Minneapolis city council has voted to end the police department and use public safety. Mayor is against it, but per Fox News, he can't veto. Not sure what this means, but that city is in for some serious problems if there isn't a way to fight crime.

Stupid Democrats being their normal selves.

De Blasio is cutting a large amount from the NYPD budget. He is gonna give it to Juvenile programs (lol) and social services (lmao). But wants to keep the city safe. No matter how hard you try you can’t fix stupid.

I fully support people's right to protest, but after 10 days of this nationwide (rioting and looting aside), I'm questioning what the goal is.

The officer in question has been arrested and Minneapolis wants the entire department to disappear. So what other results are trying to be achieved here?

The protest here in Philly on Saturday was massive. Tens of thousands. Our governor supports this but still content with keeping most businesses closed.

Indy saw a large gathering of 30K on Saturday, but paper reported much smaller crowds Sunday morning. The goal is to continue protesting until changes with police departments are implemented. Not sure how you track and monitor those changes and decide it's okay.

I am white and wasn't a huge fan of Family Ties. Justine Bateman, who played the sister, was cute though. Her brother, Jason, is the popular actor now.

I was a huge Cheech and Chong fan. My Father, God rest his soul, was too. He said they reminded him of all his buddies from Catholic school growing up in East LA. I was also into Sanford & Son, Good Times and Chico and the Man. TV was way better back in my day!

Friggin’ loved Sanford & Son. One of the best themes songs ever. I heard a local radio dude put lyrics to it. Went something like this...

“My name is Sanford
I got a son, his name’s Lamont
Don’t forget about Grady
And Bubbbbbba too
Aunt Esther calls me ‘fish-eyed fool’”

The goal of the protestors is police reform. Some have a goal of defunding the police. At this point, it has very little to do with what happened specifically in Minneapolis. Although the visual images of that incident are certainly being used to further the cause.

So went to two local guns stores on Saturday and after waiting in line to enter at one for more than an hour and heading to the other where the other line was twice as long I figured I would try another day. Most people I spoke with were first time buyers. I know police departments are not perfect, but do we really want people who will probably never train or go to a gun range running around neighborhoods trying to stop crime?!?!

I'm a bit irritated by it because I have many friends in Minneapolis. I was considering applying to transfer to the U of MN but I cant imagine being there at this point in time.

A place of privledge? How does that even make any sense? People who live in innercities call the police exponentially more than those who live rurally or in the suburbs. And cops respond and take care of their problems because, again, cities have more crime inturn more victims than other areas. This imbecile is acting like only "privleged" people have an option to call the police? And I would like to see her reaction when she has to explain to the family of a social worker, or whatever public safety mechanism they use to replace police, has to respond to a burglary, DV incident, report of a guy with a gun...etc and gets hurt or killed.

It's a shame, the people that are going to suffer from this will be the inner-city residence who can't leave. I'd really like to know what the credentials are of these people promoting this? My guess is a PhD and assistant manager at Starbucks pretty much sums up their "expert" and "professional" experience.

EDIT: I looked her up. Her accomplishments are a masters from Berkley and working for different transportation departments in different cities organizing bicycle coalitions that promote safe and joyful bike riding. You cant make this up

This talk of 80's sitcoms reminded me of one of my favorite SNL skits.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/olZrycBSiyk" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

That cast was so stacked.

Sanford and Son and Welcome Back Kotter - two of my older faves.

Here's a thought for you to ponder, an armed citizen as first responder.

Wife finally agrees on firearm training and a home protector. Too bad we will have to wait half an eternity to get it done now. Question is now whether I go for conceal carry or not.

She says "For those of us for whom the system is working, we need to step back and reimagine what it's like for those that calling the police would cause more harm instead." Ok, so the system is working for some (the majority) and not working for others. So, we're going to blow the system up because it doesn't work for a portion of the population? Why not just reform? Sounds like we're throwing the baby out with the bath water.

This. Horrible messaging from the progressive side of things, instead of defunding there should be debates for example - on whether spending on armoured vehicles is necessary and if that money could be better spent somewhere else.

One lesson I’ve learned from all this, if you want to revoke someone’s voice, silence them or dismiss their pov without addressing them further.... call them privileged. It’s as ironic as it is stupid. However in this hyper PC world it seems to be very effective.

Yep. On the bright side, cold beer in the middle console might come back in style if MN gets rid of the police.

And on a different note, Chicago sets a new personal best... 18 murders in 24 hours.

That lady is crazy. Her reply is basically saying let them break in and take what they want. That way damage is minimized. What about those "not privileged" that have their homes broken into? Minneapolis is going to become a dumpster fire. I can see businesses and families moving out if this happens.

That's how these people think. Refine or tweak something? Heck no. Let's start from the ground up so we can feel better about being involved.

Listened to the radio where this guy mentions a poll taken among blacks. Only one in five believe there has been any significant progress made in civil rights and race relations since MLK.

He then points out that we have had a black president and a number of black governors. As of 2018 , 57.1% of black mayors served in cities (over 40,000) that did not have a black majority population.

This is not meant to mean that enough change has been made, but more that we tend to let our emotions overrule the truth.

It'd be hilarious if this woman wasn't in a position of power. Privilege? Only white people call 911? Only white people get robbed?

If you want to be labeled a racist, start throwing numbers like these at the people talking about systemic racism.

I understand the point, but I am not sure that one statistic points this to being more about emotion than truth.

When you look at things like education (college degrees), family income, wealth, etc., it would show that the relative metrics today are really no better than what they were 50 years ago. For example, educational attainment. Blacks have risen 19 percentage points since 1964 compared to 26 percentage points for whites.

I could list more, but I think we get the point. Now, I am not saying this is 100% the results of systemic racism. I believe there are many aspects that contribute to these statistics, including things like single parents. But one thing that doesn't get addressed enough IMO is the difference in identity between whites and other races. Whites overwhelmingly do not have their central identity revolve around being white, only about 15% according to Pew. That compares to nearly 75% of African Americans and nearly 60% for Asians and Hispanics. This has an obvious impact to not only how African Americans feel about the situation, but how/why white people have a harder time truly relating to the hardships.

9/12 City Council members have voted to defund and get rid of MPLS PD, and now the talk is going to a community based system. I don't have many more details, but then again I am across the river so I don't really worry do much about it. My only reason for going into MPLS was for TWINS games.

If this does happen, well, I am going to grab a bag of popcorn and a few boxes of 9MM, sit on my porch and enjoy the show. I mean, MPLS has some really rough areas like any big city, but MPD has done a Fantastic job, so good in fact that the first tier suburbs crime rates went up. The bad guys didn't want to do business or live in the city anymore, it was to harsh. I guess they will be moving back?
