I just don't get why voters accept this. I'm ready to invest in jails. Lots of jails.

Too lenient, we need a strong deterrent. Need capital punishment reinstated in all states for certain crimes and enforced. Only half the states still have it on the books, and among those only 12 states have done an execution in the last 10 years, mostly in the south. We've actually seen the executions numbers dip since 2016, we went from ~35 a year to ~25 a year and then just 11 in 2021. We're on track for the same in 2022 with 6 through June. I'm of the opinion if you shoot two police officers and the evidence is rock solid...go directly to see your maker. No need to be a drain on the public's coffers for dozens of years or the rest of your life rotting in jail.

Sure, morally bankrupt people will do it regardless if they think they can get away with it. It doesn't mean stronger penalties can't work in helping deter crime. For a long period Iran had lower theft crimes because they still remove fingers and hands for criminals that stole. Crime is up in Iran right now though with the economic collapse, although that's probably true for a lot of nations as people try to survive. Not saying I agree with their practice to remove body parts, just using it as an example. I just believe in certain cases of murder and some other crimes that death should be an appropriate penalty. Better than keeping a scumbag alive on the tax payer's dime for decades.

I get it that more severe punishments can be a deterrent for various crimes. But absolutely nobody, when deciding to commit a heinous murder in a state with capital punishment, is swayed from the fact that they could be executed VS life in prison without parole.

I could be wrong, but I believe pretty much all the cost studies out there have shown that a judgement of the death penalty is more costly for states than life without parole because of the huge legal bills that are racked up because of all of the lengthy appeals. That’s partially the reason why some states have dropped it, cost savings.

Death penalty doesn’t save money, isn’t a deterrent, however it does satisfy our desire for “justice”.

However a good childhood friend and my niece were both murdered in the same fashion (stabbing) and both offenders got 20+ year sentences. The killer of my friend is walking free already and my wife’s family has had to fight to keep my niece’s killer behind bars and it hasn’t been even 15 years yet. That’s bullshit and extremely maddening,… my niece’s killer we found didn’t give her fatal wounds, he stabbed her, locked her in a closet for hours and slowly let her bleed out. He should never see freedom again, but here we are,…

Yeah, fuck that! No way should that psycho go free. If it was my daughter left to bleed out I'd be taking the law into my own hands. I'm sorry that happened to your niece and your friend. That's awful.

Well, until 2018 the official church stance was fine with the death penalty (Although there were some Popes that disagreed and suggested it be removed). Even after Pope Francis' Catechism revisions in 2018 there were many bishops and cardinals that spoke out about the revisions.

I'm probably not a great Catholic because I believe the church isn't infallible. After all, the church is run by men. They're often revising positions that were handed down from the early days, sometimes for good and sometimes maybe not so. Another example of a Church position I don't follow: I do not participate in "No meat" Lent. There's a number of reasons for this, but the main one being beef/pork/etc was considered more of a delicacy in the Middle East at that time due to the scarcity. They gave up the luxury. Why wasn't fish included? Because it was a huge staple of their diet. In the West it's quite the opposite today. Meat is more our staple diet, while seafood is the luxury. Rather than give up meat I tend to give up other luxuries that I enjoy.

Yesterday a guy walked into Old Navy and stole $2k worth of clothing… literally grabbed a bunch of jeans and just walked out.

That evening he comes back and does exactly the same thing.

This morning he does the same thing.

This afternoon he comes back and police are waiting for him. He’s given a trespass card and told not to come back.

The End.

Around $6k in theft… and that’s a lot of shit since it’s Old Navy… and he’s given a trespass card. I feel like a sucker buying stuff from vendors knowing I could just probably walk to Dicks and steal their inventory sell it at my store with little consequences.

The point is that it will deter that particular murderer from doing it again. If it deters others that’s icing on the cake.
