Exactly. First he tried the "we are liberating them from Nazi's" approach but that failed because Zelensky and others were able to get on TV and show quite clearly that they are NOT Nazi's. Then they tried to say that Ukraine was building a dirty bomb. That also failed, because they couldn't produce any evidence. They also tried "NATO made us do it" and a bunch of other stuff.

They never thought to go the "biolabs" route -- because it's ridiculous to anyone with a brain and trafficking in facts -- until some QAnon dude got it trending in a small group of fringe idiots. Then Russia seized on it (as did China and anyone else looking for an angle to justify support of Russia).

This angle works because: 1) COVID (and therefor any talk of "pathogens" or "lab leaks") is a politicized and divisive topic that people have strong opinions on 2) international science and research is a complex topic whereas "they're Nazis" is not 3) because they got certain people to give it credibility by talking about it on programs people trust.

It is what it is. I think this thread has been really interesting because there are a lot of people with different opinions and no "right" answer. That makes for good discussion. But regardless of different opinions and discussion on what the US should do, it's been very clear that the entire world has basically been united in agreement of the fact that Russia is the bad guy; the aggressor; committing war crimes; and unjustified in their attack on Ukraine. What Russia is going to do here is try to divide people on the idea of "bioweapons" and other spooky buzzwords to cause enough confusion that they can retro-justify what they've done. They are 100% guaranteed to take control of one of these "biolabs" at some point and fabricate what they found or what Ukraine // NATO was nefariously plotting. And when that happens, keep your eyes on who parrots talking points from the Kremlin and who doesn't.

Even if true - why would Russians want to release a Covid2.0 superbug? It would spread on their own people as hard and fast as any? However the main reason I knew it was bogus was the war hawks didn't latch on. That bi-partisan ruling class hell bent on going to war could have jumped on board and dusted off the WMD playbook pretty easily.

Tulsi can be wrong on bioBS and also right in calling Romney a neocon turd.

I am equally intrigued and concerned by the dynamic of global finance and trade alienating a major country. Seems horribly effective especially as time is applied, maybe too effective.

"Keystone is why we have high gas prices. I have no clue on how economics work"

I've come to the conclusion that at least a dozen people I know believe there is a lever in the White House that controls gas prices. Up or down, whoever pulls the lever decides.

Uh-OH

Russia’s market-rate GDP in 2021 was US$1.65 trillion, enough to make it the world’s 11th largest economy, behind South Korea. If we crudely convert Russia’s 2021 estimated GDP by March 7, 2022, currency rates, rather than the average exchange rate used last year, and place it against the 2021 market-rate GDP table, the rankings change and Russia slides to 22nd place, falling between Taiwan and Poland.

This drop is likely an underestimate. While a falling ruble lowers Russia’s exchange rate of its GDP to U. S. dollars, its weakening economy lowers its ruble GDP directly. And Russia’s isolation will erode its economic competitiveness, widening the economic gap further in the medium term.

Ukrainians confronted with the oncoming Russian army were wise to Putin’s chimeric strategy. “Don’t you have problems in your country to solve? Are you all rich there, as in the Emirates?” one elderly man heckled Russian soldiers.

Putin’s next move

Robert F. Kennedy famously observed that GDP failed to account for many things that we care about — like health and education. The fall in Russia’s market-rate GDP cannot begin to describe the human tragedy playing out in both Ukraine and Russia.

But what these figures do make clear is that Putin’s claim to legitimacy through economic performance is all but destroyed. With “great power status” tied closely to economic power, Putin’s back-door source of legitimacy from stirring up nationalist pride now seems closed as well.

"between Taiwan and Poland" Dupa Jasz, Vladimir!

I've come to the conclusion that at least a dozen people I know believe shutting down pipelines, prohibiting drilling, appointing nominees who want to bankrupt the oil and gas industry, utilizing FERC to roadblock midstream transportation, and printing trillions of dollars have no impact on gas prices.

They're not going to release anything. They're going to claim that they found BIOWEAPONS and that everyone should thank them for invading Ukraine and saving the world from what Ukraine was planning to do.

Brent Crude is a helluva good guy. He'd never poison a friend, shoot him and then throw him in the river hoping he drowns.
Dude, really, are you aware of what happens if we merely call you by the last five letters
of your name?

Again, Kudos for your turn in the recent Kingsman movie. Nice footwork......

Is the lever in the Oval itself or do they have it in one of the other rooms?

First looked at who is on the list, then thought about who isn't.

Obviously for show. Nobody plans on going there any time soon. I assume not, anyway.

As I said a while ago. This was cooking on 4Chan over a week before it hit regular social media and the news media.

It was right there in the darkest corners of the internet where all the other bullshit starts.

The only difference was there was a COVID component about the original on 4chan, but I guess they thought it was implied and best left unsaid.

Its really getting old that people still fall for this shit and then complain about the "lame stream media"

Poland was fighting for their lives. Germany had plans to basically send all the Slavs to Siberia. Ditto on the Russians.

Russia has no intention of liquidating what they perceive as their own people.
They didn’t perceive them as their own people in the Holodomor. I have little confidence that they will be tolerant of ethnic Ukrainians who believe in their nationhood.

Yeah... because I'm American? I don't give a shit about Ukraine because I'm not from there, and really have no desire to go there. It's the poorest country in Europe. It's basically North Dakota if we didn't have money. It has no geographic beauty. No famous sites to see. They abort over half their pregnancies. Hell, until a couple weeks ago the world had apparently been mispronouncing the only city of theirs any of us had heard of.

"If you lived in Ukraine" lol chances are I wouldn't have been born. Likely would have been aborted. They aren't some noble people deserving our love and support. They are just another shitty group of people like Russians.
As someone who worked in Ukraine, this is a load of horse shit. Let’s justify our apathy towards an atrocity by mocking their abortion rate which in itself is another atrocity. Just gross commentary.

And what the hell are you talking about "they abort half their pregnancies"?

Are you having a stroke?

Dirtball stuff there north Dakota.

Get a grip on yourself

EDIT: A quick bit of research shows our resident genius North Dakota saw abortion rates per 1000. Russia has 50~ per 1000 and Ukraine has 27~ per thousand.

For context. The US has 20~ per thousand.

Very interesting to see the media (and therefore citizen) obsession with Ukraine when this has been going on for almost a decade. I'm sure there are no perverse reasons attributing to the focus.
