I really don’t think we’re talking enough about the fact UNC had 56 yards of offense in the second half. Not only are they an elite offense, but they’ve also been a second half team all year. I think they crossed to ND’s side of the field one time the whole half. I think I’ve said already a couple times this year that x game was the best defensive performance of the Kelly era. The second half here takes top of the list IMO.

Mac Brown on Ian

Honestly for as bad as they’ve been, you got to give the UNC defense credit for their performance today considering it was the first time all year they saw a Book.

I’ll say it again. Bracy is not bad by any means, but if you don’t think he’s the biggest weakness on a great defense after the last three games then we aren’t watching the same team.

I didn’t say he wasn’t the biggest weakness. Go read my posts leading up to this game and it’s pretty clear the secondary (especially the CB) concerned me.

We are definitely going to need to get TK back asap. Lugg was the definite weak point on the line, and that's including Correll's snapping problems

I haven’t had a chance to rewatch but will take your word for it. Lugg played well in relief last season. My hope is that both Correll & Lugg improve w/ more game reps these next two weeks.

Was he really? I don't have an eye for o-line play, so I defer to you all. Is it possible his supposed injuries had something to do with it? Or is he just not a guard?

Gutsy win by the Irish. Defense came up with stops, and Book came up with Mahomes-like plays. I was concerned when Hamilton was ejected, but Brown and Griffith played well. D had 6 sacks, and seemed like they could have had 3-4 more.

A lot of blitzes that blew right by Lugg. They were definitely targeting him. I definitely expected more from him, but hopefully it was shaking off the rust.

I did notice UNC's LBers penetrating a lot, but it seemed to me they were equal opportunity offenders in that case. Guess I'll have to give it a rewatch and keep an eye specifically on Lugg.

Fourth best offense in the country.

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ncaa/fplus/2020

An offense averaging 533.9 yds per game. Two RBs who each averaged >100 yds per game. We held them to 85 yds total. A Scoring Offense that averaged 43.5 that was held to 17. NC had 125 yds in their first two drives and 173 yds for the rest of the game. A Passing Offense that averaged 316 yds pere game held to 211 yds.

Probably going to be a strange take here, but I think the hit that Daelin put on Howell on UNC’s first score really had a lasting affect throughout the game. Howell still had some good plays after, but he just wasn’t crisp throughout the rest of the game. He came off the fire a little woozy, and honestly I think our front 7 was in his head the rest of the day. Then we just kept coming after him.

Just one snap right?

There were a few. 3 or 4 that bounced to Ian. He was hitting himself in the ass with the snaps. Crazy.

How about Book for snatching those up and still executing the play well?

One more year Ian.

The biggest takeaway I have from the NC and Clemson games is Notre Dame is fast.

The team speed that was lacking in previous years is here in spades. Ends beating backs to the edge, backers splitting gaps and playing downhill, backs that pull away in the open field.

All we need is Leenzy and Keys to get healthy and more involved.
The team will be complete.

I agree, but would emphasize the DL speed. The play that distinguishes this DL with previous DLs is when 91 tracked down the running back on a third and five?. 91 slightly lost outside containment but had the speed to catch the NC RB drop him for minimal gain. Also, Howell is a mobile QB but the speed of the DL limited his runs to small gains.

AWESOME pic.
This is the offense I've been begging Kelly to run for almost ten years. After seeing Stanford have success I knew we could do it with the athletes ND can get.

I've played, watched, coached, and ref'd teams that line up this way... some with a 'X' receiver on the end....

There are NUMEROUS plays that can be run out of this formation

I have to admit when the targeting call was made on Hamilton I was extremely nervous that might cost ND the game. Never did I imagine, the defense would hold that North Carolina offense out of the endzone with Hamilton on the sideline.

I also thought that missed holding call on their long pass in the first quarter might end up costly. Hinish was clearly grabbed as he broke free up the middle and that little extra time allowed the QB to get off the deep ball. Thought it was a joke the announcers didn't even bring it up too.

I had flashbacks to Tuitt being ejected vs Pittsburg back in 2013

I waited a few days to post this-earlier in the season i thought this was a loss-but early last week I posted that I was wrong this team is very very very good-just better than Carolina-Book should be in New York and if not the Heisman is a JOKE-to beat a very good team without 2 all america lineman out and loose an all american safety speaks volumes on how good they really are. Williams has been the shot in the arm that the program needed-he is relentless and the secondary backs arent much of a drop off-hats off to the running backs coach because the run HARD. Can they beat Clemson with their no1 qb-we will see-Clemson should have an emotional edge but this team will not flinch-you are going to have to beat them. We will see I say this Notre Dame team can beat them no matter who plays qb for Clemson-we will see.
