Oak Ridge football coach Ricky Watters is on indefinite leave with pay, pending an investigation by Orange County Public Schools, OCPS spokeswoman Kathy Marsh said Monday.

Marsh said the investigation began Friday,
when Oak Ridge played at Wekiva. Watters, a former Super Bowl champion and NFL All-Pro, was not on the sideline for that game, a 41-6 victory for the Pioneers (2-2).

Defensive coordinator Travis Gabriel coached Oak Ridge in that game and has been appointed the Pioneers’ interim coach.

Gabriel, who is also the administrative dean for 11th- and 12th-grade students at Oak Ridge, said Watters’ situation will have no bearing on players on the field.

“It doesn’t matter the who, what, where, when, why,’’ said Gabriel, who previously had been an assistant at Freedom. “We’re just coaching, trying to win. That’s it.

“As long as the kids are focused, nothing should distract them. Their focus is just playing and winning.”

Per county policy, Marsh refused to disclose specifics of a pending investigation. She gave no timetable for its resolution, saying it could take a week or months.

Oak Ridge Principal Leigh Ann Bradshaw was unavailable for comment, and efforts to reach athletic director Janet Rasmussen were unsuccesful.

Watters, 44, is in his first season as a high-school coach.

The former running back played 11 seasons in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks and finished with 10,643 rushing yards, 20th all time in league history

Ricky is from my area. A friend of mine who is a high school coach was very surprised he would become a high school football coach.

With Pay so I wouldn't think it could be too bad.

'with pay' doesn't necessarily mean 'it isn't that bad'. I work for a k-12 district in California, and we currently have an employee from the department I work in who has been on 'paid administrative leave' since april. This dude makes 6 figures and has been at home collecting a check since then.

Im not suggesting that Ricky Watters did the same thing or not, but this guy I work(ed) with was caught with, lets say, 'company equipment at home'.

no one expects that this guy will be back, but at the same time the situation seems to be in a permanent state of limbo.

Right. A lot of times, "with pay" just means "investigation is ongoing; nothing's been proven yet." Doesn't mean the allegation isn't serious, whatever it is.

"With pay" cost a lot less than being wrong in HR issues.

"With pay" to Ricky is like a booger in a snot rag...yada, yada. How much could he possibly be making as a HS coach anyways? Nothing I'm sure to the millions he's earned as an elite NFL running back.

Am looking forward to seeing more facts...

Ricky "Running" Watters...he was awesome!! One of my favorites.

It's common knowledge that the vast majority of NFL players have little money left when they quit football. Even the ones that earned millions. They tend to live the lifestyle and don't think about the future. Not saying this is Ricky and that all players do, but it's been established that most end up this way. Hope Ricky isn't one of them.

Right or wrong, Knight would have been fired and probably sued in this day and age...

Isn't that the truth.

Besides being a coach at Oak Ridge, Watters was a program monitor at the school. His wife, Catherina, taught business education at Oak Ridge. She also resigned.
