Another hypothesis is the synthetic fields. Happened recently to my baby bro. He was running normally towards the ball carrier and his right foot got kind of slightly stuck into the synthetic field. Boom torn ACL. Missed most of his senior year in high school...

A closer look at Stanford's 41-31 upset of No. 6 USC, Hogan's big game - CBSSports.com

By Chip Patterson

...

The Trojans allowed the Cardinal to rack up 475 yards of offense and Kevin Hogan put together one of the best performances we've seen in the last two years from the senior quarterback. Hogan completed 18-of-23 passes for 279 yards and, most importantly, did not turn the ball over.

"He's what we expected this year," David Shaw told ESPN after the game. "Not that he's doing anything he hasn't done before. Great rhythm as a pocked passer, he did a great job of diagnosing their defense and getting us in the right play."

Stanford was wickedly efficient on offense. They punted twice all game and did not turn the ball over, maintaining possession for 39:25 and keeping the USC offense from getting into a rhythm.

"I've said from the beginning, we can be efficient running and efficient throwing," Shaw said.

I'm not sure if the Stanford upset makes me more wary of Stanford, less wary of USC, or neither. I thought Stanford would still play us tough, but after the loss at the beginning of the season I thought they did not look very good at all. Even if USC is still struggling at some positions, they have a lot of talent though and they whipped us pretty good last year. I'm not sure what to make of this upset.

The Stanford/USC game is classic "good news/bad news." Good news, USC may not be as tough as we thought. Bad news, Stanford may be a tougher nut to crack. I thought USC was overrated coming into the season, but it would have been nice to see the Irish be the team to knock them off their pedestal. Stanford is just all over the place; losing to NW then beating a top ten team. Let's hope the Cardinal are on a downswing when they play Notre Dame.

Just be totally logical and conclude that USC sucks....

Where did you find that? Despite their failure in week 1, I thought Hogan looked better than reported in the sporting media. He's certainly looked improved since then.

Would be a major factor moving forward if true.

The thing that catches my eye about the Stanford - USC article is what a crafty sombitch Jack Swarbrick is!

What a plan! To make the Irish quasi-members of the PAC-12 as well as the ACC!

The Trojans have to navigate the rest of its Pac-12 schedule without slipping, and likely will need a win at Notre Dame on Oct. 17 in order to stay both in the hunt for the Pac-12 title and a spot in the playoff.

Game is starting to look very tough

This won't be a walk in the park for sure, but I wouldn't read too much into what is happening tonight. Oregon State is worse than any opponent we play this year by a lot.

That theory will be tested tomorrow.

I think we do better against the run but Hogan will have better passing numbers.

I'd love to have Mccaffrey on our team right now. Captain obvious here.

Has anyone been to a game here yet? I'm coming up and would love to know where the buses drop off and all that. This will be my 10th game in my life and seeing the players before or after the game is something I have yet to experience

So....4-1 and they're seemingly the favorite in their final 7 games. Not bad for a team everyone proclaims is overrated every summer.

FPI has their closest remaining game being ND...and it gives Stanford a 61.4% chance.

Interesting schedule for them looks about as favorable as it can with Oregon falling bad.

10-15 UCLA
10-24 Washington
10-31 @ Washington State
11-7 @ Colorado
11-14 Oregon
11-21 Cal
11-28 ND
12-5 PAC 12 Championship

Playing them right before the Pac12 Championship could really work to our advantage. Say they end up 11-2 with losses to us and Northwestern, beating an undefeated Utah in the Pac12 championship.... I think we get the nod in that one due to timing and playing away.

This is why our season isn't a loss. There's a great chance we have the opportunity to beat the Pac12 champ with either Stanford or USC. Heck on a lower level it's looking great if we can handle Temple if they went on to win the AAC. This season has a long way to go and plenty of winning teams left on the schedule to make an impression.

We are the third highest ranked team with one loss behind Ole Miss and Bama (shocker!). SEC will only get one ticket and that will be at risk if they all end up with 2 losses and/or some 3 loss team sneaks in and wins the SEC championship.

We look the part. A one loss ND team will be hard to ignore, knocking the Pac12 out ourselves is exactly half of the battle needed to make room for us.

I think our only chance to make the playoff is for the Big 12 big wigs to cannibalize each other, hopefully with some ugly losses in there, and then one other Power 5 champ picks up at least 2 losses. TCU/Baylor schedules are so bad that one bad loss to a decent opponent would likely rule them out completely. Our schedule isn't looking quite as good anymore with GT shitting the bed along with Texas, but we could make it up if USC, Clemson, and Stanford all do well.

With Big 12 out of the picture we would just need hopefully one of the remaining four Power 5 teams to pickup 2 losses. That would be great if it happens to be a conference champion we played and beat. If not, the only other scenario where we couldn't make it in is if a conference sends more than one team. If LSU loses to Bama in a close game and both teams win out otherwise, they could both wind up in the playoff.

If we beat USC then they have 3 losses and are coachless so that win doesnt even look good so yeah we need them to win I guess. If we lose Saturday none of this matters.
