I don't have time to keep refuting these baseless #HotTakes. The stats say you're wrong, NFL scouts say you're wrong, our players say you're wrong... but Koon's eye test trumps all, right?

Let's see what happens with our OL performance over the next few seasons. If you're right, we shouldn't see much of a regression.

It's not a hot take, I think quite a few people think he was overrated.

He was held in the highest of esteem, but our OL sh!t the bed against the 2 great defenses they played. The overall stats will be pretty, but what do you do against the teams that hit you in the mouth? Our OL folded.

He's a good coach. I wish he was back. But we'll be fine on this one IMO.

So anyway,

Loy and Sampson have publicly put out they'd look at Rick Trickett. Anyone know how old he is? Most coaches have a wiki but I can't find his.

He looks very old.

Do we want to go for the Stanford OL guy and his "special pancake syrup"?

SIAP but looks like Hiestand was gone to the NFL regardless after this year. Multiple teams interested.

Sounds like Nelson/McGlinchey may have been his last hurrah.

Really?

Was at FSU under Jimbo. Just checked aTm and he's not on staff there. I assume Taggart didn't hire him because they wouldn't be talking about him.

Rick Trickett

I would go elsewhere. I'd go after someone just like Warinner but not him of course.

Don't know anything about the guy professionally. And to be quite frank I'm terrible at knowing what good OL play is. I felt like McGlinchy wasn't great, but then he gets graded highest in the nation. Stuff like that I'm not good at.

That being said, I remember a lot of FSU fans did not like him and wanted him gone for the longest time. I hope we look around a little more than that. We got some solid commits for the year. NPF would be icing on the cake whether it happens or not. But we got time to really sit down and find a gem.

Didn't A&M have a run of 1st round O linemen recently too? Maybe that O line coach should get a look

Edit: looks like Jimbo is keeping Jim Turner (the Aggies O Line coach)

Elite programs hold onto their coaches until they either retire or get fired. That our best coaches are getting hired out from under us tells you all you need to know about the state of NDFB.
Come on. The Chicago Bears > Notre Dame.

I'd be surprised if we saw a big drop off next year, no matter who the next coach is. OL has been a slow build since Warriner was coach IMO. He revived the run game a bit, then Harry started bringing in the recruits and improving the pass blocking. If there is a light drop off in production next year, I can already see Koon boasting a victory, but I do think we could be in for a decline over the next few years unless we break from history and nail another OL guru. You're right though, everyone in the business has said Harry is excellent, and his top Drafts have pretty much all opted to come back for their Senior years, boasting of his tutelage.

What's the deal with Warinner? Did he burn a bridge in the OSU move? I saw you mention him earlier in the thread, and I think it wouldn't hurt to bring him back in, even if he wasn't a great recruiter. With any luck recruiting will take care of itself for a bit given our OL Drafts.

What about Art Kehoe? Was the OL coach at Miami for a long time. Lot of years there recruiting and doesn't have a job at the moment.

NFL teams and other college programs want our assistants, but not our head coach. Hmm...

Don't ask. Lax will dress you down for mentioning it.

Fallout from how it went down before he left for OSU.

Warinner had served as the Irish's offensive line coach and running game coordinator. Hinton was the team's running backs coach.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly had promoted former safeties coach Chuck Martin, not Warinner, to offensive coordinator when Charley Molnar left the post to become head coach at Massachusetts. Warinner had served as Kansas' offensive coordinator for three seasons before joining the Irish.

"I really wanted to hire a coach with coordinator experience," Meyer said. "That was very important to me. Ed has that experience. His offenses at Kansas were not only impressive, but they were some of the top offenses in the country."

Warinner, Hinton officially join OSU staff - Notre Dame Fighting Irish- ESPN

You're moving the goalpost and saying things that simply aren't true to help your argument. Under no circumstances are UGA or Miami the two great defenses we played this year. Georgia was a great defensive team that stacked the box and dared Wimbush to pass. We attempted to pass a ton, and Wimbush and the WRs were terrible. It was, admittedly and despite the schematic issues I just noted, the worst game the OL had all year, largely because McGlinchy couldn't keep up with their edge rushers (which has always been a weakness of his). Miami was not a great defensive team at all, they're ranked 43rd in rushing defense and 38th overall. But your offensive line can't help it if your QB can't throw a wide open slant down the middle. Wimbush put us in a hole almost immediately which required us to drop any semblance of a balanced offensive attack, which is difficult for any OL. When we did run it, we often ran slow developing plays that have been derided ad nauseam on this board.

On the other hand, we beat plenty of good to great defensive teams this year using man ball. We destroyed Michigan State ranked 7th overall and 2nd in rushing. We wore down LSU's DL (ranked 12th overall) in the end game once the offensive coaching staff decided to start running misdirection. And we absolutely creamed NC State's vaunted DL (rushing defense ranked 26th overall). So you acting like ND faces good defense = ND's OL gets exposed is ridiculous. The games we lost were games where either the offensive skill players played terribly, or the offensive gameplan was extremely suspect. We didn't win the Joe Moore Award as a prank.

In the run up to that game no one did more to talk up the Wolf Pack's DL and why we were gonna lose than Koon. But never mind the fact that we ran over them all game. That doesn't currently fit with the ridiculous argument he's looking to advance, so we'll just sweep that under the rug.

....Hiestand is a major asshole. It's also what makes him so good.

This happens nearly every time a coach leaves a program, especially on a unit as tight as the OL. Frankly, if a coach on a group that intimate decides you suck, it's hard to get them to change their mind on that. I'm sure there are a few second teamers on the OL that are hoping this is their big break to impress the new guy. It doesn't really mean much about Harry, because it's just a fact of life in the world of OL groups.

7 of the 13 teams we played ended the year in the Top 25, which is a hell of a schedule. None of those teams really had a poor DL imo, and some were certainly elite. I agree with what you're saying, the games we struggled with this year had less to do with the OL and more to do with our game plan and QB play. It was obvious some teams dared Wimbush to pass, and in doing so we tended to struggle offensively.

I may get beat up for this, but neither Elko or HH is a lateral move. Elko is making a reported 500k a year more in Texas and HH is going pro. I think it sucks to lose coaches like this but I see it as people notice what they have done at ND. There’s a lot of talent to work with in South Bend, someone will inherit that and do a great job. I’m trying to stay positive here, but there’s other great coaches out there.
