Yes, it is being reported that he agreed to the counter offer then took a counter-counter offer from TA&M.

Again, i don't think we should bash Elko because we just don't yet know all the whys in his decision. I think we should rally around the program, coaches, and team if they in fact did all they could and should.

We can all debate who the next coordinator should be or why Elko left until the cows come home. The next hire needs to run the same scheme, that is imperative in my opinion. The players currently on the roster obviously thrive in it, have a year of experience, deserve the consistency and the recently signed and current 2018 class are being evaluated for that scheme. If BK hires someone that isn’t going to run it, it’s a bad hire.

We can't pussyfoot in the middle anymore. We've either got to go all in on the CFB funding arms race, or opt out of it and try to convince like-minded schools to come with us. They opted out clearly and it pisses me off. Notre Dame's admin isn't taking any high road here. We have the God Damn money. Hell, what's the revenue every two years with the football program 2nd behind Texas? .It's going to look like another 30 year drought of Natty's and not many major bowl wins. As far as I'm aware that's all basically true. People saying "don't blame Swarbrick"... bottom line is if he wrote a big reciprocal buyout into the first contract we're probably not having this discussion. A three year deal for over a million dollars a year where we were locked in but he wasn't is just absurd. Second, when A&M made the first pass after Jimbo was hired and he "verbally agreed" to a raise how do you not have him sign that immediately with a big buyout attached? Bottom line is that there are two problems here:
1. ND couldn't or wouldn't get into a top-of-market setting bidding war. Say what you want about the logic on that... there are pros and cons... LSU who has negative money right now was willing to do that for "their guy."
2. ND found themselves in this position despite "competitive" pay because of badly written contracts that didn't protect ND enough. It's really hard to get details on this stuff but when Elko was originally signed to a "3 year guaranteed deal" for significantly north of a million per year I assumed it was ironclad both ways... I guess not? And once it became obvious that people were coming after Elko, the time to lock him in to that raise was right then... you make him sign in the line and you make sure any team that tries to poach him has to pay you handsomely. Lots of miscues.

Also, this is really shitty of Elko regardless of which way you slice it and a lot of people that bought into his "honesty" are rightfully ticked. Yes, it's a business... but there's a right way and a wrong way to do things. He lied to a lot of people.

Agree 100% with you on there is a right and wrong way to make decisions like this. Fans can and should absolutely be mad about how they he went about this. He basically used Nd for his own personal gain. He probably knew from the beginning he wasn’t staying but used his leverage to get paid.

On the contract miscues, hasn’t ND learned how to structure a contract after being hosed in them for what the last 20 years. Do they use boiler plate legal zoom docs? Wasn’t swarbrick a lawyer in his previous life? What did he specialize in? Better not have been contract law.

USA Today Sports Images LAS VEGAS -- Nevada head coach Brian Polian hired new defensive coordinator Scott Boone during the Mountain West Conference media days in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Scott Boone replaces Scottie Hazelton, who joined the Jacksonville Jaguars staff in the off-season. Boone previously served as the defensive coordinator at William & Mary.

Polian said, “I like Scott. He’s more East Coast. I like those East Coast guys. He’s pretty blunt, he’s loud and holds the players accountable. He’s been a good fit. I loved Scottie Hazelton. I know we weren’t as productive as we hoped to be, but Scottie is a really good coach. That is evident by the fact that he’s in the National Football League, now.

Of interest to ND fans, Hazelton is credited with recruiting Ty Isaac to USC.

LOL, I was just checking in to suggest this exact same thing. Now if ND had good alternatives perhaps this is still a bad decision. But in the absence of a good alternative perhaps ND benefited from having Elko for only one year vs not at all?

Terrible idea. We are just now getting the guys perfect for a 4-3/4-2-5 system after getting his 3-4 guys out. It is not the time to switch back. It would set the program back tremendously.

I'd be fine if ND went and got someone who has been getting results for many years, and broke the bank.

Sucks he left...will never know all the reasons I guess, but I'm not butt hurt about ND choosing to not pay him like he has been delivering top 20 defenses for 10 years. From a place that has seen Broyles awardees and nominees fall flat on their ass...healthy skepticism is reasonable.
