For the season as a whole, BYU's offense was amazingly average. They ran when you are supposed to run, passed when you are supposed to pass, played at around the same level versus good and bad defenses, and ranked 53rd in Rushing S&P+ and 53rd in Passing S&P+. Those numbers did improve a bit with Nelson behind center, but in general BYU lacked the big-play ability requisite for ending up with a Top 20-30 offense.

That likely won't change in 2012, with a similar cast of characters filling primary roles. Three of last year's top four running backs return , as do three of the top four wideouts, and the top four tight ends. Unless a newcomer to the two-deep, like receiver Mitch Mathews or running back Iona Pritchard, can add a big-play presence (and since both of them are rather large, they probably won't), BYU is going to remain what they were last season: a rather efficient offense that has to sustain drives to score.

Just found out I will be attending this game. Can't wait, haven't been to a game during the Kelly era yet. Going to be a long three months waiting for the trip.

If everyone is pretty much back, shouldn't they be significantly better? I'd be surprised if at least several players wouldn't make marked improvements from one year to the next.

Better at what they were already good at, yes. But Connelly makes a pretty good argument for why they probably won't be improving their weaknesses (pass defense, big-play offense, etc.)

Quesion for the Notre Dame fans. There is a lot of buzz around BYU these days about a new rivalry beginning between the two schools. We are all really excited to be playing so often in the next few years. How are all of the Notre Dame fans feeling about it? Is all of the excitement one sided, or do your fans want this to become a major rivalry game too?

Either way I'm excited about it having been a fan of both programs all my life.

The series has amazing rivalry potential, as our programs have a lot of similarities-- religious identity, tradition, independence, etc. I'd much rather play BYU on an annual basis than some of the other teams on our schedule.

Fighting Irish vs. Fighting Mormons. I dig it.

I would be in favor of dropping Boston College and picking up BYU permanently.

"This sig will not change until the Browns win the Super Bowl, so get REAL used to it."

The Browns are playing in Indianapolis that weekend also. We're considering going to that game while we're in the neighborhood.

rivalry or not...I hope that ND makes the trip to Utah every couple years for the foreseeable future ...saves on plane tickets to SB...

I like the BYU program...I am super torched there is talk of killing BYU-Utah...thats just silly. But I'd trade that for my Irish to come to town regularly...

I would LOVE to see BYU annually. I respect BYU enough to play them year in and year out. Not to mention you guys are not a bad team. I would appreciate if you guys always lose to us but stay strong! lol.

I am actually pumped for this BYU game. I am thinking its our slip up game but hope it is the moment we get over that "HUMP".

Best of luck on ya'll season BTW.

Because of this year's schedule, there's very little buzz about the game at this time. When you have rivals like USC, Michigan, MSU, Boston College and Stanford on your schedule, and then you add teams like Miami and Oklahoma, well, BYU gets kinda left out of the discussion a lot of the time (although we are VERY aware that BYU had a very good season last year and will be another difficult team on our schedule).

Now, you throw in a classic game or two, and this game will be on a lot of people's minds for the coming decade. I'll be at the game and am looking forward to it!

PSR does some indepth analysis. But I question their comment about the defense:

This will be a vintage B.Y.U. defense – vintage meaning like 2006, 1985, 1984, the glory days.

Their defense did put up some good numbers, they held 8 opponents to under 300 yards. Only 2 had over 400 yards, Utah with 481 and Utah STATE with 406.

BUT, the article earlier pointed out how weak their opponents were. According to Steele's Toughest Schedule for 2011 BYU's was 102nd out of 120.

ND is the highest rated team BYU will face. They're going to find the Irish are no Weber St.

that is what I have been saying for awhile when people talk about how scared they are about BYU, all of their stats are inflated against weak competition, it doesnt really mean much to me. They are overrated this year, mostly by the ND fanbase on forums.

I guess on paper we really have nothing to fear...but ask sam bradford '09 how they looked on paper...and how that came out...these guys do/did play a weaker schedule...but you can bet they will be fresh, and hardly nicked up...you can bet the will be flying around like wild dogs against us. You can bet they'll gamble in places they hadn't before...you can bet they will play like an academy in terms of effort, emotion, etc. If we turn the ball over multiple times or come out flat, we could easily lose this game.

I get what you are saying phgreek, but how can you predict 5 TOs or all around bad play? If we play well, we should get through this game pretty smoothly.

Those of you going to the game: Be polite and show respect to the BYU fans. Be helpful if some seem to be in need of directions or suggestions. Offer to take the photo of groups posing in front of the Dome, library, grotto, etc. so that they can all be in the shot.

After the game let the BYU fans know it was a good game, regardless of the outcome. Let them know that is was a pleasure to have them come to the game and visit the campus. Tell them that you hope they enjoyed their visit.

Be ambassadors of good will. Be classy!

(These requests don't apply to Hooligans from UM, USC, etc.)

I wasn't really predicting that...I said if we turn it over multiple times...and if we come out flat...we could easily lose.

To worry about TOs and coming out flat are legit concerns given our recent history w TOs and how our schedule sets us up to be flat against BYU...

I don't want it to happen, but those that worry have cause for concern...at least IMHO...
