a remedial kick. JD, improves his kickoffs as the game went on, that was good to see.

Any stats on Irish offense redzone efficiency?

There not up yet. I just went through the drive charts quickly.

ND was 4 for 5, 2 TDs, 2 FGs, 1 missed FG from the 14 Yd Line

Yoon's 49 yarder was from outside the red zone, 29 yd line.

VU 2 for 2, 2 TDs

There fumble at the goal line started at the 21 yd line.

There FGs were outside Red Zone, 21 and 26 yd lines.

1. We're playing not to lose

2. Our defense looks incredible

3. Our receivers dropped way too many balls

4. Our play calling is so strange. Use a scheme to get to the redzone then abandon it completely

5. TJ Jr ran really hard and earned difficult yards

6. We are not a top 10 as of yet

7. Our 2nd half needs to be entirely remodeled. We are scoring fewer points and giving up more. Are the opposing coaches that much better at 2nd half adjustments? Or are our guys getting gassed? Something has to be done because we've squandered sizable leads 3/3 games in the 2nd half.

This team will be either 10-2 or 9-3 I don’t see us beating Stanford or virgina tech. USC is a toss up game, Florida State looks pathetic and they’ll want nothing to do with coming to South Bend in November. I don’t see this team beating Stanford or virgina tech without having a respectable passing game. You got WR’s that drop balls and a QB who isn’t accurate what so ever throwing the deep ball. I’d like to see more of Michael young, branden Lenzie, austin, and some of the other freshman. Im wondering what happens next year at QB. Does Wimbush leave, does book transfer? Does phil become number 1?

The biggest issue I’ve noticed is that we just don’t make adjustments at halftime. Perhaps the last two games are a reflection of just not wanting to show Stanford anything. I might be delusional, however I’m hoping that’s the case.

Im glad I’m not the only one thinking the same exact thing. Holtz used to do that.
