One small thought on Baylor being obviously better:

We lost the game on the scoreboard basically in one quarter, the first. But when you look at the stats, we outrebounded them in the first half and were equal or better on all the statistics except one --- they were crazy hot and we were abnormally cold.

Now one can still attribute that to Baylor and Coxe if one wants to, but i think that a case can be made for "wrong game/ wrong time." What if one of our girls was cookin' in the first half, and one of theirs wasn't quite so hot? After-all, we proved that we could play with them in three of the four quarters and a bit better.

Baylor won the game, that's clear. But who wins the ten-game series? I'm still betting that we figure them out better than they figure us. That doesn't stop the trophy going into their display case, but I can see a ghostly vision of it in ours.....

We started something like one for 13 from the field. Some of that was the way they were defending us, and Cox. Some of it was nerves/bad luck/whatever. Either way, agree we were starting to sort them out in the second half. Also agree Cox going down helped us a lot. She was big and long but also quick enough to play on the perimeter and that really messed with our offense.
Either way, great comeback, great season. Too bad it ended the way it did but they've got no reason to hang their heads. On to the next one.

Wow, I'm trying to process how we can possibly be a top 10 team next year. I hope I'm just over thinking this but when has a team ever lost all 5 starters and still won their conference let alone made the Sweet 16?

Based on what we saw from the bench this year, I really hope the freshmen are as good as advertised. And that Katlyn is ready to go. Then we have Abby and Vaughn who I felt did very well of the bench. That leaves Dani and Nixon as our first 2 of the bench. Please tell me that group is a good lineup!

Here's our scholarship situation next year:
C/PF- Vaugn, Cosgrove, Patterson, Brunelle
SF- Prohaska/Brunelle
SG/PG- Gilbert, Peoples, Nixon

Only 8 scholarships total next year- I wonder if we try to get a grad transfer of some sort.

Could see us going extra big at times with Brunelle or Patterson sliding down to the 3/SF position.

I think it'll be rough at the beginning, but could see us come into our own at the end of season and be a tough team to beat. That's if we don't get the injury bug. Any type of injury and we could possibly fall out of the top 25.

Not going to be what we are used to the last 8-9 years.

Occasionally, particularly in Womens BBall, a freshman shows up who is just better than almost everybody else on day one --- Brianna Stewart was that person for Connecticut six years ago and they won four fairly uncontested national championships. On a slight step down (but not a lot) Skylar Diggins was that person at ND. Having Brunelle be that kind of player is what ND has to hang its hopes upon --- and who knows if Peoples could be that sort of player also.

This team was supposed to be going into next year with Jackie, plus Ali Patberg, plus Erin Boley coming back. None of that is real if Jackie goes. But those three would have formed a powerful base of a "new" team.

Unless Muffet has something really spectacular afoot regarding transfers, or Brunelle is Stewie 2.0 and/or Peoples is Skylar 2.0, we are in for a very long "patient" season of rebuilding. I believe in miracles, but even Jesus needed something substantial to make the Canaan Wine.

With 8 scholarship players only next year, I don't understand why Muffet didn't target more recruits knowing you would at least lose 4 players. Isn't the amount of scholarship allowed 13? You don't want to run into a situation next year where a few players get injured and you are down to 6 players again.

Don't you have a rock to crawl under? You're seriously toxic.

Girls are kicking ass all season long, you're nowhere to be found. Potential perceived negative? You're splattering the board with paragraphs of toxic negativity.

At what point does IE say (via moderators) you're no longer welcome in this community?

I'd vote for today, but I don't hold much sway around here

All the best to Jackie on declaring.

Baylor with two bigs in the post was able to completely neutralize Bri and Jess. With one big we can run circles around them, with two both sides of that circle are covered pretty well. I agree that Cox going down made all the difference in coming the rest of the way back. Her replacement may have had the stats but their defense was nowhere close when it comes to altering shots and denying looks.

