Forgive me for being out of the loop, it's been too depressing for me to follow like we all normally do, but I must have missed it... did ND replace Longo already?

Serious question. You think by hiring the SnC from IMG of 2 years, who has no other ties down there, is them (ND) just trying to put a foot in the door and build relationships?

Not saying that ND isnt trying to make something happen there, I just dont necessarily believe DB would be the key to the Porsche.

Or am i misunderstood?

You don't build relationships by hiring the other guys staff away. Business 101

I'm not sure it's being overplayed, considering we're also allegedly having practice down there. We're clearly investing in the relationship between IMG and Notre Dame.

No, but I think hiring him coupled with ND having spring practice down there and our yearly emphasis on recruiting the school shows ND really gives a shit about IMG. I don't think he was hired strictly because of his link to IMG; but I sure do think hiring him adds to ND's relationship down there and helps recruiting. How could it hurt? With the fact that a lot of recruiting is simply about comfort and trust -- and our S&C is one thing prospects consider and has previously been a negative -- there's no way his hire isn't a net positive with kids that are currently sophomores/juniors and like him (or, at minimum, have familiarity with him).

A new poster hinted this morning that the Strength and Conditioning coach from IMG is going to be the new S&C coach at ND. We figured it out through his hinting. It sounds like he may be an assistant or part of a team of S&C coaches. But this is good news in my mind.

My thoughts exactly. Great post. So whats the consensus thought on if he will be an assistant or head S&C??

Call Me Truuuu should be giving advice to Kelly!

Hello
Was thinking about PMing you because i knew youd figure it out, and i obviously dont wanna put it out there and things go wrong for Dave.

But i gotta ask, howd u figure it out?

The text wasn't about anything today, it's from a week ago. Someone with the name "PANDFAN" on ISD made a post and they thought it was you. ISD is touchy about their info being shared here -- and they thought it might be you and they know about the 247 issue -- so they texted me.

Not trying to throw shade and I missed your "detective work" earlier entirely... wasn't at a computer this morning...

Moral of the story -- clip my screenshots...

Do not think he is the head guy in charge of football. Not precisely sure what his role is, but I think it's to help "modernize" a lot of stuff with the way ND approaches S&C.

Thanks, I'll let them know. And to be clear, you've done a good job recently and I really wasn't trying to bust your balls about anything. Sorry. That was unintentionally a total dick move.

But you do know you've caused us mods some heartburn on here in the past, so I hope you understand haha...

Pretty standard for ND football, always playing catch-up. God forbid we actually lead the way in anything.

IMG is cutting edge technology wise with physical preparation. I'd like to learn some more about him, but he was definitely exposed to high level training while he was there. I have to do some research.

That's all fine and dandy, but when is the program going to invest in the relationship between football players and not being soft, out of shape under-achievers?

I hope this guy is legit, and the IMG connection is just a perk, not a selling point.

Those are pretty harsh words bro. I'd say some fell into that category but there's hard nose guys in great shape as well on this squad.

So it only took Kelly seven years to realize the S&C was lacking. Or to be fair, it only took four years when Kelly noted that after being trounced by Bama that at least he knew what ND needed to do to compete with the best.

To fair, it seems like they were all kind of bros. It would be hard to fire all your best buddies, especially if you had a 10 + year history of success with them. I get that it's a business, but I can empathize to a degree.

I tried to make clear that I think it's more of the latter.

And to play devil's advocate... even if he wasn't ostensibly a great value add as an assistant (which he is) people make hires all the time for ulterior motives and have it work out (which ND isn't)... just look at what Michigan has done with hires like "Team Mom" and HS coaches from NJ to aid recruiting and what dividends it has paid. That's not what ND is doing here, but if they were it wouldn't necessarily be a stupid move.

I'm not sure it was even that cut and dry at first. To me, Kelly's earlier teams were a huge step ahead of Weis' teams in the 4th quarter the first few years. We have been severely lacking in this department for a long time, and Longo seemed like a step up at the time.

Considering this is a coaching changes thread, I'll sum up what I think of this issue right now.
-With Long, I think we about break even in terms of losing Sanford. We won't really know if he's an upgrade or downgrade for a year ie see how he recruits and see how well our Offense plays.

- With Elko we get a major upgrade in scheme, coaching and OBVIOUSLY recruiting.

- We have a definite upgrade at ST with Polian, plus he should help us with a few recruits especially in California and maybe Hawaii.

-If we get the rumoured hires in S&C, we should definitely see an improvement. Something was really not working regarding Longo.

-Long should certainly help out our TE's. Not sure how much time he'll have with them but Quinn will probably assist him with our very talented group.

-Sanford will be missed as QB coach but we'll probably see a QB hire and Kelly always gets involved there and has been with Wimbush 2 years.

- Still haven't heard anything about WR coach yet. Denbrock will be missed. I really hope we get a Homerun hire here that has good recruiting connections. He was solid in the Chicago area and California.

- Still not sure if our DL play was due to lack of talent or Gilmore or both but 3 sacks = you're fired. I really hope Elston gets those boys going in Elko' new scheme. I'm worried about our players, not so much Elston.

- I think Lyght is one of our biggest assets as a coach and recruiter and having Elko help coach up our safeties will help strengthen our young DB's even more. Super confident here.

Not a stupid move at all. It'd be a part of the game we could play, to some degree. Don't need to hire girlfriends to our admin offices or anything of that nature.
