Opinions of RR aside, I think it'd be great for a chance to get an ESPN reporter to eat crow, show off our tradition, facilities, all on ESPN's dime.

Seems kinda like some of this should be directed at yourselves a little too, there were quite a few of you pre-season, and almost all the way to week 6, who still had no faith or very little faith. I see there's no shortage of celebration now. Kinda a "do as I say, not as I do" situation, don't ya think? Bet us Kool Aid drinkers seem a lot more wise now.

I think the only three people who thought ND would go 12-0 before the season were you, BobD & Lou Holtz.

he wouldn't be embarrassed, allowing him that kind of access to the program would be a reward.

all he wants to do is go pick up a helmet and a rag, take a picture pretending to clean a helmet and then go home and turn it into a story that espn bigwigs(and unsuspecting irish fans) will eat up, and renegotiate a new multimillion dollar contract for writing garbage and stirring the pot.

he's terrible.

this. classic reilly move, setting himself up to be "embarrassed" while getting all kinds of attention for himself and a nice TV spot for his employer in the process. he's an attention-seeker and self-promoter who, to me, is annoying as any writer in the country. it would be really nice if ND just ignored him on this one.

I agree with you guys on principle, but the players want him there to keep his word so I'm cool with him doing it.

"No, I'm not going 2 welsh on my bet. I will polish Notre Dame's helmets. Penance is penance. Trying 2 get permission."

He just went back up in my book.

I don't want this jerkoff anywhere near our helmets.

The thought of Reilly getting attention for rubbing his bad luck hands all over our helmets makes me sick. I hope Swarbick tells him to get bent.

The real glaring issue I have with comparing fans who are trying to be objective, and Rick Reilly...Reilly's article was an attempt to give credence to and ride popular sentiment into a paycheck...as well I think he TRIED TO DO ND HARM. He tried to whip up some sort of movement to relegate ND to some vision of it that suits the haters and pretenders who think because they have a football team, they ARE...entitled themselves to the spoils that come from multiple generations of having success THE RIGHT WAY. If that seems no more offensive to you than a fan who thought we looked like an 8w team based on past results and schedule...geez I'm sorry...but the difference in intent and also how the fan and Reilly are feeling right about now should make it pretty clear.

We all want to say I told you so from time to time...I don't get the swipe via the generic fan comparison to a man who is...no doubt, the enemy to what has been built , and now poised to grow at ND.

Isn't a "bet" between two parties? Who from ND took him up on said bet when he first announced it?

I agree. The thought of it really rubs me the wrong way. What's really asinine is Reilly equating that rubbing those gorgeous golden helmets is a punishment for him being a pompous *** that must tweet every little thought that pops into his wacked-out mind. It is truly a privilege and should be treated as such.

I don't see any scenario where he is allowed to put his grimy hands on something so sacred to Notre Dame football after the way he has shamelessly used his "profession" to try and belittle our Lady.

If he wants to come to ND for a educational visit to show him firsthand how wrong he was than yes by all means take your medicine that way.

This.

If Reilly wants access to the program, I hope ND makes him earn it.

I would prefer Notre Dame would ignore him, he's no friend to Notre Dame.

How many people would jump at the chance to polish a helmet? Rick's not one of them. We don't need him to give us more publicity, anyone watching ESPN today. Even Cowherd is loving on us.

Either:

A. Reilly is saying this in order to later be like "couldn't get permission" or claim a logistical issue.

or

B. So he can turn it into a thing that will air on ESPN.

If it's B, then I have zero problem with Reilly owning up. He's being a good sport and penance is penance. I think all the guys on the team would get a kick out of Reilly doing it and I probably would too.

I don't care one way or the other about his intent, I just don't want him touching our helmets. The dude has bad juju and I don't want him rubbing it all over our helmets.

Lets make it a half hour show and put proceeds toward Lou's Lads or something.

I don't think that any of the ND students that prepped helmets through the years thought of it as penance. It was a labor of love which Reilly's participation would dishonor.

The focus never should have been on him in the first place. The fact that he tried to assert his worthless opinion, which has now been explicitly debunked for those willing to entertain his nonsense, into our season is enough. Dude has had his horrible 15, now it's time to move on. I say drop him now, and keep him the eff off our territory. Protect the house.

Amen.

This isn't something that's done for punishment, I think a lot of us would give their first born (well maybe third or fourth born) to have the honor.

Rick Reilly should suit up and run some rodeo drills for penance. (Sans gold helmet of course.)

Gotta agree with a lot of you in saying that I dont want him near our helmets or campus for that matter. The guy continues to use Notre Dame to get himself into the media spotlight. F Rick Reilly

...Hadn't thought of this.

I don't want a handshake peace with this guy...I want the kind that comes about when a bad actor simply withers, and dies.

However if it is simply too enticing for the powers that be to have a handshake peace with this piece...then lets leave a long proud tradition out of it...

Yeah, I don't want his grubby, sensationalist media hands touching our athletic equipment. Painting the helmets is a time honored tradition that he doesn't need to be a part of.

The guy is a terrible writer. All you have to do is read his tripe and you get it about four lines in. If you don't get that, then i don't know what to tell you. We've all seen people "fail upward" in business, because of friends in the right places or circumstances or whatever. His position is NO indication of skill, not unlike many others, unfortunately...

And no, I do not want him anywhere near our helmets.

this is all a marketing ploy, I hope ND doesn't let him near the helmets

Anyone notice that a PUBLISHED WRITER misspelled WELCH, as in not WELCH on a bet?

ND is not located in the UK, you pompous arse!

EDIT: And the only thing that he should be polishing is Jack and Brian's shoes...with his tongue.

LIVE IN HD, OF COURSE

Yeah.. I saw that.

I was about to tweet him about it, then I was about to bring it up here... then I remembered we're going to Miami and said "**** it!"

A lot of you are taking the 'be the bigger man' approach, but I bet ND lets him come here.

It gives ND free exposure of our campus, perhaps wins over the heart of an ESPN writer (how could this be bad?), and it'd be awesome for the players. Example:

Rick Reilly‏@ReillyRick

Will I be able 2 tell which one's yours? (No reason, of course!) MT @KLM_89 @ReillyRick ILL SEE YOU IN SOUTH BEND POLISHING OUR HELMETS!!!

Because Notre Dame doesn't have to pander to the media and especially not this fool. I hold that be very a endearing quality of ND.
