I didn't have the numbers the other day when I disagreed with Piombino but I didn't think this was necessarily true that we lack explosive plays and in Jamie U's '6 Thoughts on a Thursday' article he explains that we've had 42 plays of 20 yards or longer which is the most for any team with 6 or fewer games played. We just don't have a lot of plays over 40 yards. Again, a TE avg 12/rec, a RB avg. 7/carry, and a WR avg. 15/rec. is pretty darn good.

https://irishsportsdaily.com/s/10773/6-thoughts-on-a-thursday

5 against L'ville
11 against NM
4 against Georgia
5 against Virginia
12 againsg BG
3 against USC

I counted 40 but this is the breakdown I found minus the two mystery plays.

Not sure if you're being facetious or not, but that's not true. We ran 38 rushing attempts to 26 passing attempts. It just feels like we threw more often because of how obvious it seemed that running it would have been the prudent decision.

Technically true but if you rewatch the game (which I did some time ago), you'll see we actually "called" more passes than runs. Think Kizer had like 15 rushes in the game, most were called passes where he scrambled. It was brutal.

No but I am sure somebody could probably look it up. I remember reading somewhere after the NM game that the Irish had something like 12 plays of +20 yards or more. And, iirc, just watching the BG game, I would say the Irish had close to 10 or more.

So you do admit you watch the Irish! Don't worry, we won't rat you out to your fellow Tide fans.

Everybody's stats (offense & defense) get skewed by the lesser teams they play, so you leave them in the equation. It all balances out.

That makes sense.

You...you re-watched that game?

What were you being punished for?

Penance. There is actually a condensed version on Youtube (or there was) which was under 20 minutes. Think I was looking up some other games. Easy way to watch a game.

Ha... I usually DVR the Irish game and watch it late Saturday nights or on Sunday. Those NBC camera angles and Flutie give me headaches.

Agree on the stats. I am not a big stat guy... just the one that counts wins and losses.

Oh... and beat Michigan for me. I would appreciate knowing that the Irish won prior to watching the game.

Watching the 2011 ND Michigan game right now, 3 things.

1) Tommy Rees read a field like a book. Watching him swivel his head, go through his progressions, and check down is unlike anything we've seen since.

2) This ND offense is loaded. Cierre Wood, Jonas Gray, Michael Floyd, Tyler Eifert, TJ Jones, Wow.

3) We're up 14-0 and driving. How the hell did we lose this game? There is something spooky about this place.

I always thought Tommy would be in the NFL if he had an arm. His field awareness was great. He would throw the occasional INT when he thought his arm was better than it was.

Simple
1. Our DB's played the worst defense in that game.
2. RZ TO's.
3. Fumble bounces right into Robinson's hands for an easy TD.

We were actually up 24-7 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Tommy played a great game, up until the costly fumble late. He did NOT cost us the game, though, he gets way too much blame for one mistake. He did enough for us to win, he even brought us back late to retake the lead. Our defense, and largely coaching (Took the foot off the gas and got too conservative) in the 4th is what blew that one. We should have never lost it being up 3 scores late like that.

Ah yes, the Gary Gray game. I remember having a joke at the end of the year that Gray played poorly that season because of an undiagnosed hernia. The doctor could never get him to turn his head to cough.

No way. The 2016 team had to be way better. 2011 Michigan wasn't as good as 2011 MSU, and 2016 Michigan beats them every day.

Well, in 2011 they went 11-2 and won the Sugar Bowl.

Michigan in 2016 went 10-3 and lost the Orange Bowl.

I'd probably take the 2016 team in a head-to-head, but in terms of accolades, 2011 accomplished more. That is Michigan's only NY6 bowl win this millennium. Though I will say that Michigan squad was the textbook definition of fluky.

That Va Tech team in the Sugar Bowl was not all that great though. MSU would have crushed them and Michigan would have been demolished vs that year's UGA team in the Outback Bowl (Sparty's bowl opponent). Purely a matter of who you get in the bowl.

Yeah so what I said was exactly that...
...which is 100% true. Their defense beats the hell out of bad teams, and gets torched by teams that aren't out-athleted (Ohio State, Florida, Wisconsin, PSU with Saquon Barkley, etc.).

So not sure what the confusion is, because it's all right there in what I said.

Go ahead and tell me who scUM has throttled this year.

Just finished the I.I. podcast.

Both Tim Prister and Pete Sampson pick Michigan. Omalley is not unveiling his pick until Thursday, but hinted as if it will also be Michigan.

They must also have missed the memo of how good ND is and how bad Michigan is.

Just finished today’s podcast & Sampson has followed the point spread & is now picking ND. O’Malley is picking ND to win, too. Prister saves his pick for his article but sounded like he was leaning towards an ND win.

Here’s what I’ve concluded after listening to multiple pods & fans on the scUM game....we all have PTSD from previous meltdowns in the Weis & BK 1.0 eras. I mean when someone says the “Tate Forcier game” or the “Gary Gray game” and we all immediately recognize them as the 2009 & 2010 implosions, it’s pretty bad.

Even Prister had to admit that he thought Book wouldn’t step up for no other reason than a gut feeling b/c bad things happen vs scUM in Ann Arbor. Sampson admitted something similar being bad analyses b/c it was based more on feeling of dread. That’s irrational fan stuff right there that we are used to reading on message boards. The Skunk Bears have really done a number on the psyches of ND fans & reporters.

They’re expecting an inch of rainfall Saturday night. While the inclimate weather will affect both teams does it nullify or downgrade the TO margin trend ND has coming into this game or make it more likelier that each team has more turnovers than what they’ve been averaging

Go ahead and tell me who scUM has throttled this year.

Their defense throttled the bad offenses they played.

Army - 200 total yards in regulation, 14 points.
Rutgers - 150 yards, 0 points.
Iowa - 250 yards, 3 points.
Illinois - 250 yards, 6 sacks, 12 TFL.

Their's a reason their defense is highly rated by advanced stats, and that's because they beat up on bad teams. Then they generally get burned by teams with elite athletes or position groups. Nothing about this is remotely complicated.

While not stated, I think he was referring to teams with decent offenses. None of those are that great.

Neither was the Florida State team that beat Michigan in the Orange Bowl.
