I'm not saying I agree with the sanctions or anything, but I do think the self-imposed ban from the ACC championship game last year was significant. They gave up a chance to play FSU and earn a spot in a BCS game (Orange Bowl). Granted, they probably would've lost anyway, but I still think it was significant.

As for the penalties...anything short of what USC received was going to miss the boat for me. The NCAA had them dead to rights and totally screwed it up. If you're a Miami fan, you have to be happy with how this thing ended.

i wonder sometimes if osu would have self imposed themselves a bowl game the year they were terrible before urban how hard the NCAA would have cracked down on em.

told everyone around home for months they should self impose and hope for the best. they sucked that year anyway. played florida in the gator bowl.

Given their initial screw up of the investigation and witch hunting, I think the NCAA was afraid of the backlash if they came down real hard. This is more like a slap on the wrist and a promise to do better.

If I'm SC, I'm PISSED! Not only did they get the hammer, but they witnessed, since then, PSU get a reduction in penalties (right or wrong) and UM get hardly a slap on the wrist for what seems to be a much more egregious act. Don't get me wrong, I love the butt hurt coming out of SC, but I totally understand their POV.

That's exactly what it is. And the fact the NCAA screwed this up is just a prime example of what an inept organization it is.

So, I've followed this situation closely from the day news broke because I know Sean "PeeWee" Allen personally. We aren't friends (only on facebook), but in 2010 we spent a week together as he helped out on an event my organization was running in Miami. First of all, the dude is hilarious. He's an alcoholic, but hilarious nonetheless. He had me rolling every time I was around him. From the moment I met him he let it be known he had a significant connection to the Miami program. He detailed all of the shits he does to help the program recruit - strip clubs, lavish parties, monetary benefits for players, the whole nine yards. His stories then were exactly what Yahoo reported when they broke the news later that year.

Shapiro gift-wrapped the investigation for the NCAA and Allen corroborated everything Shapiro said. Yet, the NCAA still found a way to screw it up.

What people fail to realize is that the reason USC got hammered is that they said "COME AT ME, BRO!" to the NCAA.

Every other school that gets off "easy" has cooperated, self-sanctioned, etc. USC literally lied, obfuscated the truth, played dumb, stonewalled, and basically gave the NCAA the finger. If they had shown an ounce of humility they never would've gotten hammered how they did.

Basically the moral of the story is that if the NCAA comes after you feign being apologetic and proactive, self-sanction, "cooperate," talk about how you trust the NCAA to be awesome and fair, and negotiate your sanctions. DO NOT do a Mike Garrett and say:
I read between the lines and there was nothing but a lot of envy, and they wish they all were Trojans. As I told my staff, I said, 'You know, I feel invigorated by all this stuff ... with the penalty we got today I know we're bigger than life.'

I understand your point, and it's a valid one. Mike Garrett was a colossal @$$hat to boot! But the real moral of the story here, to me, is that you can do whatever you want - LITERALLY ANYTHING - but as long as you say "my bad", you'll get off relatively scot-free. Where's the incentive to play within the rules?

Yeah, there isn't one. As long as you have two-degrees of separation from the head coach or chief administrators then you're not going to get hit hard as long as you cooperate.

Dan Patrick was saying the same that if you get ahead of the sanctions, show remorse and impose a few minor sanctions you won't get hit hard. It's easy to skip a minor bowl. The minor bowls normally cost the school in the end.

GITF, has it been portrayed like that anywhere official? Reason I ask is that, in the case of USC it was quoted as 30 scholarships over 3 years, but it was 10 'initial counters' per year, and their roster max was 75 (not 55).

I assumed it was 22 'initial counter's per year, with a scholarship limit of 82 per year for 3 years. I hope you are correct.


A couple of other general points:
1)I imagine that the NCAA were walking somewhat of a thin line here. Given that the chair of the COI looking at the USC infractions happened to be the AD at Miami during the Miami transgressions, if Miami get hammered really bad it might cause people to question the USC sentence. Commissioner Gordon thought he had a tough dilemma about Harvey Dent and his crime spree at the end of Dark Knight.
2)Agree that these self-sanctions are starting to look somewhat like a 'drive-thru confession': "I'll have the strippers, booze, swag, tats, concert tickets. It's been 15 minutes since my last confession. Do you take Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl bans as method of payment?"

So at Florida they have future serial killers.

At FSU they have rape and a police force that covers it up.

At Miami you have drug rape of a minor.

I've always had the thought of moving to Florida at some point in my life, now I'm not sure I'd fit in.
