Yeah, size and weight isn't completely irrelevant, but it's pretty darn close if one person is an elite, trained fighter and the other is completely unskilled.

There is literally a famous video from the 90s of a 2nd degree jiu-jitsu black belt who weighs 150 pounds taking on a ripped 250 pound guy in a "no rules"* fight and he wins convincingly. The jiu-jitsu fighter is not a Ronda Rousey level talent either... but he understands striking, and then when the larger guy takes him down (something he's virtually powerless to stop with his small stature) he uses superior technique to out-maneuver him on the ground and dominate him.

*There were some rules, such as no eye gouging or biting.

Royce Gracie represent! Early UFC was the best. Inspired me to train for a few years in Brazilian jiu-jitsu during high school.

Any MMA fighter worth his (or her) salt these days has to have a solid ground game. With Rousey's knowledge of grappling and submission techniques, she could probably best a much larger and stronger opponent (provided he was untrained). But if the dude has even the most basic knowledge of how to defend against those techniques, Rousey would be toast.

First comment on a totally unrelated topic. I asked a friend with significant MMA experience about this. He's won a few tournaments, trained with UFC fighters, and even done some grappling with Roxanne Modafferi, a UFC pro, and woman. He's about 6'3", 195 when he's cut.

My questions:
1. Do you think you could take RR?
2. If so, what round/how hard would it be?

His long, not-to-form answer:

"Ok against Ronda I have really one thing going for me, I am bigger, stronger and more powerful than her. However I used to get balled up by a guy named Mike Joy who walks around between 160-170lbs. I was bigger stronger and more powerfull than him but his skill technique and experience prevailed. granted this guy went toe to toe with Chad Mendes and lost in a decision (Extremely impressive, Chad mendes would undeniably destroy Ronda Rousey). So in that regard thing Rousey still has the upper hand despite the size and strength differential. On a differnet not I do have a tiny bit of experience grappling with elite female mixed martial artist (Roxanne Modafferi) Despite her fighting in the UFC and widely regarded as a very good woman Pro i pretty much man handled her...Now again RR is on a whole different level than any woman in the world as it stands.....with all that being said let me answer your questions
...
1.) Even if I had a proper camp and clearly no weight requirement I still think I would lose to Ronda. (5/10 confidence in that answer)
2.) 3rd round VIA Armbar from her guard (2/10 Confidence)
sooo much speculation, but allow me to spar one round of grappling and one round of striking with her and I could bring the confidence in the answers up to 9 or 10

me:
would you think a "street fight" element makes it better or worse for Ronda? no weapons, obviously, but pretty much no other rules?

him again:
im well above average in at least size so chances are more likely than not that the person i train with is smaller
...
I hate getting into the street fight aspect of it...there are different types of street fights too....like the world star hip hop ones where are trying to take each others heads off....or an actaul life or death scenario where you are utilizing groin shots, eye gouges, biting, scratching

me:
eh, i think they were talking about posturing outside a bar with people to break you up if shit got too real

him:
The "street fights" they are probably refering to are the ones where someone gets sucker punched or they square off and the first haymaker to land wins...in which case ill still take RR against some large man with no training

Go Irish. Excited for 2015!

Kind of tough to follow that post.

1. Roxanne Modafferi is not in the UFC, and has lost 7 of her last 9.
2. Ronda would get seriously hurt by 90% of high level MMA men.
3. She has great Judo but its different when you're fighting a man with good striking who can dominate you in the clinch and avoid the takedown.
4. She was extremely close to getting submitted by a fellow female who is 2-3 in the UFC (Liz Caramouche)

The Ronda can beat ____ is getting very silly. Just take her for what she is, the most impressive/accomplished fighter in Women's MMA.

Doesn't she herself just dismiss the "she can beat X male" generally speaking?

Might as well just link the AMA on reddit since the answers there are going to generate headlines. Her answer on Cyborg was pretty good.

Do you sometimes wish your fights would last a little longer than just a few seconds?

