Heat is a good call tho, that was a huge cast obviously.

Watched Sabotage with Arnold. Pretty decent action film. Better than expected.

Watched How The West Was Won on TCM. Outstanding western and IIRC won an academy award. The number of major stars in the movie is mind boggling.

Henry Fonda
Jimmy Stewart
John Wayne
Gregory Peck
Debbie Reynolds
George Peppard
Eli Wallach
Lee J Cobb
Walter Brennan
Many more

Today I doubt you could get 3 or 4 major stars to agree to make a movie together.

To be fair, only Fonda, Stewart, Wayne, and Peck were A-listers. The rest, though well known, were never really top flight talent. Everyone else listed was really a strong character actor. The first 4 on that list are the only "stars" the true sense of the word.

Not arguing any cast points made, just adding to the dialogue here... but I'll point out BtF again... If there is another movie with a cast like this I can't think of it:

Sean Connery
Michael Caine
Gene Hackman
Dirk Bogarde
Robert Redford
Anthony Hopkins
James Caan
Ryan O'Neal
Laurence Oliver
Elliot Gould

and ton of other recognizable actors, if not huge names... like Denholm Elliot just for an example...

Just crazy to think they got all of them in one movie even if some, like Hopkins, were not huge yet.

Keep in mind that all of these people were basically in supporting roles, and were paid accordingly. Sure, the actors got fat checks, but since none of them were the lead they didn't get leading man cash. The studio pulled the same thing that they did with "The Longest Day"; make a war epic with a star-studded cast of supporting actors and no one gets paid to be the lead.

First of all, I disagree that the list above is comparable to How the West Was Won's cast. Not even close.

Secondly, how about Ocean's 11?

Matt Damon
George Clooney
Brad Pitt
Julia Roberts
Andy Garcia
Casey Affleck
Scott Caan
Elliott Gold

or Ocean's 12?

Matt Damon
George Clooney
Brad Pitt
Julia Roberts
Andy Garcia
Casey Affleck
Scott Caan
Elliott Gold
Don Cheadle
Catherine Zeta-Jones

or the Expendables

Dolph Lundgren
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Jean-Claude van Damme
Bruce Willis
Chuck Norris
Wesley Snipes
Jet Li
Harrison Ford
Jason Statham
Terry Crews.

Or Heat

Al Pacino
Robert De Niro
Val Kilmer
Tom Sizemore
Jon Voight
Ashley Judd
Natalie Portman
Danny Trejo
Jeremy Piven

I don't think you're getting my point. For instance take the movie Heat. Trejo, Piven and Sizemore are great actors. But you don't see them making a lot of movies where they are the lead. I'm talking about actors that have or had long careers where they were considered cream of the crop "A" listers. Not actors who were ht for a couple of years and then started taking supporting or lessor roles. Dolph Lundgren and Danny Trejo don't even come close. Oceans 11 comes close, but Scott Caan isn't an "A" lister. That gets you to seven.

BTW, did you see War Dogs yet? Opinion?

Not all of the people you listed would be a listers today either. They were in a time where 5 or so movies came out a year, there weren't big blostbuckers like today. Also, you're dead wrong on Piven. He has been the lead in several movies.

We could keep going too. Add Pacino to Oceans 13 and then look at the cast of Valentines Day. All a listers in that one. You can keep arguing an invalid point, but stars are just as willing if not more, than in the past to collaborate.

Saw John Wick 2

I think the first was more intense, but this was very good. Left it open for a sequel, but done so that it doesn't beg for it.

5 days, 5 Best Picture nominees.

Hacksaw Ridge
Moonlight
Hell or High Water
Arrival
Lion

Hacksaw and Moonlight stand above that group. I'm looking forward to rewatching Manchester and La La Land to see how I group the top contenders. Right now, I have Manchester, La La Land, and Moonlight as the 3 best in the group, with the nod to Manchester.

