This probably belongs in the Theology thread, but most parishes don't offer any confession during Holy Week here. At least the ones I've seen; my priest says that Holy Week is just too busy.

My parish offers confessions 12 hours a day Monday-Thursday of Holy Week, and for a straight 24 hours on Good Friday. Then the whole parish shuts down for a week after Easter to give everyone time to recuperate.

Had no idea the damage when I posted my lame ass attempt at GOT humor in all this. it was and is horrible timing. didn't realize the extent or hadn't seen video. i'm an idiot. note to self: think before posting!! really hope they can rebuild those topworks to their former glory.

Lucky you. My parish is not a common offender of infrequent confession times, so I was surprised to find that no times were offered.

That's definitely the norm, and will only become moreso as the vocations crisis gets worse.

Speaking of which...we had an priest here in rural SW Indiana that was from India. The community completely embraced him but he was transferred last year to another parish. He told me this past weekend that his green card application was denied and he's not sure how much longer he will be able to stay. Wouldn't you think the bishop should be able to get involved with this somehow?

We have 3 priests at my parish, Austin is actually doing alright (thanks to the Aggies, the only thing they're good for).

Accidental or Intentional?

Way too early to actually tell. Everything at this point would just be rumors. Best to just pray for the first responders' safety and for as much of it to be saved as possible rather than speculate and have whatever harm comes from that.

Interesting. Could this have something to do with the migrants then? It sounds like a previous fire to a church in France was also intentionally set.

[EDIT] Judging by those that responded with "Smiley Faces," I'm going to say yes.

Or it could just be the same people who like "RIP" messages on facebook, which is people who don't know what they are doing.

For both cases, best to apply Hanlon's razor in this scenario until more information is known.

Lots of speculation that the art and relics weren't in there to begin with, to keep them safe during the restoration.

This would make sense if they weren't destroyed... hard to imagine everything being saved under these circumstances...

On the news they did say that several statues (I think it was 16) were removed for the first time in century just a few days ago so the renovations could continue. So at least some of it was out, though it did sound like there were still some things inside that they had to (and apparently did) save.

I read that a lot of it wasn't removed. They specifically were doing whatever renovations they had going on to make sure the church remained open.

There are thousands of those reactions. I said smiley faces, when I should have said "laughing faces." Despicable, honestly. We hear about Muslim tolerance, but you don't see large numbers of Christians rejoicing when tragedy befalls them. There were thousands of those heinous reactions to the church burning. I went back and looked at Facebook responses to the New Zealand Mosque shooting, and there were only dozens of the same reaction from the thousands of total reactions. One side is certainly more tolerant of the other.

I agree with you that speculation at this point will not help but....

It is hard to not be on the lookout when you read things like this.

I haven't even looked that much but did see one comment section attached to a basic story on this and it was filled with everyday waspy anti church types having a good ole time like this is some communal bonfire for them... pretty sad.

As a fellow firefighter, that fire is a butt clincher and one you only imagine of going to. The fire tactics on this have to be 100% defensive if the roof collapsed. Unless the Almighty God is using his powers to help, I can’t see anyway possible anything the inside could be saved.

Prayers to the firefighters there and may God watch over them and Notre Dame.
