Anyone hearing anything about this?

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Whoa. RT @<a href="https://twitter.com/bostonglobe">bostonglobe</a>: BREAKING NEWS: 3 people taken into custody in New Bedford as part of Boston Marathon terror bombing investigation.</p>— Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) <a href="https://twitter.com/BillSimmons/status/325407472036745219">April 20, 2013</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

lies! they're loners!

In case anyone still cares, these three were not arrested or detained. Considering that the two bombers grew up in Massachusetts it's not beyond the realm of possibility that they did know people in New Bev and maybe had been in contact with them, but that there was nothing nefarious about that contact.

So ironic that it was after they called off the lockdown that they quickly find him. Dudes and their boats . . .

How long until the media starts floating the narrative that he is the victim?

If only America was more accepting, etc. If only we didn't invade Iraq/Afghanistan and didn't support Israel.

glad its over...love the bravery of the cops and all responders...New respect for Bostonians!

I'll be honest, I'm just not a fan of making a live take the priority here AT ALL. I'm glad it worked out, and I hope people get something of value for all the risk involved with taking him alive. Is the info you hope to get worth the risk? Yes, it all worked out...but imagine another explosion goes off, AFTER he sat up to survey the situation...is it worth it then to take him alive? Sometimes the import of "why", or "how" doesn't overcome how many people have to ask why...No way I gamble there...lights out kid...we'll piece together what we can from computers and interviews.

Your failure to understand our country is astounding. Nobody is going to say that. There might be an exploration into how these kids went from being pretty typical American kids into murdering monsters. I know I'm interested in knowing how that happened. But nobody is going to feel bad for them or say they are victims.

Pat, again, your wingnut sources betray you. I'd love for you to get tape on all of those guys in that picture saying what they are supposed to have said. I'm sure are at least a couple are based on something, but I'm confident a few are BS. And to the extent that the left did say stupid things, it doesn't make the stupid things that the right said any better. We shouldn't tolerate stupid things from anyone, even the people on our side. I'm not sure if this was in response to my post about the people in New Bedford, but if it was I'd be curious to hear how you think they are related.

Pat,

Major props for the non-stop coverage/updates of this. Thanks for keeping an open-mind, and presenting intel from every possible angle, instead of just one. Kudos to you sir.

And many congratulations to Rupert Murdoch's NY Post for making a high school track runner's life complete hell by accusing him of the crime on their front page. Goes beyond mere speculation when they show a photo of an actual person, no?

That was irresponsible...

Not sure how you fix that...I guess you start with a front page apology.

Is Murdock any more likely to make amends than MSNBC is for their "creative" video editing...NA.

You can't really identify a single media outlet that doesn't wear the moniker of TABLOID at least half the time if TABLOID is judged by the quality of writing AND the conduct of the "Journalism".

Any lawyers on here? I know there are many experts on everything, no names mentioned. How can people take the angle that he wasn't read his rights? This guy and his brother wreaked havoc on Boston for a week, setting off bombs and killing people, really, rights? Please help me understand.

So I miss anything while I was gone?

You know that little thing called the Constitution? With the Bill of Rights? And all those little amendments that follow?

I turned on this news once, and it was like CNN, with this guy going on, who was someone from a past government post, so his agenda or competence were suspect; but he went on and on about how these guys were Jhadists, with the same old mantra. I had to laugh.

About the Miranda Rights: That is one of the main mechanisms that keep a conspiracy of the police from growing. With habeas corpus and a recitation of rights, we are protected from a government doing awful things to citizens. I could go through a list, but a good example is a state executing 25% of its citizens as subversives, with the backing of most of those people and the other 75% at the start.

I understand that with modern terrorism, the thought tends to be glean useful information before Mirandizing a suspect. Maybe someone with training could answer that.

It is 8:08AM and there is snow on the ground here in the Toledo area; it is going to be cold all day. Can't imagine it will be any different in "The Bend." Thursday it was above 80! I have to get the sloppy joes on for the game. Loving my choice right now to watch this year on the sports network!

Rights are rights. If you think about it, the rights that afford you protections after you're arrested are given to people who have done bad things by design. The whole idea behind "rights" is that they are things everyone* is entitled to, even if they've just done something wrong.

Now, in this case, I'm not sure who is complaining that this kid hasn't been read his rights, but they don't know what they are talking about. There is a fairly well established concept called the national security exception that permits law enforcement to question a suspect on matters of national security without reading the suspect his or her Miranda rights. The exception would certainly apply in this case to allow for questioning to determine who this kid worked with, if anyone, and whether there are undetonated explosives anywhere, etc. Eventually this kid should be read his rights like everyone else, but that he hasn't been yet is not a legit concern.

*rights come in two flavors - human rights which apply to everyone, and constitutional rights which are afforded to American citizens. In this case the distinction is meaningless because the suspect is an American citizen.
