Former world chess champion Boris Spassky, best known for his famous match against Fischer in '72, has passed away at the age of 88. Spassky was an extraordinary player, but his greatness was, unfortunately, overshadowed by Fischer. Someone said of Spassky, "He was one of the best ever. He just had the misfortune of being mayor of Tokyo when Godzilla strode ashore."
In the days before their match and after the 2nd game, Fischer gave Spassky every reason to say, "Enough of this nonsense!" and go home with his title. Hardly anyone would have blamed him. The Soviets even ordered him to do so, but he refused.
In later years, he and Fischer became extremely close. Boris was instrumental in getting the mentally ill Fischer released from a Japanese prison and convincing Iceland to take him in and grant him citizenship. Spassky was universally liked, respected, and considered the consummate gentleman and sportsman in the chess world.
