Seems like if Kelly didn’t bolt MFMF woulda been elsewhere next season. Was a top choice for Duke’s head coaching job and was gonna be offered/was offered the DC job at OSU.

https://footballscoop.com/news/notre...llege-football

Probably but not necessarily . Turned down more $ from LSU last season. Turned down more $ in between 2019 and 2020 seasons to stay at Cincinnati as DC instead of Michigan State DC.

Marcus Freeman seems calculating in his decisions and there is more than just $ involved. Was there some private hush hush wink wink coach in waiting deal at ND? Seems unlikely but who knows. Do you go to OSU if you think Ryan Day is going to coach the Bears? Do you go to Duke which is not a good football job historically?

Marcus Freeman fell for ND in his short time here but he certainly would not have stayed forever as DC but he seemed to look at things more from a strategic football career standpoint than a $ standpoint. He seemed somewhat patient in his move.

It’s a premium article but you can get the idea just from this. Keep in mind this is an OFFENSIVE recruit.

Freeman bringing a little bit of OSU with him. I saw some green shamrocks on the practice helmets from yesterdays highlights. As long as they stay on the practice helmets an off the game day helmets I’m fine with it.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that has been a thing for practice helmets in the past. Maybe even the last couple of years. I feel like I have seen them before.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they've been around for a few years with practice helmets.

For those of you who wished Kelly would have hit the DC area more, we have good news. MF[SUP]2[/SUP] is recruiting the area today. Per Loy he's visiting Nyckoles Harbor at Archbishop Carroll in DC, Jason Moore at DeMatha and Dylan Gooden.at Good Counsel. He thinks an offer or two may go out. Washington will be accompanying him.

Now that the staff (fingers crossed) is complete, how are we grading Freeman's first coaching staff?

-Al Washington is likely a better recruiter than Elston which should offset anyway that Elston may be better at developing talent
-RB coach was going to be tough to upgrade from Lance Taylor, but he managed to do it with Deland McCollough
-Chansi Stuckey is a little more of an unknown I guess given his whole body of work, but I think that also has potential to be his best hire
-Harry Heistand is going to have the offensive line absolute mauling some scrubs this fall. Chris Watt joining him makes this even better.
-I don't know much about Brian Mason yet, but it sounds like he's highly thought of.
-While Al Golden hasn't been a coordinator in college for almost 20 years, I think this is the perfect hire in bringing in a veteran with actual HC experience. I think Golden will work out much better than Heacock would have.
-Don't love the Gerad Parker hire, but I don't think it's necessarily bad either. High floor given the talent at the position.

I think I give it an A-, and the A- is really only because of the continuity that was implied with hiring Freeman. He pretty much nailed every hire with the McCollough and Heistand hires being A+s in my book.

RB's - McCollough - A+
TE's - Parker - C
WR's - Stuckey - C+
OL - Heistand - A++
DL - Washington - B
DC - Golden - B
ST - Mason - A+

I'll consider that a B+ overall, which is great for a first-time HC.

I'm meh on Parker, since it seemed like a strange hire that was made quickly, and we got teased with some big names that were interested. That influences my grade, even if those guys were unrealistic or not great options for other reasons.

I'm cautiously optimistic on Stuckey. I would have gone with a flat 'C,' but he's got recruiting experience in Texas.

The great news is that the two guys viewed as head-scratchers/toss-ups are guys that can easily prove their worth, and Golden could turn into an A+ hire if he rediscovers some recruiting connections in the South. Parker just has to keep the TE room stocked, and Stuckey has to elevate recruiting from where Alexander had it... both of which are reasonable benchmarks to attain if Freeman has gambled correctly.

I forgot about Washington... I'd go with a B that could go either way. Ohio State's LB's were a big question mark, but he balances that with recruiting chops.

He coached DL at Cincy for a year, so as long as his recruiting overcomes any developmental falloff from losing Elston, we're good.

Which assistant positions were not an upgrade? I think TE is probably a downgrade because of the McNulty-Rees relationship. The rest though look pretty damn good. Elston and Washington may be a push but we'll see. Washington won't need to have Elston's coaching chops when it's all high 4 stars and 5 stars on the field...

I must be higher on the Parker hire than most. He seems like he was a rising star in the coaching ranks but flamed out a bit with his first OC gig. I think he was pretty highly thought of prior to that job title and has been noted as a big energy guy.

I definitely get that he wasn't on the list of dream names for everyone, but I don't think Golden was either but as you learn more about what they have done recently, you like the hire more.

I agree with you, but I think personally I would be more welcoming to Parker if I wasn't so bummed that McNulty left. I think if McNulty wasn't retained or left with Kelly, no one blinks twice at the Parker hire.

I don't have a problem with it but I think short term it might hurt Rees a bit. He seems to have relied on McNulty's experience a ton. Parker may very well be more knowledgeable/innovative than McNulty. But who knows how readily Rees is going to rely on him in light of those weird stories about him being pissed Parker was hired.

On the Ohio State linebackers. Just remember Mike Elston coached LBs for the worst rush D in Notre Dame history. Sometimes when the DC is bad everyone looks bad.

I'll render an opinion on the others after I see some results. I don't know why, but the Golden hire reminds me of Heistand's hire the first time. Like HH, I think Golden will exceed expectations.
