is it really more profitable for these big name schools like usc, texas, oklahoma and oregon to join a conference rather than go independent? is there much of a point to be in a conference when that conference is 20 or 22 schools?
I know it's extremely lucrative but the NFL sucks. And if people want to watch the NFL they'll watch the NFL. College football should stick - best it can anyway - to what makes college football unique (and vastly more fun), part of which is the fact that heavyweights have to play lesser opponents and don't always win.
I don’t see it like that. I think the money will be the ultimate level. Much like the parity created by the NFL. Sure they will be some programs run better but ultimately you get all the best players in this conference and play the games. The playoff becomes much more acceptable format instead of some arbitrary unknown process executed by people with agendas.Someone has to lose the games. And the teams that lose will be less valuable and then in this world kicked to the curb. So no I don’t believe that many teams are confident in the long term sustainability of it.
I have argues for a relegation style setup for several years now. This would be my ideal setup. The best answer (which will never happen) is four 16 team regional conferences with relegation to a corresponding regional 16 team feeder conference. Total of 128 teams.
Winner of each conference goes to the playoffs. Bottom 2 teams play to send the loser down to the feeder. Feeder champ moves up. Filters out the Maryland/Rutgers/Vanderbilt/Kansas types with SMU/UCF/Memphis of the world able to work their way up to the big boy table.
Would add a lot more interest to the middle of the pack.
Is this a joke or are you actually serious? Also all conferences should be regional for ESG purposes. To fight global warming we should minimize travel.
Sorry but this does not sound exciting to me. Part of the thrill of college football is the upsets and watching teams navigate their conference schedules and then having different teams from different conferences who have navigated their schedules throw It all in the ring for all the marbles. Watching the best teams beat up on each other and end up with basically everybody having a loss, with even the best teams having 2+ losses does nothing to move the sport forward for me. There has to remain minimally 3 competitive conferences if not 4 otherwise were basically watching what goes on in the pac12 every single year, just with a higher overall talent level.Bama

But…we already have the NFL of thats your bag. Why completely recreate it just with less talented players and teams.I don’t see it like that. I think the money will be the ultimate level. This is about Athletic Departments and school bank accounts, not about what you want or any other fan. They know they can milk this thing for a long time. I will watch ND under most circumstances, but I am not passionate at all about the NFL. But i will be a dying breed as kids today won't experience the things you or I did with ND football as a kid. The product will eventually suffer, but that timeline is so far into the future and after billions upon billions of dollars, that nobody really cares. But…we already have the NFL of thats your bag. Why does everyone think a statement has to be made already if they aren’t joining? Smarter to keep quiet regardless of the stance.Another day and still no official statement from Jack or anyone from ND regarding maintaining independence. I still think they are negotiating to join the B1G. Otherwise, a statement would have come out by now. All of college football is on pins and needles waiting on an announcement one way or another.
Because literally, every single time something happens like this a statement like this is shared. Why does everyone think a statement has to be made already if they aren’t joining? Smarter to keep quiet regardless of the stance.

Every ACC team that has a chance at another home wants out. The ACC is held together only because their incredibly bad contract and gor. Here is an intersecting tidbit fir whatever it’s worth:
247Sports’ Josh Pate reported on a Monday podcast that “there are conversations happening with folks at Clemson and folks in the Big Ten.”
“Everything that seemed impossible just a few years ago is now a possibility,” an industry source told McMurphy.
Clemson will not comment on the realignment reports, an athletics department spokesman told The State on Wednesday.
The silence is indeed telling. I do wonder how long we’ll be able to remain silent, though.Because literally, every single time something happens like this a statement like this is shared.
We are monitoring the landscape, but at this time we will maintain independence.
We may not join, but this is odd silence.
…That said I’m sure there’s a lot of conversations going on under the hood here we don’t know about yet.
Every moment brings a new rumor.
You hate to see it 😂Ha. Poor Miami.
Every moment brings a new rumor.
We're disagreeing a lot, but that's okay. If they decide not to join at this time I don't think it hurts their position in the future. ND will always be wanted. I can see a scenario where most of the dominos have fallen and one of the last is the cherry on top. Could turn into an epic battle between the B1G & SEC to see who can propose the best offer. The silence is indeed telling. I do wonder how long we’ll be able to remain silent, though.
Obviously Notre Dame should survey the field, assess what’s best for Notre Dame and not be rushed by those who seem to assume that if we didn’t join the Big Ten by Tuesday morning we aren’t joining. We only get one shot at this, we should do it right.
But there are a lot of other moving pieces here and at some point they will start moving. Thinking particularly of the Pac 12/Big 12 talks and how a potential merger there might impact other potential Big 10 joiners like Stanford, Washington and Oregon.
In other words while I’m all for dressing up like the pope and smoking in a lawn chair, I don’t want to see us do it so long that other good dance partners get pulled off the floor. That said I’m sure there’s a lot of conversations going on under the hood here we don’t know about yet.
Personally I think the B1G would prefer Clemson over Oregon if they fit the criteria, whatever that is today. More fertile recruiting ground and establishes a foothold in the south even if SC isn't a hotbed like FL or GA.Here is an intersecting tidbit fir whatever it’s worth:
