Boise State, Oregon, LSU, Georgia. Two of those teams are going to lose tonight. OMFG is there season over. Blame Brian Kelly for what? The missed Field goal, the dropped passes, the fumble? Last time i checked the guy has won every where he has been. 5 turnovers i dont care if you play my local community college your not going to win. If your all going to sit here and cry than go find another team to root for. Ya i am pissed we are pissed but calling Michael Floyd over rated and Theo Riddick shouldn't play next week? Brian Kelly should be fired? Who we going to hire? Urban Meyer isn't coming. Everybody go to bed this is worse than the one night me and you know who got into it. We are all pissed but your posting on a message board. Your not out there calling plays and doing all that so shut the front door. Be proud of are football team if it we cleaned up and didnt make turnovers we blow South Floridas doors off. Give me a break to these clowns that came out of there holes. We can go 0-12 and i will still love Notre Dame.

There were SO many plays that if the ball bounced differently, we'd atleast be in overtime.

Make that field goal, we'd be in OT.

Didn't have that ball pop off of TJ, we'd win the game.

Didn't fumble on the 1 yard line, we win.

Just bad luck.

The one decent thing about this is the team should be pissed. Time to take it out on Michigan at Michigan. :D

Don't forget that Crist threw that INT AFTER a penalty (Holding by Floyd). The play after that holding call Crist did a great job of escaping pressure and running for a 1st down. As people said, we just made a few bad plays and the ball bounced the wrong way.

I'm not implying Riddick should (or shouldn't) have been benched, but is anyone else super surprised we didn't see Toma at any point tonight?

I wasn't calling you a baby. Just trying to make lite of the situation.

Sheesh.

you said grab a blankey... or whatever... but if that wasn't your intention then cool... forget it...

my point was this is a systematic problem that has obviously not resolved itself... it happens and if you played this game you know, some programs just lose... regardless....

and right now... this program looks for ways to lose.... I really don't think that is debatable given the last four years...

I was suprised we didn't see him as well. Thought he could have added a spark with his tenacious play.

I agree that the turnover was devastating. We shouldn't give up on the kid because of it. I'm sure he feels bad enough. I'd like to see him bounce back and help us win some games.

Agreed. I'm not calling for his schollie or anything, just stating my opinion that I think that could very well have set the tone for what turned out to be one of the sloppiest games ND has played in YEARS.

I was suprised we didn't see him as well. Thought he could have added a spark with his tenacious play.

Definitely could have used him when everyone and their mother was dropping passes.

Crist really let me down. I feel like he gives up on himself and when he does that so does the rest of the team.

Just got steamrolled by mental errors tonight.
Get back to the practice field and fix them.
We'll be alright.
Any time your defense gives up 1 touchdown and holds them to field goals the rest of the game they did something right plus holds them to under 300 yds.
We just can't expect the D to bail us out every game.

This is the difference between ND's schedule and other programs. All the big time programs play "tuneup" games, where you can make mistakes and over come them. S. Florida is a pretty solid first opponent.

For real Jerry. Only Oregon/LSU and Boise State/Georgia from within the Top 25 are harder games than So. Fla for any top 25 opponent. And the only reason these are taking place is because (a) the visitors want to entice recruits in Dallas and Atlanta, respectively, and (b) when they were scheduling these games all 4 had a major chip on their shoulder and had something to prove. As compared to Auburn, I bet Oregon would choose Utah State in a heartbeat right now...

To add to your point re: first-game tune-ups/"Hiccups", good examples happened right in front of us this weekend:

The Golden Gophers were within 2 with the ball at midfield about to take the lead against at USC until their QB threw a dumb pick.

Furthermore, today Utah State was up by 10 with 2 1/2 minutes to play against the team that won the national championship last year, with such national champion needing an onside kick with under a minute to play to beat Utah State at home.

We all saw UK stumble hard (literally) and score no offensive touchdowns in 3 quarters and basically get beaten by the perrennial doormat of the Sun Belt, WKU.

And, lest we forget that whole 38-34 thumping at Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2007, by Appalachian State. In this first-game-of-the-season they won based on first-game Hiccups; and this was against a team that defeated ND 38-0 and had 8/11 defensive starters alone signed by NFL teams, including the entire front 4, not to mention the #1 pick in the draft, the all-time UM leading passer (a QB who still starts in the NFL), the UM all-time leading rusher (an HB drafted somewhere in either the 3rd or 5th rounds (I believe) and the All Big Ten Preseason Offensive POY), and two receivers still playing in the NFL. (In fact, when you think about it, based purely on NFL talent, this team could be ranked in the Top 5 of all time Big-10 teams...).

We need to wake up to the fact scheduling cupcakes the first game of the year is how all major BCS programs play the margin of error game; history consistently shows that in the first game of the year you have the highest chance of playing least like yourself, excecution-wise, and making mental errors and Hiccups.

Take today, for example: obviously, take away a few dumb plays (e.g., Harrison Smith's poor-man's Zbikowski impressions) and not only are we winning but I see us running the ball and dominating, the way we did on the first drive. Take away a single strip on that first drive due to Wood's first-game jitters and conditioning (the reason he was taken out, which I don't thin would happen later in the year) and we walk away handily.

But the main point here is that had we been playing Charleston Southern we would still be winning even if we made all the same mistakes. And, I guarantee you neither Auburn nor USC will drop out of the Top 25, because even the voting media knows that the first game of the season is really just a glorified-scrimmage and seeing what you need to work on.

Not to mention, wouldn't it be nice if we learned about the skill of the backups (e.g., Rees) because of a blow-out? Aren't there like 3 or 4 "OR"s on the depth chart? Imagine seeing all the #2's playing and getting to evaluate who will step-up game-time...We could end up finding some diamonds in that rough. But you just can't waste halves against quality opponents determining whether your starting QB has what it takes. By then you've already lost.

Take away lesson: schedule South Floridas later in the year, and play a Troy/WKU/Charleston Southern/Utah State/Akron/Western Michigan/Minnesota/FAU for the first game instead.

Just Schedule Them Swarbrick!!! 10 wins and we're automatically into the BCS -- let's give ourselves a chance to get them!

[tl;dr]

I was a crist supporter but if he had half the football mind tommy does he would be one hell of a Qb but he isn't. I can say iwouldn't be upset if Tommy/Golston worked together the reat of the year.

Just don't see the point in wasting a year of eligibility on a kid with a similar skill set as Hendrix

I agree and I personally have my hopes hit by the fact that we are adding to the schedule rather than taking away from this front loaded BS... not blaming this on the schedule, but I am saying Bama had many TO's today too and still won big b/c of who they played....

we need to stop front loading this schedule... it is one of many thing that have added to this programs down fall

This loss really sucks the air out of the room. There just aren't any excuses. Our QB situation is tough. Rees looked better but he's got to move the ball around beyond Floyd and Eifert.

I'm tired of hype. It's time to shut up and prove it all on the field.

Congrats to South Florida.
