Mike Elko: Sources tell FootballScoop there have been overtures from other programs; but sources tell us Wake Forest defensive coordinaor Mike Elko is likely to wind up in South Bend.

ND to interview internal candidate Elston tomorrow...just enough time for Phil knight to intervene for the ducks...if Elko is ready, just sign him...GEEZ!

OR more likely Elko, like any of us, likes being recruited and wants to see what Oregon or Florida has to say before he commits here... you never just say yes to the first girl who asks u to the dance, you check out all your options and pick the hottest one

Actually they did kind of shut down Louisville. The score is misleading. It was 12-10 Wake at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Then Wake kept giving the ball to Louisville in their own territory. Out of Louisville's 4 possessions in the 4th quarter, 2 started in WF territory, 1 at the Louisville 48 and one at their 35. Plus there was a pick six in there that distorts the score further.

Correct. I watched that game and for three quarters WF held Louisville's offense down as well as any defense I saw this year. Aggressive, sound defense.

Just can't see him at Oregon. He's been an east coast, midwest guy far so long. Went to college at Penn.

ND COACHING CHANGES 2016

ND COACHING CHANGES 2016

Haven't been following it much. What's great about Elko? WF didn't exactly shut down Louisville or Clemson, allowing more points than our fired DC when we played them last. What am I missing?

What's great is his name is NOT Elston, and he's not part of the current establishment. He's an outsider.

Guess you can say the endearment towards him is the same one lots of people felt for Trump on Election Day.

Maybe Elko will "drain the swamp" of shitty tackling and uninspired play!!!!!!

Maybe he will MAKE ND DEFENSE GREAT AGAIN!!!!!!

Whoever we get as a DC will have some fairly good talent much of which simply hasn't been put in position to maximize their ability. We need a new defensive philosophy and scheme to create more pressure, allow our play makers make plays and cut down on giving up big plays. We need some true sophomores to really emerge this year ie Daelin, Kareem, Love, Vaughn and also we need some veterans to really step up starting with Tillery, Tranquil, Bilal etc. If we can do this I honestly think we can get back to 10-2. I have a ton of confidence in our offense. I think Kelly will tighten up play calling and I think Wimbush is going to be dynamic. I had a look at his HS highlight film last night and he is a dynamic play maker. If we don't improve defensively we could certainly be looking at another sub .500 season though. I truly think this.

I still think we bring the New Zealand rugby players in to teach some serious tackling skills. Finish it off with some hacka dancing.

Wow, this would be amazing.

IMO, the 3 coaches that need to go, in order:

Longo,

Gilmore,
Booker.

This would mean Gilmore and Booker were taken care of, assuming the DL coach would still coach DL and not move to something else.

Dave Cohen Bio - Wake Forest Football - WakeForestSports.com

In 1999, Cohen joined head coach Dave Clawson's first-year staff at Fordham and spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator, associate head coach and linebackers coach. Following the 2001 season, Cohen returned to Delaware for four seasons and helped the Blue Hens to the FCS national championship in 2003 with a 40-0 shutout of Colgate in the title game. Delaware went 15-1 that season en route to the national title. He was named the I-AA National Defensive Coordinator of the Year by Football Monthly.

Following his four-year stint at Hofstra, Cohen became the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Western Michigan in 2010. In 2011 the Broncos' defense was ranked 10th in the nation in turnovers gained with 31, was sixth in red zone defense and first in the nation in fourth down defense. Three of his players earned All-Mid-American Conference honors with Drew Nowak earning All-America status.

In 2012, Cohen took over the linebacker duties at Rutgers and coached one of the top defensive units in school history. The Scarlet Knights finished fourth in the nation in scoring defense (14.2 points allowed per game), tied for ninth in turnovers gained (32) and 10th in total defense (311.6 yards per game). Linebacker Khaseem Greene earned Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named an All-America after making 136 tackles and forcing six fumbles. Green was a fourth round pick of the Chicago Bears in the NFL Draft.

In 2013, Cohen coordinated a Rutgers defense that ranked third in the nation in run defense.

Cohen is reunited on the Wake Forest staff with defensive coordinator Mike Elko. Elko served as the defensive coordinator at Hofstra from 2006-08 under Cohen.

Interesting, Cohen was previous ex-DC for Rutgers before his time at WF. Was accused of bullying and verbal abuse by a player but was ultimately cleared. Hope he's able to establish some sort of relationship with East Coast recruits. All but disappeared since Diaco left (with the exception of the Ademilola twins from NJ).

...Thank God...at least it appears they did what they could to get a decent DC. Worried they were gonna hold everything up in order to interview internally. That should have been done weeks ago and killed the external search if an internal candidate was the man.

If anyone cares to read...it's unclear to me what happened. It sounds like Cohen called him soft and a p-word during study hall and other people piled on and then the player quit? Also note that this followed up Mike Rice's investigation. He was their bball coach who was throwing balls at players, pushing them and using gay slurs.

He's coached the DL the last four years at WF. Most of these guys are capable of coaching different positions. Elston started out for us on DL then moved to LB.

One interesting point of note... Gilmore has 7 years of special teams coaching experience, and has also coached RBs and played/coached LBs.

It wouldn't surprise me that if Elko brings in the DL coach he likes that Gilmore is retained as a special teams coach + some other capacity. I'm also interested to see if Elston would stay, and what happens to Lyght given that Elko coaches safeties. I really hope we keep Lyght as a cornerbacks coach, because I've been super impressed with the CBs he signed last year and how he coached them up as true freshmen after BVG stopped asking them to do impossible shit.

Are we expecting Urban to offer Elston a "title" (like Alford) to try to lure him away? He wouldn't be offered the DC position at OSU right?

Based on what I'm hearing regarding the financial terms of the deal offered by ND to Mike Elko, I find it nearly impossible he turns it down

From twitter. Fairly certain he covers Florida State and covers the ACC a bit.

I'm quite certain Elston will remain as LB coach and recruiting coordinator. He's been with Kelly 13 years and he's very happy at ND. Also would expect Lyght to remain as CB coach with Elko handling safeties.
