C'mon man, this isn't a "tit for tat" balance sheet where one atrocity can cancel out another. Yes, the massacre was terrible, but so was chattel slavery. It's one thing to defend Western civilization, but it's another to play into Wooly's game and bring up the killing of white men by black men as an answer to the calls of "but slavery".

We're supposed to approve of some Esquire writer condemning GOP voters for being too "white." I'd like to know in which town in Massachusetts Mr. Pierce lives- I'll bet it's pretty white.

We're supposed to be appalled by Steve King replying to this by saying that white people have made positive contributions to society. I'm not appalled by that.

LOL. Except that isn't what King said. Nice try.

Throughout history, people of every race and color have been slaves and slave owners at one point or another. "Slavery" is not a unique blemish of white oppression of black. The fact is, these sins do not transcend space and time. "White people" are collectively no more responsible for slavery than "black people" are collectively responsible for gang violence. Statistics obscure the fact that it's individuals that have committed and continue to commit these atrocities, not groups.

Except he specifically was addressing colonial America, not ancient fucking Rome.

The part of the story that everyone will cling to rightfully is the "where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you're talking about". The Congressman could have made his point much better without this line, but instead the message is tainted by his inability to think before he spoke.

There's no need to lecture an old classics major about the history of slavery in Greek and Roman civilization, but King did nothing to mitigate the reaction that he would receive. He may have intended to defend "old white men" and the contributions that they made to Western Civilization, the source of our own country and the heritage of the modern world, but at the same time, he denigrated others. I cannot stand by that.

Yeah, god forbid a bunch of slaves dare fight back. I guess 3k white captor deaths is more important than generations of slavery ya racist bastard...

Never said it was worse, but it happened.

Would you be willing to disclose the demography of your zip code? Anybody who wants to deliver a lecture on how racist white people are needs to make a declaration of interest in this way.

I can't speak for Wooly, but I can speak for myself. I live in AZ so there isn't a significant amount of black people but my zip code is over 20% Hispanic (and about 5% Asian and 5% black). I believe that white people make up about 2/3 of the zip code population.

What is this suppose to prove? My first home that I owned was probably 50% Hispanic and 50% White.

Wooly, are you capable of having a civil, intelligent conversation with anyone who disagrees with you without resorting to personal attacks, insults, and ridiculous name calling? An intelligent person defending a valid position needs no such approach. For the past week you've been doing a more than passable impersonation of JugheadJones. This isn't the comments section of an ESPN article where the double digit IQ types trade 4th-grade-level insults with everyone they disagree with. Be better than that, bro.

First of all, what did I say that was incorrect? He was the one that made the original comment about "yeah.. Like what have white people ever done" and posted a picture of colonial America. I have the same right to comment on it (especially considering his history, which you failed to recognize) as he does to post here. Which brings me to fact #2...

Don't forget you are a guest here. You are a Bama fan that comes here and posts in the politics thread. You have gotten in multiple arguments with long time posters here and at the end of the day... We are Notre Dame fans on a Notre Dame board. If you want to start instigating arguments with us, then you might be barking up the wrong tree. I don't go on Bama sites and butt into debates, have some respect and don't come to our sites and butt into ours.

I prefer not to have Bama fans adding to the narrative of arguments. This is a board for Notre Dame fans, period. Any contributions from outside fans are looked as comments from guests. That has been and always will be a fact. I'm sure you're fine with it, as he was sticking up for you. Something zero longtime, respected posters have done for you.

I responded in kind, and this is your best rebuttal? Typical.

Wait so the logic here is that pointing out that a disturbing number of blacks live under rather racist conditions (due to be forced either legally or economically to live in ghettos) is hypocritical because that person doesn't live in the ghetto with them? Or a suburbanite in general, also born into a position outside of their control, is somehow unable to sympathize with populations receiving a shitty deal from society?

Which team I'm a fan of has no bearing on whether your behavior is beneath civil and intelligent discussion. You're deflecting from the point made. That being said, I'm not a guest here. I was at one point nearly four years ago, but I've earned my stripes, contributed, participated regularly for years, always been civil, and tried to the best of my ability to bring some intelligence and fairness to every discussion I've participated in. So take your "You're a guest/outsider with no right to speak your opinion" silliness and file it where it belongs.

As for your disagreement with NDgradstudent's posts, I never said anything about you being incorrect or not having the right to disagree with him. I simply pointed out that as of late, your responses to anyone and everyone you disagreed with consisted mostly of insults, personal attacks and name calling. Again, intelligent people (and I consider you to absolutely be one) have no need to do such when arguing a valid point.

What is this, the House of Lords?

Just an observation. Most posters don't think highly of you. Mostly because you have offended damn near every person on this site at one time or another. That's not an insult, just giving you the answer to the question you asked. No... It's not a House of Lords, we just dont like the things you post here.

You will never be anything but a guest here, sorry. This board is for Notre Dame fans, not Bama fans. You are welcome to post and add whatever you want, but you are not part of our community, as our community is one of Notre Dame supporters. That's not being personal or attacking you. That's just a fact. If I went to a Bama board, regardless of how I acted, I would always be a guest. Regardless of how many "stripes" I earned, I would stay away from topics like politics or interjections into arguments. It wouldn't be my place and it would be disrespectful.

Ndgrad has consistently said things that the vast majority of this board disagree with. I have the right to acknowledge it in the same way that others have the right to support him. You may not like my verbiage, but that frankly isn't any of your business. You are free to go to the Bama boards and interject in their arguments. Those are your peers.

Liberals can definitely "sympathize" better than anybody else.

I believe that wealthy liberals use claims of racism as a tactic in getting what they want from the real estate market and from the school system. For example, when NYC was considering redrawing district lines on the Upper West Side, the paradigmatic members of the liberal gentry objected:

One P.S. 452 parent speaking out against the move is comedian and former Daily Show correspondent Jason Jones, who’s married to Samantha Bee. "To portray any opposition as classist or racist is as bad as it can get," Jones told WNYC. And elsewhere: "We are not divided,” he said at a public hearing about the proposal, “we are absolutely united in wanting what's best for our children," then encouraged fellow parents not to talk to the press about the controversy.

Of course they want what's best for their children. If people in Yonkers do this, though, they're racist.

So what's the demography of your zip code?

Don't know what kind of crowd there was early on, as I was on a flight to Salt Lake City. I tuned in when I got to my hotel and and saw a very small crowd with far more empty chairs than people. Joni Ernst who I thought was one of the GOP up and comers, was speaking. Was sorta sad, really. If nothing else, I thought the pull of Scott Baio would put asses in seats. lol

So what's the demography of your zip code?

I doubt there are a dozen black people in my zip code. Is my Klu Klux Klan membership in the mail?

I can walk out my front door and throw a baseball into a cornfield. The county seat of my county is a "city" of about 6,000.

Your stupid generalization doesn't work for people in rural America.

Though I will say your post the other day about northerners being very racist when if comes to drawing arbitrary political lines was spot on. Congratulations, liberals are hypocrits like everyone else. The rich, regardless of their political stances, don't care to live down the street from the poor. Is this news to anyone?
