I see someone members.
Saw La La Land last night. Absolutely amazing. If it doesn't win Best Picture I will be shocked.

It was amazing. I meant to say that on this thread earlier but if anyone likes old Hollywood musicals I would say La La Land is an absolute must see in theatres. Gosling and Stone both did great work, and that directing....
I am not sure how to describe why it is so great but I guess I would say it somehow makes you feel like you are in both a modern movie and 1940's musical at the same time.

I'm going to watch it simply because so many people are advocating for it. But nothing about this description makes me want to see it. ha.
For me it was seriously the direction. I knew I was probably going to love the movie as soon as Stone walked into her apartment and went to her room the first time. The way that short moment is shot is so interesting and different that I was immediately like "oh holy cow this is going to be great." Then it just kept getting better.
Will likely buy on bluray when it comes out. I never do that.
It is one of the most unique films I have ever seen from a direction/cinematography standpoint. But it draws on the past in a way that creates nostalgia rather than cheapening the movie.
Yeah the direction was off the charts. And the way the music helps tell the story rather than just be there for entertainment value is another thing I loved.
Saw Silence and Live By Night last weekend.
Silence...good to very good. Powerful movie. Can't complain about much at all.
Live By Night...not very good. Had high expectations for this one and was very disappointed. Its not terrible but not at all what I was expecting. Very poorly paced. Loved Affleck's last two movies he directed...especially The Town, so I was bummed with this one.
Next one up is Split.
Silence was a great. The wife hated it and fell asleep multiple times lol. The cinematography was the best of Scorsese's career. I really can't wait for The Devil in the White City.
Live By Night was average i'd say. I agree with you about the pacing. I thought that it was too obviously based on a book. It felt like three different stories that were placed one after another, each without a satisfying ending just so they could all be wrapped up and interconnected in the last 20 minutes. It also has that RoTK thing where it ends 3 or 4 different times.
Saw Patriots Day. Solid film. Wahlberg had a few really strong scenes, almost made you forget you're watching Marky Mark. There was some really egregious shaky cam in the beginning, to the point where I was getting nauseated, and that's never happened to me in a movie before. Luckily it settled down somewhat after the bomb went off. Melissa Benoist the chick that plays Supergirl is the older terrorist's love interest in this. She plays the role perfectly and really really makes you hate her. In the end I hated her more than both of the terrorist brothers.
Moana was solid. Your standard Disney animated film, they rarely disappoint. Juan Manuel Miranda deserves all the hype he gets. He apparently is working on a new animated film with Disney. Having a film surrounding his music instead of being tacked on the end is going to be a smash hit. One of the songs he wrote for Moana is called "Shiny" it's a tribute to David Bowie. Man that song was stuck in my head for a week after we saw it.
Office Christmas Party. Meh pick it up at the Redbox if you're out of stuff to watch. It has a few laughs, but they really wasted a lot of potential. Plus the ending is just mind numbingly stupid even for a comedy.
Hacksaw Ridge was great. Another example of how good Andrew Garfield is. Mel Gibson might be a piece of shit, but the dude knows how to direct action. Vince Vaughn was also a standout. Love seeing him get serious roles like this and True Detective. He's a good actor.
Arrival is awesome. Great to see a sci fi movie that is actually based on science and not just a CGI mess. Amy Adams is great as usual. Good fresh concept executed well. Denis Villeneuve might be my favorite director in the business right now. Arrival, Sicario, and Prisoners were all phenomenal, Blade Runner 2049 is going to be AMAZING! There has also been some talk about him being interested in doing an adaptation of Dune. Fingers crossed!
Passengers is exactly what you expect. Chris Pratt is a superstar. He's alone in the beginning of the movie for a while Castaway style. I found myself wishing the entire movie was just about that. Though Jennifer Lawrence does have a one piece swimsuit that's worth the price of admission.
Why Him was fun. Nothing groundbreaking or really even memorable, but it had some laughs. Ron Swanson's wife Tammy (that bitch!) plays the mom in this. She really killed that role, she played off Bryan Cranston's character well.
Manchester by the Sea was amazing. Highly recommend everyone see that film. The screenplay is brilliant and subtle. The acting is perfect across the board. Casey Affleck deserves to win best actor. This should win best picture too but i'm sure La La Land will win because of it's "uniqueness" just like The Artist a few years ago, now no one could name the 2011 best picture if you gave them a million dollars. Same thing will happen here. Plus Hollywood loves any movies that are self masturbatory about the industry. Anyways Manchester is incredible. This is the first movie since probably Whiplash that has stuck with me this long after seeing it.
Hacksaw Ridge was probably my favorite move of 2016. Good assessment on Live By Night and Silence as well. Of the others you listed, I saw Moana, Arrival, and Manchester By The Sea. All were very good. I was surprised when I saw Manchester because it seemed like most people in the theater I was at were upset multiple times throughout the movie and were kind of upset when it ended. Don't know what they were watching but it couldn't have been the same one I was. And when I say upset I mean upset as in they didn't like it and were sort of mocking the movie.
I also saw Fences recently and was kind of disappointed with that one as well. Very good acting by Denzel and Viola (and everyone else too really) but I was bored throughout the whole movie. Basically just Denzel's character telling stories the whole movie. 99% of the run time takes place in Denzel's house or backyard. Not my cup of tea but I could see some people liking it because the film-making was good in my uneducated opinion.
Any M Night fans, go see Split. One of his best films.

Lady in the Water... such a better film than it's given credit for...
