All week I went on and on about ND handling the pressure and showing up big.

I was completely wrong.

I don’t know who this team is.

Zero heart. Zero leadership. 0.

This game wasn’t determined by weather.

This game is 100% on Kelly.

He’s the boss.

I’m okay if he walks away for something else.

I don’t hate the guy, but these games don’t happen to decent teams, yet alone good teams, and definitely not elite teams.

Long definitely needs to go.

Jurkovec’s clock officially begins now.

It’s like a classic game of “Let’s Make a Deal.” You can have the known commodity in BK—that 10-2 or 9-3 with an occasional shot at the playoffs. Or, you roll the dice and go for what’s behind the doors.

In today’s landscape of CFB, are we really guaranteed that the successor to BK would actually be an upgrade? People clamor about Brohm being our next HC. I’ve seen Joe Moorhead’s name strewn about. Urban Meyer...really? You think the university is going to legitimately allow that to happen? Give me some realistic names that are better than what we’ve got now. I’ll wait.

Realistically, here’s what we know:

- Long is awful. BK’s most egregious offense is sticking with Long this long.
- Ian Book, thanks for 2018, but it’s time to move on.
- Our defense is good, but not great. We miss Love outside and our d line is above average, but not world class.
- We have no real playmakers in the offensive backfield.
- It would be nice to see some semblance of a N/S running game at times, maybe even with a lead blocker. (Wright?)

Yeah, it sucks getting destroyed. There are legitimate questions to be answered—especially pertaining to game prep during the bye week. But I’ll reserve judgement til after the Stanford game. This one went off the rails, but what were all of your predictions in August? Mine was 10-2. That’s still on the table.

I haven't seen anything speculated on the Michael Young transfer. There is a chance there is something deeper here right? Like players on the offensive side losing confidence in Book and Longs ability to run a coherent offense?

Not trying to stir io excuses but the timing was weird and I wonder if there is a rift about this.

Like I said in another thread....who the fuck else would want to come here? Who would want to come here deal with the strict requirements we have and think they can win. We are a team that can capture lighting in a bottle and make it to the dance but when we get to the dance they will never play our music. Unless we decide to change how we run this program to allow great coaches to want to come here this is our destiny. The Citrus Bowl is the biggest thing we can win at this point. Even if we win out when we unfairly get chosen for an NY6 game well...this is what’s going to happen again.

This is the truth. Even if ND offered the job to Meyer, he will pass on it just like he did last time. Academic restrictions will scare any top tier coach off...

I’m all in on this. I would doubt the players would be in a rift about Book necessarily...but could definitely see them united against Long and his playcalling.

A lot of things went bad. A lot of the kids didn’t play well. Hell a few of them may have quit. But I’m sorry.

Troy Pride is awful..

Troy Pride = Gary Gray (they both possessed elite speed)
Alohi Gilman is horrible in pass coverage
Jalen Elliott misses too many tackles
The LB unit got caught up in traffic on every big run play
Asmar Bilal over pursued himself out of a lot of plays tonight
None of the blitzes seemed to get home & when they did they got in their own way and prevented themselves from getting the sack.

The OL is back to catching blocks. They were abysmal in run blocking & not much better in pass pro.
Ian Book regressed to bailing from the pocket when his primary read was covered & he still won’t pull the trigger & throw a receiver open or hit a tight window...dammit!
ND lacks an elite RB. TJJ is a solid change of pace & decent vs bad teams. Jafar is either still not healthy or forgot he’s a RB not a WR.
TE still can’t block good defenses.
Special Teams’s good doesn’t outweigh the bad.
I’m assuming Finke was told to fair catch everything...if not, he needs replaced.

Notre Dame looked slow, unathletic & passive tonight.

I felt all week that this game would be a loss for ND. I didn't think it would be in this fashion, but we ran into a perfect storm, literally. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, hard to imagine we forced Michigan to a quick three and out deep in their territory, block the punt and then all hell breaks loose after. It would've been nice had Lenzy just fallen on the ball after it squirted away from Jones, however, maybe he loses it as well. Trying to pick it up in a scrum wasn't the best idea. Despite the complete shitshow we witnessed, the remaining five games need to be one game playoffs. Can Kelly get the guys to focus like that? Will leadership emerge to focus like that? A 10-2 regular season record would be a complete overachievement by this team and I'd certainly take it. We all know the flaws, but the boys have to dig deep.

I am so fucking tired of watching Chris Finke and Ian Book play football.

BK will never be a great coach for many reasons, but one of them is he loves guys with low ceilings just because they're reliable.

There's no fucking reason Phil shouldn't be starting after being proven Book can't do anything against any average or above defense.

Finke is pointless.

I'm not really sure I'd call Book or Finke reliable at this point.

They ARE reliable though. You know EXACTLY what you're not going to get out of them. Every. Single. Time.

As someone who has coached collegiate football and is struggling to comprehend how they would play like they did last night, I will say taking a college student out of their routine such as having no classes can lead to this. I have seen it myself. You would think it would help but they stay up later, are less focused, etc... when they aren’t in school. It is the only plausible reason I can think of other than they just shlt the bed.

Yeah, they laid an egg but, come on, Oklahoma lays an egg and loses by a TD. UGA lays an egg and loses in OT. Clemson lays an egg and squeaks by UNC. ND lays an egg and gets beat by 50.

See the difference there?

Didn't Purdue blow out OSU a couple of years back? Wisconsin blow out Michigan a couple of weeks ago? See the difference here? It's college football, it happens. Is this just a perfect storm or a referendum on the season? I guess we will find out moving forward.

If you are correct about Phil that means the coaches see that he’s the better option at QB in practice yet are still going w/ Book. That doesn’t make sense. I agree Book needs to be replaced but I wouldn’t count on it until he costs ND another game b/c BK has already said the entire team & coaching staff lost the scUM game...not just Book.

Koon, I agree with you 100%. At this point there is no reason not to have PJ playing, Keys in the slot, McKinley and Lenzy split reps at the other outside WR position. They are shooting themselves in the foot by playing low ceiling guys.

Well said. We have to remember one thing: the human factor. It will always be there as long as humans play football. Once you break your disciplined routine, it takes a while to get back to it. That's why on the first day of running/working/any physical activity, you will feel out of shape and have soreness.

What’s crazy is I remember Kelly talking in an interview about how he got his Grand Valley teams over the top and winning championships. He said they started playing the best players, regardless of class. Yet, this is something he has not always done at ND, IMO.

Troy Pride is awful..

But he has sprinter speed!!! Yes he stinks and is never in a position to turn and intercept a pass and yet he is no different than any of our other DBs sans Crawford and Hamilton.

I really like Tariq Bracy, but the staff seems to have been moving on from him.

Also Crawford looked bad out there last night. Looked rusty, which is expected since he was out 4 weeks.
