More than 30 feared dead in Kramatorsk railway station strike
By NBC News
At least 39 people were killed after two rockets hit a railway station in Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region as thousands were trying to evacuate the area, Ukrainian officials said Friday.
"This is an evil that has no limits. And if it is not punished, it will never stop," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said following the attack, which Donetsk’s governor said had also left at least 87 injured. NBC News was unable to independently verify the strikes or the reported death toll and injuries.
On Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied that there were any "combat missions" in Kramatorsk. Moscow has consistently denied targeting civilians in its attacks on Russia.
On Thursday, the United States and European Union moved to ramp up pressure on Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine. Congress voted to suspend normal trade relations with Russia and to ban imports of the country's oil and gas into the U.S., while the E.U. approved new sanctions, including a ban on Russian coal, with further measures anticipated.
The efforts come as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen prepares to meet with Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Friday.
