Be careful where you get it. German Shepherds are great dogs but prone to hip dysplasia and arthritis.

The dog will cost more from a breeder but you've got a better chance of a dog without hip problems from a breeder.

Yeah I've read that they have had problems with that. I doubt I'll ever get one, I have never had a pet.

Honestly man if it's ur first pet, get a rescue dog. Get a breed you like and you'll never have a better pet.

Agree with this. As a first pet rescues are a great choice. They mostly come housebroken, and already socialized around other dogs.

*Do not underestimate the Herculean task raising a puppy is. I can attest it is just as, if not more difficult than a newborn baby, and I'm sure others that have had both agree.

I'm not the religious type but if you could at least send some positive thoughts my way I'd appreciate it. This guy is at the vets overnight and it isn't looking too good.

I need to bust the myth that you 'can't teach old dogs new tricks'.

I have a 9 year old mini-Aussie. Knows a few tricks, but I want to teach him how to shake. I've probably spent ~ 45 minutes over the past 2 days sitting in front of him like a moron, encouraging him to shake with small treats. After saying it about 10 times, I pick up his hand and 'good boy' him and give him a portion of the treat. Rinse and repeat.

He's not even close to lifting his paw on his own. Any advice?

Leave him alone and let him enjoy his life? He's a 9 year old dog that couldn't care less if he shakes your hand. Put a respectable person in front of him and he'll probably shake their hand.

All kidding aside, I've taught a few dogs to shake before but it was only the ones that liked to jump up that would learn. The others didn't care.

UND Mack is also learning quite a few new things for an older dog.

-She is learning how to get up on the couches when no one is looking.
-She is learning how to get into her dog food in between meals.
-She is learning how to pull entire pans of food off of the counter.
-She is learning all the signs of "these fvkers want to give me a bath again cuz I smell like shit, time to hide'.
-She is absolutely, positively, learning that the cat is not to be fvked with.

We were actually on WNDU at the ND vs Duke tailgate as any female that sees her is instantly infatuated.

My youngest and UND Mackie have like super bonded... def going to be her dog moving forward, though Mack still clearly views me as 'master' or the alpha or whatever.

My youngest just loves this dog and vice versa...

They sleep together at night but even during the day they'll play hard and crash hard, right next to each other... lol

I tried it for a day and it just wasn't sticking. I also tried Arya as I am a GOT geek but that didn't stick either.

I have to admit though... naming your dog after Emilio Izaguirre was a sick move bro... mad props.

I can't tell you how many I've raised. Currently have 4 month old Redbone named Lucy we got over July 4th weekend. She's been housebroken for a couple of months, won't leave the yard, comes when I call her and goes to "jail" (her crate) when told. Yes Koon, she shakes.

The key is to make the dog your focal point above everything else, when you bring a pup home. Doesn't take more the 2-3 weeks to get the basics established.

This is Lucy sleeping with her big sister Ruby.

ive had the same cat since i was 6, he's 19 now and going down the hill quickly. I have to bring his food to him in the recliner he's decided to basically live on. Vet said he's got a tumor on his liver, and just to call when he stops eating. Never had a serious pet other than him (goldfish dont really count). Really sucks to watch your pet near the end of their life. But he's lived a good life, and i've been lucky since it seems most cats go to 18 or less.

UND Mack was supposed to be a great 'good luck charm' for my football teams... hence the ND and Cleveland Browns double name.

.......

and,... that's why I'm a cat person ;) ....

(I am looking to get Mackie a Browns jersey though, fvk it.)

I'm a dad again at 64!

Ruby had her litter Sunday night. She had four, but one was still born. We only bred her once to keep the litter small. Here's a pic right after the second was born. Looks like they'll be the dark mahogany like their mother.

UND Mack ("Oohn-D Mack"... phonetics be damned) has been with us a year now... exactly what I thought an English Bulldog would be... basically a big cat in a dog's body. Still super tight with my youngest, they still play and sleep together daily. She loves car rides though, we try to take her with us whenever we can...

Is that linoleum flooring? Do you even tile, bro?

hah... yup... my wife's top priority in terms of home upgrades. I'm not far off but I really want to enclose one of our two patios for a man cave.
