If Denbrock is calling the plays, someone needs to introduce him to the TEs.... lol

I forgot where i read it but it was a paid site so either rivals/247 but they indicated that it was denbrock doing the play calling w/ BK having final say...so this isn't sanford's doing...plus following the texas game, robertson said he loved how denbrock called the game and they showed him how they would use him which is what he liked

This was my inclination with Denbrock being the one calling the shots even though all three are collaborating. Denbrock was getting an ear full at one point during the game at UVA from Kelly. Kelly may get final say but does Kelly really have time to switch plays up in the middle of a game? I doubt it, and I think some of the play calls were NOT the ones Kelly had in mind.

The defense will have to stay focused, man the lanes, and BVG HAS to keep the urge not to blitz against this GT offense!!!

Exactly. Just install a system and keep them disciplined. I'm confident they can contain the run this week. They have experience all over the field and have played disciplined in their first two games.

Just scrap this blitz this week unless it's third and ten or more. And even then, I would rarely send someone. The Tech line isn't as effective pass blocking as they are run blocking and we should be able to generate pressure with four in clear passing situations.

My two concerns are the level of play from the nose tackle and causing turnovers. Cage has played well so far. He needs to avoid making mistakes when he gets fatigued. Tillery just needs to play smart. We haven't caused many turnovers this year. That has to change against Tech. We need some ball hawks out there and we need to knock the piss out of that QB whenever we get a shot. He'll put it on the ground if we do.

It seems like its just a cluster f**k when it comes to calling plays. I actually wish Sanford was calling the plays.

Can't quote the Colin post -

What was Colin's take? Wondering if his new show gives him a different perspective. He's always been Anti-ND, and he's the only ESPN personality I really think that's true for. Loves every other big program but ND, not sure why.

Because he is a USC fan.

More I think about the game, this is my feeling - Our defense feels a burden and sense of urgency. Let's be honest, GT is not a 'sexy' top 15 team. So while they'd naturally be up for playing a ranked team, it's not the same as the Clemson game, even though they're ranked pretty closely. The burden comes from the sadness of Malik and his emotions. Elliot also feels the pressure, as well as BVG wanting to stick it too Paul Johnson (which obviously goes both ways, but it's kool aid Wednesday, so...), and how poorly they played last week. So basically the defense playes beyond their potential, and Kizer is OK - good enough, not great. The defense cannot keep this sense of urgency every game, and Kizer will slowly improve but having him now the starter will end up costing us in a game or 2 where the defense no longer feels the weight/burden and we have to have Kizer win us a game. So I think we're OK the next 3 games because 1) Defense will carry the burden this week. 2) Massachussete's isn't beating us. And 3) We'll all be up for Clemson.

I think Schmidt is playing bad, but missing Jarron Jones in the middle is to create space might be hurting him more than we realize. Jones is prone to take a play off from time to time, but when it's go time, he's been more impressive than any DL since Tuitt/Nix, IMO.

Do you think Alize Jones gets a significant number of targets in the passing game or will it be another TE like Weishar?

Our TEs haven't gotten a significant number of targets in any game yet, so I'm going to go with "no" for now. We're definitely leaning more on WRs at this point, but I don't know if that's due to preference by the QBs, or a deficiency in coaching by Booker.

Watched the Kelly presser from yesterday. I always try to cue in on Kelly's demeanor, tone, pace etc...

Kelly seemed very different from the first two weeks. Texas and Virginia he was very calm very confident basically no emotion.

Yesterday he had a nervous energy about him. I feel he took it off autopilot. I hope he got the creative juices flowing and gets this team emotional this week.

We need our D to get a turnover, we need a big sack at a crucial moment we need a few of the players on D to step up and make a play (KVR, Romeo, Schmidt)

Our O Line must control the game or nothing else matters. If we can impose our will and control the clock we can keep points down.

I am excited to see Deshone and Branden play Saturday, but I still get a sick feeling knowing Malik is out for the year.

Perfect - I couldn't agree more. If the pundits believe GT's triple-option was that monstrous and scary, they would have put them in the top 5.

His emotions really get to me. I love CFB and hardly watch NFL because of the emotional difference in the fans, coaches, and players. If I could, I'd walk into a doctor's office and allow them to snap my ankle in place of Malik's. That kid is everything that is rare but right about college football. No one deserves to be on the field more than him.

I am more curious to see if Alize lays a block or two down this game. Most unimpressive performance relative to hype I have seen in quite some time.

We should be able to line up and pound these guys offensively. We spend so much time fretting over their offense but their D leaves a lot to be desired.

Are we better off spreading the field or loading up TEs? I haven't been impressed with the TE blocking by and large. At this point I would rather have Brown and Robinson blocking outside than Alize blocking inside (or anywhere for that matter), and it isn't even close.

I haven't even noticed him out there which could be good/bad as a blocker - is he struggling blocking? My assumption was that he's not getting very much time. Coaches have to put the ball in his hands. He's a monster that CBs do not want to tackle.

It was tough not to feel bad for the kid. Football is a cruel game.

I cannot fathom what will be going through that kid's mind having to watch from the sidelines not being able to play due to how passionate he is for the game, the Irish, and his teammates. .....

Any chance we see Rochell play on the interior a bunch this week? I know penetrating with the DTs seems to be one thing that kills a triple option attack, and I think Day/Rochell could do some serious damage together.

Of course our lack of DE depth might make that impossible, but I hope it's something the coaches consider.

this is the stuff that gets me....i don't believe it to be odd...i feel a lot of times, the plays are too scripted w/ personnel which we have discussed at length but also specific targets...this just kind of puts perspective on things imo...its easy to game plan when you show tendencies

Yep, you nailed it. Malik is a passionate competitor, he simply wants to be great. Can't wait to have him back. Let's hope his surgery was perfect, his rehab is ahead of schedule and he comes out in spring with even more passion (if that's possible).

That's interesting. I wonder if it's one of those things where Brown has trouble keeping his head in the game a bit so they try and target him early in drives to keep him locked in for the whole possession.

Really love the "burn the boat" mantra. After watching the Showtime series, I have hope that these guys can rally and make a miracle run. Seems like a ton of unity in that locker room and they still have the starting talent to win any game on the schedule.

Asking a true freshman TE to come in and learn correct blocking assignments is tough. I am sure as his knowledge progresses his skill set will increase as well. He has the physical skills necessary... just needs to get the mental side down. I have confidence that he will as the season moves forward. Reminds me of OJ Howard a lot and it has taken OJ two years plus to figure blocking out.

the thing about Alize is that he is probably only in the game for certain packages. I doubt he is working with the whole playbook and if the opponent's weaknesses aren't exposed by said packages then its unlikely he will be utilized

I was saying all game, if Virginia just shuts down Brown and Fuller, we're toast. It was so clear that we only went to those two for majority of the game. I get it and obviously it's easier said than done to shut those guys down but we are way too easy to read. We need to add the TE more and pass to the RB more. Obviously what we did worked but I am not convinced that it will work all year.
