But 2 safeties starting an entire year, and not 1 play? Even if you're bad you have to get lucky at least once.

Didn't Max Redfield have like 2 passes defended in his entire career here? Don't remember him making any plays either. That's why I always liked Farley, guy would actually make plays.

No actually I don't. I recall him being considered a nice pickup but never a top of the board must get. He was a 247 composite 3 star, #491 player in country. Hardly a must get safety.

It's mind blowing how Nick Coleman and Jalen Elliot will have played an entire year without making a single play.

All while tackling poorly and being bad in coverage, mind you.

Coleman has actually played well this year.

I think Stanford will play right into what our Defense and Elko do well. Miami was a disaster because of TO's, our D played well against Navy, and Wake's quick passing game is so much different than anything we'll see out of Stanford. Like the matchup, I guess we'll see.

Tbh I'm not relieved.

ND should not ever lose a coordinator to a lesser program....A&M is a "never was."

Not a worry in the world...would not make a lateral move.

Head coaching job or bust.

Rumors are just another example of a delusional fan base.

You mean like Holtz losing Alvarez to Wisconsin. Barry spent 8 years in HS coaching. Then onto Iowa for 7 before moving to ND as LB. After a year at ND he became DC and ND won a NC going 12-0 and was 3rd in the nation in points allowed. In '89 ND was 12-1 and allowed the 9th fewest points in the nation.

He was then hired by Wisconsin and in 3 years turned a dormant program that hadn't had a winning season in 5 years around.

Unfortunately ND didn't lose several coordinators on both sides of the ball that they should have over the past 20+ seasons.

Barry Alvarez got a head coaching job. That is much much much different than taking a coordinator gig.

Bingo. I thnk he just wanted an excuse to “educate” you on the history of Barry Alvarez b/c nobody remembers that he was the DC at ND when they won the NC.

Do Elko and Kelly have the same agent? The comments about financials doesn't exactly read as a positive.

Glad he's staying, hopefully for a while. Though I really didn't like the way BK spoke of the pay for D coordinators in the article there. Should have been a little more diplomatic.

I've said before he wouldn't be leaving after one year.

The reasons he would leave after one year would be one of three:

1. He wasn't a fit here. No rumors about him and BK not getting along, so cross that off.
2. A HC position at an upper level P5 school. Cross that off.
3. A DC position that paid some ridiculous and I mean ridiculous amount of money. Cross that off.

If the D continues to improve, start worrying after the 18 season.

I agree with everything above, but the only reason I could see him staying past the 2018 season (provided BK is still here) is if he's holding out for a Tennessee-level job. Kirby Smart, Jeremy Pruitt, Lincoln Riley, Justin Wilcox, and Derek Mason all have recently landed solid P5 jobs as a DC. I can see Elko holding out for job like these guys did. Maybe a tepid market for established coaches pushes a school to hire an established DC like Elko?

I believe most here would agree knowing that IF Elko came in and turned the ND "D" around (which he has thus far) that he would have plenty of HC opportunities after 3 yrs. (at most). Other than Kelly leaving and Elko getting a shot as his replacement, I don't think that we'll have Elko past year 3 of being at ND.

I think Kelly announced this so any D player looking to go to the draft might think another year under Elko and look how much better than can improve. Like Tillery he could be a first round pick next year. Coney can jump upthere with a monster year which he should have. I think ND needs to pony up though and start paying our coordinators and assistants a lot more. Not sure how much Elko is making but I'd pay the guy 3-4 million

lol the highest paid DC (aranda at LSU) makes 1.8. 3-4 mil would be a little over market value dude

You'd pay the guy more than double what the highest paid DC makes? Interesting. Where are you getting this money?