Great group of ladies - so great for the game. Frustrating they couldn't put a full game together but also amazing to see how they could almost win a championship playing one half of ball three games in a row. Muffet made it an exercise in Women's Suffrage - really added some pressure IMO. Paid off against -UCONN. After UConn I felt we were playing with house money.

Also - Turner was an inch away from getting a block on that dribble drive giving Baylor the lead. Had she stayed JUST A BIT deeper in the post instead of drifting toward the FT line she would have closed that window and easily blocked that attempt (twice ice-ish). Amazing play that you have to tip your hat to the opponent though - Jackson was 13-25 on the night and sure didn't feel like she missed 8 shots to me. So much attention on the bigs and she was quietly phenomenal.

Feel for Arike though.

In the sense of providing opportunity to women in sports - how is she not using all of her scholarships? Is there something in the water in South Bend that makes our basketball coaches unable to fill a roster?

That said - Brunelle and Peoples are high probability four year difference makers. We have talent that needs to grow up fast but a serviceable core for Muffet to mold into an ACC contender. Also hard to imagine that she does not have an eye/ear on a transfer or two to fill in a pretty big void left by this amazing group. In my opinion - I think a good season would be a top 4 ACC team and Sweet 16 with transfers needed to go much further than that.

Even though we will only have 8 (at least at this moment in time), 5 of the scholarship players are McDonald's All Americans. Vaughn and Prohaska aren't included in that list and they are the two locks to start and make a difference (at the current moment in time). So certainly the talent is there to make some noise and be competitive. Hopefully Muffet can get a big talented class for 2020

I've followed along in this thread all year without any comments, watched the final four, and was stunned by both the amazing comeback, and the way the game ended. Couldn't be more proud of the ladies... THAT close to a repeat.

One gripe I have about the outcome: With fouls to give, I would have had the girls fouled whoever had the ball (in this case Jackson), before being able to drive to the rim. As mentioned though, Turner was inches from another fantastic late game block.

It will be interesting to see MM adjust to the youth again. I don’t doubt she enjoys the process of coaching her players up. She wouldn’t be as great as she is if she didn’t. I wonder how long her assistants will remain with her.

I'm hoping Niele will take over when she retires. I realize we may not want an unproven head coach but if they plan it carefully and Muffet let's Niele take on a lot more duties her last couple of years it could work. She's a great recruiter and the players love her.

That's of course of she retired in the next 5-7 years. If not, I doubt Niele will still be an assistant. She might not anyway but I can dream.

So when Muffet replaces Jack at AD in a few years right? Were her 10% of ADs being women comments prophetic? I don't see her giving up coaching any time soon - she is at the top of her game and looks 110% invested to me.

Pretty sure that has never happened before. I don't even think UCONN had that happen during their dynasty run.

Maybe even more impressive UConn had 4 of the top 6 picks in the 2002 draft and I don't know if they all started but it looks like Tennessee had 5 drafted in the 2008 draft.

Historic. A watermark. Congrats, ladies! All your hard work on the hardwood and in the classroom is admirable.

The Aces have now had the top pick in the last three years. Last year's top overall pick, A'ja Wilson, who made $52,564 in her rookie season. The top four picks in the WNBA draft last year made just over $50,000 and they sign non-negotiable, three-year deals

The average salary is $72,000. The veteran maximum is $115,000. Playing in Europe or China a player can make ten times that. Wilson is playing for a Chinese team in the offseason and making at least $400,000 there. (Maya Moore had made that with the same team previously, while Wilson's salary has not been disclosed.)

The WNBA pays around 20 to 30 percent of its revenue to players while the NBA pays 50 percent to its players. The players can warn the league by Oct. 31 if they want to opt out of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, which would then expire after the 2019 season.

Tough decision to leave early, but with a season under her belt, if the players opt out of the CBA, Young will have options, including finishing any work on a ND degree.

she should take a course in Chinese...they all should.

I'm not sure when she injured her knee. Maybe it was so early in the season that it didn't count towards eligibility. Posted good scoring stats her first two years though.

I thought she injured the knee at the tail end of her Soph campaign.