I have Fences tonight, Hidden Figures tomorrow, Manchester on Friday, and La La Land on Sunday to finish off Regal's Best Picture Film Festival.

Saw Fences and Hidden Figures, that makes all 9 Best Picture Nominees. My super duper definitive ranking:

1. Monster Trucks
2-9. They're all crap compared to the cinematic masterpiece of Monster Trucks

Real Ranking:

1. Manchester by the Sea
2. Moonlight
3. La La Land
4. Hacksaw Ridge
5. Hell or High Water
6. Fences
7. Arrival
8. Lion
9. Hidden Figures

My thoughts. I don't know why Hidden Figures was nominated. I suppose I really do, but it's just not worthy of consideration, especially in a stacked year like this. Also, why was Viola Davis nominated for Best Supporting Actress? She should've gotten the nod for Best Actress. I'm rewatching Manchester tonight and then La La Land on Sunday and I'm looking forward to them both.

My Award Winners

Best Actor - Casey Affleck
Best Actress - Viola Davis (forget the actual nominees, she should win, also I haven't seen any besides Emma Stone)
Best Supporting Actor - Mahershala Ali phenomenal performance.
Best Supporting Actress - Naomie Harris (Moonlight is great guys, really really good)

Cinematography all around was great this year. Just amazing. I'd give it to Moonlight though.

I watched "No Country for Old Men" for the first time the other night.

Great movie. Wonderfully entertaining with tremendous characters.

Really gets across that "doesn't matter what you do, the universe has a plan, and it's probably not great for you" feeling.

I'm talking about the cream of the crop, not just a lot of very good actors. The only movie that comes close recently that I can think of is "The Departed" with Nicholson, Damon, Caprio and Wahlberg and that's just four.

Those I listed were in high demand, demanded top salaries and were extremely popular at the box office.

A movie today would have to a cast something like this to be comparable IMO:
Jack Nicholson
Robert DeNiro
Matt Damon
Leonardo Caprio
Tom Cruise
Mark Wahlberg
Bradley Cooper
Al Pacino
Anthony Hopkins
Denzel Washington

Watched the second debacle of Tom Cruise in Reacher. Unwatchable Just purely terrible relying on Cruise's acting alone.

TCM has been showing Oscar winning movies all month. For those of you who don't need all of the special effects and still enjoy great acting that stands on its own, I recommend "They Were Expendable" and "The Thin Man". Both solid movies. The Thin Man did so well, they made four additional movies creating the first "Movie Franchise".

Went to Clowes Hall and saw the play "Jersey Boys". This wasn't the original cast, but it was outstanding. My wife was never a fan of The Four Seasons, but she was standing and whistling at the end. Highly recommend it.

Yeah that's an excellent play. The gang activity at the beginning is hilarious.

Logan is amazing. It actually earned it's R rating. Hue Jackman and Patrick Stewart knock it out of the park. This is the first comic book movie that's ever made me choke up. It's also probably my favorite CBM since Guardians. Perfect sendoff to Jackman.

I didn't get the connection, but that might have been because I didn't get to see much of it. We had a bunch of late arrivals in our aisle causing me to stand up four or five times.

I watched RiffTrax's (the old MST3K crew) send up of "Stone Cold." The movie was an early 90s action vehicle starring Brian Bosworth. I like the MST3K format better; not having the shadows on the screen is a bit off-putting. It's also interesting that "Stone Cold" was a major studio release that had a bit of a budget and a recognizable supporting cast (Lance Henrikson, William Forsthye). As one of the Riff Trax guys quipped "Man, they actually spent some money on this movie." I guess Hollywood thought the Boz was going to become a bankable 2nd tier action star. Hey, the guy had more charisma than Steven Seagal on screen and was easier to understand than Van Damme, so maybe the idea wasn't so ridiculous.

I saw Beauty and the Beast with my wife and children today. I have to say that it was a very good movie and I really enjoyed it.
