Ya Bishop. Can't participate in a race Convo, cuz not one of "us". LOL

Thats funny...don't care who you are...

I like Bish...probably because we agree on most things, and the things we don't, he seems pretty respectful...and since when does being a fan of another team invalidate someone's inputs in a politics thread?

If I was feeling insulted by something he said, I suppose I might try and vector him into a corner about being an outsider to silence him...but wooly, from a practical perspective, I'd be pissed at you if this were my site....

I know I have add banners all the eff over my IE experience...gonna lean out there and guess that someone in the chain here makes revenue from all of that, and it contributes to the site...No I don't know the exact agreement...if it depends on actual clicks, or # of users who see the banners...but users keep my shit free, and the site kick ass. Yea, yea, yea free is for the poors...sure. Non ND guys maybe don't make up enough to draw concern about revenue, truth be told...but having similar revenue streams of my own, I don't want anyone run off. Also unless they are trolls right out of the gate...most fans from other teams have been ok in these non-fan related discussions. Also says something about this place that they'd be welcome here. I guess MY POINT is, the more the merrier...

oh good lord...so there are SO, SO many original things to say in one of these...sheesh. About the only one in the last 200 years with a unique perspective will be Bill Clinton, which tells me thats why they are picking at Trumps spouse now....hacks.

I wasn't super impressed...I'm never real impressed when a spouse talks about the other...what is she gonna say...his dick really isn't that big???

I will say though...in her short experience as a citizen, she HAS ALWAYS been proud to be one...shrug.

You will never be anything but a guest here, sorry. This board is for Notre Dame fans, not Bama fans. You are welcome to post and add whatever you want, but you are not part of our community, as our community is one of Notre Dame supporters. That's not being personal or attacking you. That's just a fact. If I went to a Bama board, regardless of how I acted, I would always be a guest. Regardless of how many "stripes" I earned, I would stay away from topics like politics or interjections into arguments. It wouldn't be my place and it would be disrespectful.

Ndgrad has consistently said things that the vast majority of this board disagree with. I have the right to acknowledge it in the same way that others have the right to support him. You may not like my verbiage, but that frankly isn't any of your business. You are free to go to the Bama boards and interject in their arguments. Those are your peers.

lol this is a freakin Notre Dame football forum, not Skull and Bones. Anyone is free and welcome to join into any of the conversations.

Don't know what kind of crowd there was early on, as I was on a flight to Salt Lake City. I tuned in when I got to my hotel and and saw a very small crowd with far more empty chairs than people. Joni Ernst who I thought was one of the GOP up and comers, was speaking. Was sorta sad, really. If nothing else, I thought the pull of Scott Baio would put asses in seats. lol

Were they mad because she ripped off Michelle Obama's 2008 speech?

All this time I thought you were an open minded liberal, when all this time you're just a staunch democrat! lol

He may have intended to defend "old white men" and the contributions that they made to Western Civilization, the source of our own country and the heritage of the modern world, but at the same time, he denigrated others. I cannot stand by that.

So do you believe that each civilization has equally contributed? Europe has produced the same in terms of economics, technology, science, philosophy, political theory, law, etc., as every other inhabited continent?

King was wrong to suggest that other civilizations have not contributed anything (although he didn't actually say that; he asked for examples. I wouldn't mind hearing those examples myself.) But they have not produced in equal proportion to Europe and its progeny.

Charles Murray has examined the sort of claim made by King and found that it is basically true. Maybe it is impolite to say the truth under these circumstances, but then Mr. Pierce was bashing white people, so maybe politeness had gone out the window?

Well, the Chinese invented gunpowder, which is a GIANT contribution. Some would argue a negative contribution, but it's magnitude cannot be doubted.

The ancient Egyptians seemed to know a thing or two about engineering, and have been studied and copied countless times throughout the course of history.

Aspirin was first used in parts of Africa.

Those are a few, with little to no researching involved.

I did not one bit say that other cultures have contributed as much to our world as Western civilization, but I'll ignore this because it will lead nowhere.

I am admonishing King for "where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you're talking about". At the very least it comes across as tone deaf at a time where the congressman's party is seen as racist. I am of the opinion that too few appreciate the heritage that Western Civilization has handed to us, but that does not mean that King should belittle other people.

Do you know anything of the rest of the world?
Off the top of my head:
Coffee came from Yemen
Algebra from the Middle East as well (along with some other math)
Optics originally came from Egypt and Messopotamia and later advance came from the Middle Eas
Weren't the earliest sewers from the India/Pakistan area?

The West might be responsible for more (though in truth it is hard to quantify it) but I think that the Middle East in particular gets undersold on their importance in advancing knowledge especially during the 8th century to the 12th or 13th century.

The Muslim thinkers were the ones who preserved Aristotle, without whom Aquinas would not be possible.

Ironically, the Middle East has the oldest documented alcoholic beverages like beer and wine. That invention is the only reason any of us are even here, they win.

Side note: the Middle East used to have some of the world's greatest scientists, mathematicians, etc. Something has been lost in terms of progress on that region nowadays. More proof alcohol is absolutely necessary for progress and happiness to occur.

Hopefully yes.

For example, I thank the Middle East for creating beer. The English for adding more hops to it (IPA) and San Diego for hopping the shit out of it. I can celebrate all three at the same time.

And removing some of the maltiness. They unbalanced the IPA. And I love them for it.

I mean... we want to talk about this straight? No Bullshit? Europeans and Caucasian Americans, along with certain Asian peoples, are responsible for 99%+ of major technological, scientific, and societal advances in modern history.

Arabs inventing algebra is highly debatable.... many believe it's origins are rooted in Greek (or possibly Indiana) work in mathematics. They sure as hell didn't do anything for advanced mathematics like calculus, etc.

Coffee gives points to the Egyptians. Can't really think of any others off the top of my head... someone above said "optics" but I always that eyeglasses were Italian?

I can list literally HUNDREDS of major advancements/inventions by Caucasians... as well as many by various Asians. So are we interested in accuracy/truth here or being politically correct?

Eyeglasses were Italian I believe but the oldest lens found was Assyrian.
Coffee is from Yemen (though I think the first coffea trees came from Ethiopa).

I agree that if you look at what we commonly use then it skews Western big time, but many current things inventions depend upon previous ones (though many previous inventions, and advances came from Western Societies many came from other societies as well (Asia, Middle East, etc).

The issue comes from Rep. King questioning what other non-western societies have contributed and many things have been discussed (but those could include China, India, the Middle East, Egypt, etc). As I said earlier in this thread it is very likely true that the West has given more advances and inventions but King questioned what other societies have done and that is incorrect as other societies have given us many things as well.

*I had always heard that the roots of Algebra started with the Babylonians and if true that still puts it in the middle east.
**Same could be said for things such as the Pythagorean Theorem which the Babylonians were using a 1000+ years earlier.

People seem to be talking past each other here. One should be an egalitarian when it comes to people, and an elitist when it comes to ideas. Western Civilization has the best ideas... period. No other civilization has produced anything remotely comparable to Greek reason, Roman law and Christian theology.

But is the obvious superiority of those ideas strong evidence for the racial superiority of Europeans? Absolutely not. The idea of "race" itself is pseudo-scientific nonsense which has been used to justify some of the worst tragedies of the modern age.

Circling back around to the origins of this debate, King's comments were offensive because he made them about people, and not about ideas.

Maybe it's because they started drinking too much beer and wine! lol