No because the shorter my fights are, the more fights I can have. I only have a finite amount of fight time, and I'd like to fight as long as possible.

I was about to say that. Against the best of the division, no chance but I haven't seen some of those bottom fighters on that list fight before, so hard for me to say definitively against those guys.

BTW, I've been extremely impressed with Dillashaw lately. Guy is a stud and I can't wait to see him fight Cruz. There has been so much talk about him copying Cruz's style that I could see this fight having some nice build up.

Another company move. Holm has good hands (Boxing Champ), but hasnt looked impressive in any of her wins. This will be another early submission as the hype train continues.

Didn't Rhonda say that she could take Floyd?

Ronda Rousey Says She Could Beat Floyd Mayweather in MMA Fight

By Jordy McElroy , Featured Columnist Mar 5, 2014

To MMA enthusiasts, there’s no doubt Floyd Mayweather would get dumped on his head by any of the male UFC champions. But what would happen if the greatest boxer in the world stepped into the cage with Ronda Rousey?

The UFC women’s bantamweight champ is the alpha female in a sport that encompasses much more than a punching contest. Kicks, knees, takedowns and submissions—these are all aspects of fighting in MMA in which Mayweather hasn’t trained.

This would explain why Rousey, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo, nonchalantly told Power 106 FM that she could beat Mayweather in an MMA fight:

I wouldn’t even stand up, I wouldn’t even be anywhere near him. I would just do like a little army crawl over there, and he would have to run away. I would just be skittering after him like the one dude in Bloodsport that was doing the whole monkey crawl fight system. I would do that. I would just bear crawl over there too low for him to hit me, and I’d tackle him down.... I spent a lot of time [on the ground], and I doubt that he does.

Rousey has managed to toss around grown men much larger than Mayweather in the past. Who could ever forget the beautiful throw she hit on middleweight Uriah Hall during a training session on Season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter?

Ultimate Fighter: Uriah vs. Ronda

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/glCAiJpfAFE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The “monkey crawl” would be one way for Rousey to avoid Mayweather’s speed and power. She would have to adopt a stealthier approach than just walking down her opponent and forcing the clinch against the cage.

Theoretically, if Rousey could find a way past Mayweather’s boxing, the odds would tip in her favor.

Of course, a serious debate will probably spurn from Rousey’s lighthearted notion that she could actually defeat Mayweather in a fight, which is unfortunate. Her comments from the interview didn’t come across as a serious challenge to the undefeated boxing legend.

If anything, it was just a playfully honest answer to an amusing question.

The point most of us are trying to make is that she totally dominates her competition, which in her sport happens to be women weighing approximately 135 pounds. No one is saying she could beat a man in the heavy-weight division or that she could beat Muhammad Ali in his prime. Of course, there are others bigger and stronger, but they have not been able to dominate their competition in the same fashion she has done. Mike Tyson, in his prime, had the same ability to end a fight almost before it started, but we all know what happened to him. Rousey, if she continues to fight, will eventually experience an erosion of her skills and her passion. But at this time, she is totally dominant.

I get all of that. My point was simply that it is easier to dominate in the women's ranks than in the men's.

I see Ronda Rousey is using the Manny Pacquiao school of marketing, latching her name onto Mayweather. I don't knock her for doing it, very smart business move. I didn't even know who she was until she started bashing Mayweather.

Also the Donald Trump school of marketing, i.e. showing up everywhere and never shutting up.

Totally forgot about this movie. I've been playing Payday 2 on PS4 lately and I knew it reminded me of a movie in the early 90s. The game feels like the closest thing to a Point Break game adaptation...without the surfing.

So is Wooly going to fight Rousey since he clearly stated numerous times that he could beat her in MMA AND in a street fight?

Then you're just generally uniformed. Like, "have you been living under a rock" uniformed. She's been making a ruckus for quite some time now and is the real deal.

Her Mayweather quotes wouldn't be page one if she hadn't fought to be so noteworthy.

Your comment reminded me of Rick Reiley calling Notre Dame irrelevant. Had to do a double take.
