Dude next to me was trying to stay strong, but he just couldn't hold it in; started full-on sobbing. That last duet with Miguel and Coco is brutal.

Yeah I held it together right until Coco SPOILERS

What's sad about The Lion King ending?

come on guys not nearly as sad as the opening of UP, COCO was a happy movie
Up is sad and good. The Good Dinosaur is sad and terrible. I won't watch Inside Out because I've seen spoilers and I'm convinced it's the saddest of the bunch.

Inside Out really isn't the saddest, though you might be more affected by a few actions of the daughter. Up deals with real loss; Inside Out only flirts with it

I don't think Inside Out was sad at all. Nothing even close to the opening of Up.

I couldn't relate to "Inside Out" because it's a movie geared towards a female audience. Having gone through both a miscarriage, and watching my grandmother slowly fade away, "Up" and "Coco" hit incredibly close to home.

Really? I thought Dunkirk was the best Nolan movie since Memento. A beautiful, stripped down movie that didn't need dialogue to advance the plot.

Certainly a beautiful film from a visual standpoint, and some great moments, just not something I will remember as a great film. I like Nolan, and I think he has some great films, this one just didn't match the hype for me. Aside from cinematography/technical, doubt it will win any awards. I should probably give it a second watch, but have a lot of buds who felt similar.

I disagree. I think it will be in the conversation for best picture. What other options are there this year?

I can't imagine the academy giving Get Out that award.

Lady Bird was a great movie, but was it best picture worthy? I don't think so.

I haven't seen The Killing of the Sacred Deer or The Florida Project but have heard both were underwhelming. Both also have RT scores in the 70s which is usually a decent indicator.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was really good but it had some really strange tonal clashes that I found jarring. It also loses its message halfway through. Fun ride but no Best Picture IMO.

I also haven't had a chance to see The Shape of Water yet. Heard it's really good but that's another one that is nothing like what the Academy is typically looking for.

Blade Runner 2049 probably deserves the award but that seems like a long shot.

Phantom Thread might be the biggest competition and we basically know nothing about it yet. PTA and Daniel Day Lewis might just be enough.

Watched Rough Night and Baby Driver.

Rough Night was a typical low budget poorly written comedy. Something of a cross between Weekend at Bernies and The Hangover. It had a few funny spots but overall, save it for when there is nothing else to watch.

Baby Driver was decent. I wasn't overwhelmed, but it's worth watching IMO. John Hamm is great.

For me it was terrible. Time line back and forth, Didn't seem to be any transition between time lines, Action scenes were shit. I'll give it a D+.

I really liked Dunkirk but I can see why some people don't. You have to know what you're getting into. It's not a typical war movie like Saving Private Ryan where they focus as much or more on the characters as they do what's going on around them.

Dunkirk is not a character piece. It's strictly about the Battle/Evacuation of Dunkirk. If you're looking for a guy you can latch on to and cheer for and have an invested connection with, you're not really gonna find it. There is no main character. The main character is the Battle of Dunkirk and the evacuation of the beach. If that sounds appealing then you'll probably like it. If you really need a character to latch on to and deeply care about then it's probably not for you.

You have good guys, bad guys, and you know the objective for each. And it's intense from beginning to end. That's the movie. Like I said...I really liked it but it's very understandable to see why some don't care for it.

Since late last week, I saw Office Christmas Party, Why Him?, and Keeping Up with the Joneses. All three of them are kind of in the same type of comedy. All three I went into with low expectations as I heard nothing good about them from anyone I know. I found myself pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed all three. Not sure if just in the right mood or that I had such a low bar set for them or what. If you are looking for some just turn off your brain stupid humor, I give them a marginal thumb's up.

I would agree. I was really looking forward to another great war movie but that was not the case with this one. Also, I thought the spitfire flying around with no fuel and shooting down another plane then flying halfway down the beach was one of the worst parts of the movie.... It seemed like they tried to make the movie realistic and then pulled that dumb shit at the end...

I knew with Nolan I'd see some non-linear stuff, which normally I like as it provides some type of uh-huh moment or understanding. No uh-huh for me. You're spot on about the lack of character development. Maybe that's the wrong way to put it. Anyway, some great intensity, great visuals, great moments, but overall it just didn't seem to be a great film. If the film's purpose was to educate the viewer how it felt to be there, then OK. But it's not something I'll remember in ten years and say WOW. Like I said, it probably deserves a second watch which I'll give it.

I think it will definitely get a nomination just because it was probably the biggest buz of the year. I don't think it will win however. IMO pretty weak year for movies. I think the noms will be Dunkirk, Call Me By Your Name, The Florida Project, Get Out, Lady Bird, Three Billboards, The Shape of Water, and The Post. Who should win IMO is either Lady Bird, Three Billboards, or The Florida Project. Commercialism/Hollywood may drive Dunkirk or the Post into the top spot, but I doubt it. I could see Nolan getting best director. I think The Post is overrated too, but will probably get a nom due to the "Streep" effect... Whoever gets noms and wins, I'm sure it will be a shit show again with politics taking front stage, and movies taking the back..

I just didn't get that "Wow that was a best picture!" feeling from Lady Bird or 3 Billboards. Both were fun movies and well made but neither gave me that feeling.

Then again what do I know because Whiplash and Manchester by the Sea both had that feeling for me and neither won.

I'm not good at picking them either, from a perspective of what I thought was the best film. I've gotten pretty decent at picking what i believe they see as the best movie lol. If that makes any sense...

Liked it a lot, but didn't wow me. But not a lot of movies do these days.

Hollywood racial overtones is a hot ticket these days....... I liked the movie a lot, but just seemed to be a better remake of Skeleton Key. I'd bet Peele gets at least nominated for Original Screenplay (not so original to me, but I'd bank on him winning) and maybe director.

Logan and Wind River were my 2 personal favorites this year. I'm guessing neither will win a thing come award time but who cares. Those movies were great.

Enjoyed the hell out of both. Logan, probably the most enjoyable movie of the year for me. Was not what I expected going into it.
