Notre Dame men’s basketball head coach Mike Brey’s in-home visit with 2015 New York guard/forward Matt Ryan couldn’t have gone much better.
“It was a great visit,” said the 6-foot-7, 210-pounder from New Rochelle.
“What Coach Brey had to say about Notre Dame in general and the opportunities that I would have there, not only on the basketball court, but when I’m done playing basketball. Notre Dame has a lot of things that branch outside of basketball. If I go there, he expects me to be ready as a freshman and make a big impact. He expects me to make the ACC First Team All-Rookie Team as a freshman.”
Ryan, who also has offers from schools like West Virginia, Clemson, Creighton, Arizona State, Boston College, Iowa State and is receiving interest from several others as well, was especially excited to hear what Brey thought of his potential.
“That’s what I like,” Ryan said. “He said he’s going to push me to do that and I really appreciated that.”
The junior shooter visited South Bend last September and has plans to return again this fall.
“I’m supposed to be taking an official visit Sept. 6th, when they play Michigan,” Ryan said.
“Last time, it was just me and my dad. This time it’ll be my sisters, my mom and my little brother. We’re just going to take in the atmosphere, obviously meet with the coaches, meet with all of the players again. It’ll definitely be a cool experience for the whole family to be out there.”
Ryan doesn’t have any other officials planned at this point, but plans on taking others.
“That’s the only one set up as of now, but schools I’m still considering for official visits would be Stanford, North Carolina, Duke, Michigan, Wisconsin, Virginia. Arizona State is still recruiting me hard, Creighton is still recruiting me hard,” he said.
Ryan expects to take all five of his officials, but isn’t completely sure.
“As of right now, I think that’s something I’m going to do, but I can’t say that’s a definite yet,” he said.
Ryan is honored to be recruited by some of the nation’s top programs.
“It’s an extreme honor,” he said. “I think any basketball player in the whole country would tell you all of the hard work they put in through elementary school, middle school and high school is to be recruited at the highest level. That’s everybody’s goal.
“I’m achieving goals every day. I’m living a dream right now. This is going to be the hardest decision of my life, but at the same time, it’s going to be the easiest decision of my life because I don’t think I could go wrong anywhere.”
Early opportunities will play a major role in Ryan’s final decision and he confirmed that at this point, Notre Dame is his leader.
“I think definitely the layout of the roster, I think that’s going to play the biggest role. Where is the most playing time available my freshman year? That’s going to be the biggest factor.”
