I would love to play high stake poker with Brian Kelly!
I would love to play high stake poker with Brian Kelly!
Some people are close to the vest, cool to the bone players. And some people are lousy at concealing anything. Both of these groups exclude Brian Kelly.
Coach is of a third type, a whole different constitution entirely. Coach Kelly doesn't think he has any tells. Does he practice in front of the mirror? Not necessarily. But he is pretty transparent for not trying to say or give anything up!
His enthusiasm coming into the season was as clear as it was in this week's media exposures that his team for the first time since he was coach did nothing wrong. Or should I say was approaching the game exactly as he preferred.
He was lightheartedly kidding about Josh Adams' freshmanitus;
He was straight forward about the two freshman running back's progress;
He talked about Malik with an affinity and respect I have not seen him bestow upon a quarterback since he has been at Notre Dame;
He was pretty uncharacteristically complementary about the progress of every player mentioned, especially even Peter Mokwuah, with whom he gave a positive review without any reservation, humorous or otherwise; and,
His answer about Ronnie Stanley and the captaincy was particularly telling in that he said he wasn't going to disclose anything, and then he told everything important.
I haven't seen a coach show support of a player better ever. I believe Kelly would bleed a lot for this team! And like his reaction in his support of Stanley, that is becoming the norm for this team. Which is an incredible dynamic, and the greatest tell of all.
Speaking of Stanley, I think that the captaincy issue for Stanley was a matter of true leadership and maturity on his part. I do have twinges of exasperation with those that try to manufacture it being because of a shortcoming on the part of Ronnie. I will always hold the honor of Kelly's response attesting to the character of Ronnie Stanley, after he said he was not going to disclose anything . . .
